Blah, no memory card slot? :(

    • +3

Card Reader: Type: Micro SD; Spec: SDXC

    • I take that back. Ordered one!

  • Looks like a good deal.

Does anyone have something like this and have put a microSD card in? How well does that work?

Has anyone put Linux on one of these? How does that perform?

    • +4

I'm using one right now and I've had it for 4 months and Its awesome and more powerful than you would think. The micro sd expansion slot is great. I have a 64gb sandisk ultra micro sd in mine and have installed Steam games and Itunes to the Micro Sd
It doesn't get hot when running and I get well over 10 hours battery life on it. I have photoshop installed running perfectly.
I changed to one after selling my 2013 and then 2014 Macbook Airs both got hot all the time playing simple games.
I can play Microsoft Flight Simulator X,Gta Vice City,Gta San Andreas,Scorched 3D,Machinarium,Monkey Island SE fine on it.
Just look on youtube for "X205ta Gaming" and you can see it running Skyrim,Fallout, League of Legends and Minecraft.
You can have 10 to 12 search windows open in internet explorer or firefox and it runs
      fine.
Its also so light at 980gms.
I highly recommend it its so easy to throw in your backpack and travel with too.
Mine is running Windows 8.1 which it came with. The ones one sale now have Windows 10
I have read that Linux is very hard to install on these though to be able to get all drivers to work.

      • Is yours a white one? I am a bit worry the white turn dark very quickly.

Look very similar to the Lenovo 100S.

        • Yes its white and I don't think it will turn dark at all. Mine is fine.

      • Thanks for your very useful answers.

How big is the Win 10 install?

        • +1

Just over 12gb. You have between 19 and 20 Gb free. But remember you can add space by using a micro sd card and have the option of using a slim fit Usb for extra storage as well.

        • @ONSALE:

Just got it today the build in storage is not enough to patch Windows 10 and asked me to plug in external device.

      • How is it for 720p and 1080p video?

Netflix and (legally acquired) downloaded TV Shows?

        • +2

Its maximum resolution is HD 720p. Watching Movies and Tv is excellent.

  • How is this one compare with Lenovo 100s?

  • +1

Maybe turn it into a Chromebook?

    http://www.neverware.com/landingpage#pricingcomparison

No idea if it would run it— you could be a guinea-pig, but have a system image of your original before you do so.

    • +1

I'm going to give it a go, just bought one.

    • Why would you want to turn it into a Chromebook? When Chromebooks have less features?
      http://www.techbout.com/disadvantages-of-chromebooks-69/
That's like buying a car and taking the wheels off and expecting it to drive.

      • No, it's like buying a car, stripping out the parts to make it more lightweight so that it moves faster while using less fuel. Sure it no longer has air conditioning or a CD player, but it accelerates faster.

        • No, it's like buying a car, stripping out the parts to make it more lightweight so that it moves faster while using less fuel

And then negating the whole thing by installing an operating system that is as slow as a wet week and so resource hungry that it brings the device to it's knees.

        • With a Chromebook you can't play many offline games. Can't use offline Photo Software except Chromes built in one. Can't install Itunes. Can't use Microssoft Word. Can't connect to a printer except through the cloud the list goes on.
Needing an internet connection for almost everything is not advantageous especially if suddenly you have a bad internet connection.

        • @ONSALE:

Well, different strokes for different folks. Even though Chrome Os has strict limitations it does have it's advantages. Scotty uses one and he's a web developer.

your definition of a 'productive and useful' machine is one that runs Windows applications, runs Office 365 and can connect to a printer. For somebody else it might be different, they might just need it to write code using a text editor, or SSH into a local machine to do stuff remotely.

at the end of the day if the operating system does what you want it to do and you can be productive with the software that's provided, you can't really say that Chrome OS is good for nothing but browsing the web.

        • +1

@scrimshawIt appears you are misquoting me, I did not say Chrome OS was good for nothing but browsing the web. I said "Needing an internet connection for almost everything is not advantageous" Which is true for most things you do need Chrome to be connected to the web.

  • Max RAM? Is storage soldered on or replaceable/upgradeable type?

Linux or ChromeOS might perform better on this level of hardware, but installing it is not easy, and not fully working.
32-bit UEFI with 64-bit CPU, missing drivers, … Just get a Chromebook.

    Windows 10 will cope with 2GB + 32GB.

    • to the thin-skin - I was addressing questions re linux above. Not telling Windows users to get a chromebook.

Holy Moley These are great devices, paid $288 last month and was happy, this is almost worth it just for the free office 365 extension.

As well as the 64gb Micro Sd I have installed. I also have a 64gb Sandisk Ultra Fit Usb always in one of the USB Ports Giving me around 140gb Total Storage after Windows Installation.
I purchased for $28 at MSY

  • Thinking of buying for parents to do Skype .. Can anyone confirm Howz the screen quality and webcam as it says vga which looks ordinary

    • VGA very low resolution.

    • +1

And screen is glossy (horrid for laptops) and low resolution in the vertical (768 pixels).

      • I have had no problems with the screen. I read that it was glossy when I purchased it but I have to say I don't notice any reflections at all. However I haven't used it outside.

        • +1

I found that glossy looks better if you are not outdoor.

My ASUS T100 screen looks better than my normal HP laptop.

        • Lucky I bought this one instead of Lenovo 100s, the glossy screen is so much clear than matte screen. I found that unless the matte screen with high end model otherwise glossy screen is better on low end machine.

Just like using my smart phone all smart phone are glossy screen.

    • Screen Quality is great for the size and price 16:9 HD screen with 1366x768 pixels.
Webcam is Vga But you can always buy an external one.

  • Couldn't resist finally bought one myself, anybody use C&C? My local store said in stock but the pick up time on 17Mar, how come?

  • Anyone got a good deal on SDXC's atm? I need one that's about 128GB.

  • 35 sold in 24 hours …
