I signed up for this last month for the balance transfer, but realised after I had received the card that I didn't read the terms and conditions properly.

"Excludes Card Members who have held any Card issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 60 day period."
As I have another American Express card, I was not eligible for the balance transfer offer.

  • Does anyone know if I can transfer whatever I have on my credit limit or I can only transfer whatever I am currently owning the bank (e.g. credit already spent)?

    • +1

You can transfer any amount you want. say you have $5000 debt on one card and you get a new card and say you want to transfer a $7K debt, it'll put your other card in +$2000 territory. It's really just one bank essentially 'bpaying' the other bank.

Then you can ring the bank and ask them to move that to your savings account without incurring a once off cash advance fee (or just take the fee if you cbf). Because it's your money. Your mileage may vary however as the practice can be construed as credit card kiting.

    • Generally what ever you what. Your only limitation on this card is you can transfer a maximum of 70% of the limit you are approved for.

      For example
Maximum credit limit approved by AEX = $10k
Amount owing on 3rd party card = $2k

Maximum transfer ability $7k despite your credit card only being $2k still.

  • Does any one know if I can balance transfer from one Amex card to this one to avail this offer?

EDIT: not available, need to be a new American Express card member to get balance transfer offer.

Can anyone recommend a visa/MC no annual fee (forever), Qantas frequent flyer credit card? I had an Amex from work which was a pain because it was not accepted by a lot of small retailers I shopped at.

    • +2

I'd recommend a Woolworths Visa. You'll get 30,000 points first year for a reduced fee of $99. Each year call up to cancel, citing the $139 fee, and they're a good chance to waive it.

      • no bonus points at the mo

      • Thanks! Will have a look..

      • Thanks. $99 fee is a bit steep, any others? No bonus points on signup is ok for me.

        • Not really, the cheapest all around the $90 mark for Visa and MC earning QFF.

As I said, better to pay the first year's fee and get the points, knowing you should get it for free thereafter.

  • Can you BT personal loans?

    • I would pay it into a credit card so you would have positive balance, withdraw it and then pay it into your personal loans.

      • So if you have positive balance in CC and you then withdraw the money, bank wouldn't charge the Cash Advance Fee ?

        • +1

most bank will still charge a fee, as it is the type of transaction not the balance of the account that triggers it.

        • Ring the bank and they can sort it out for free.

    • usually yes

    • Listed as expired 3 months ago.

      • Yes I know but what is the difference betwwen that and this post? Any new? Just the same information

  • I love the phone screen insurance. Clumsy with phone, clumsy with cash, reel em in.

  • only new card;
even existing card holder of different type excluded

    • In theory. In practice, they don't seem to enforce these rules.

      • Are you sure?
Should I call them and ask?

        • They're not likely to tell you they won't enforce the rules, much less give you a guarantee for it.

Better off to just apply for it. If they don't call you to say you're ineligible, you should be fine. Even if you don't get it, it's only $50 you lose, as the card's free.

  • How strict are they with checking your income?

    • you have to have a personal gross (pre-tax) annual income of $40,000 or more

To actually answer your question, not very.

  • So id be getting this card purely for the 0% bt and no bt fee function but i already have the amex platinum card issued direct by amex. Would i still be able to apply for this card and transfer a balance from my anz black card? Or would i be inelligible due to being an amex card holder already?

If so, would it still be worth the chance of trying? Or is there better alternatives available? Dont want to pay an annual fee or a bt fee which is why this 1 looked good.

  • I noticed the following "After selecting submit….we may offer you the opportunity to apply for a balance transfer"

Has anyone applied for this and not been offered the balance transfer?

I only want this card for the bt, I don't want to apply and then end up with a card I don't need.

    • Pulled the trigger, it offered me the bt (only one though) Just gotta wait and see now.

  • Can anyone give me a quick bit of advice on this deal Vs the Coles Mastercard? my understanding is the Coles MC is the best on the market at the moment, it offer's insurance for 2 years on items you purchase on price and accidents/theft. There is also a startup fee of only $69 and they have no conversion fee for overseas currencies, is there anything I'm missing on why you would go for this card instead?

All I can think of is that the rewards points are better on AMEX? but for me the other perks of the Coles MC are more suited to my needs?

    • If you do not have one or more AMEX cards, you miss all the deals for AMEX.A true Ozbargainer should only have a no annual fee Coles MasterCard.

      • That's what they say. I've had four Amex cards in the past year…cancelled one in April, applied for three cards since: got the hefty bonuses on each of them.

  • +1 got this card a few weeks ago.

Im not even working got a $2000 one. Just stating my previous employer.

    Lucky maybe?

    Amex stupid? *tick

On another note. Good customer service, no issue/bullshit card.

Just wonder what does this mean, if, for example I transfer $10,000 as BT, would I be charged $100 straight away or it would be $10,100 as total when open an account?

  • How hard is the application process. I just started on the new job and I am moving house too. will it matter? please let me know. should I wait ?

    • Easy application process from my experience. Very quick to turnaround and send the card.

One word of warning to all customers of this card - I used it a little bit (i.e. Purchased on top of my BT balance) but then paid it off asap and ok got charged a tiny bit of interest - but since then I've been getting charged interest on my Balance Transfer amount and it took a couple of phone calls to get it all sorted out and (hopefully) switched off now..

Goes without saying here on OzB but keep an eye on your statements and interest items.

      Enjoy!

  • I applied this card and I got message saying we will process your application in 5-10 business days. I though all credit card providers have 60 second turnaround on approval or rejection. Did anyone got asked for documentation etc?

    • From memory, I think this was the same for my application as well. This was a while back now.
