OKay, this deal is not going to appeal to a lot of people but figured it was definitely worth sharing.

The Leap Motion controller has had a bit of a chequered history. It's a device that is designed to capture your hands in a 3D space, effectively becoming a 3D mouse. However, it was a gimmick, rarely worked and was useful for maybe 10 minutes before stuffing it back in the box, never to be used again. That was until a few days ago, when Leap Motion has released version 3 of its drivers, called Orion, which now apparently works as designed.

Now, what makes it the most interesting for me in particular is that it's looking like the hand/finger tracking is going to be useful in a virtual cockpit for VR. The developer for flyinside has released a very basic demo of it in use.

I've found a relatively cheap 'copy' on Aliexpress. Bear in mind that it's not an 'official' leap motion controller in a sense that it has a full leap motion warranty, but the hardware is exactly the same as the official version so will work as intended.

That said, I used the mobile app and mind came to $31.58AUD since it was my first order.

Sorry but counterfeit and other knock-off goods that are intended to deceive the consumer are not allowed as per https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:banned_items

  • It's neither a knock off or counterfeit product. It's just the chinese version.

What makes you say it's not a "genuine" LEAP controller? I mean, every single photo is of a LEAP. The only thing I can think of is that you mean it's not through one the three marketplaces that LEAP says we can buy it in China (Amazon, Taobao/TMall or Newegg).

Some comments on another vendor's LEAP says, "Got my Leap Motion, everything looks fine. It was authenticated by the official software, and worked as expected." I might suggest going with this vendor anyway because they have more sales and higher reviews but the same price.

If it didn't authenticate, you would file an AliExpress dispute because it didn't function as advertised. And those photos are of LEAP controllers. Did you it must be a copy because the price is so low? The standard price is about $100 or so.

Edit: Read the post from OP above, which confirms what I said. It's genuine but may not be from an authorized reseller. Aka grey market.

I don't know why but buying your linked seller from the mobile app is USD 80c cheaper. Better than the cash rewards offer.

So I just bought it for USD $23.17

I paid <$50 for this at the DSE sales a while ago. It's more of a novelty than anything useful.

There are applications that let you use your fingers as gestures. Scrolling is mostly fine, but you sometimes accidentally open programs by moving your finger too close or drag icons across the screen. The included playground app is great. Being able to pick up a flower by its stem with your virtual hands as you pull a pedal off one by one is amazing.

You can even mount the Leap on a VR headset for a lot of games.

Try the new V3/Orion drivers.. It now looks like a useful controller. And yes, I plan to use it on my Oculus Rift.

I play Hearthstone with this occasionally, it's a good way to keep your mouse clean while eating :D

    • also.. that hotdog mustard dripping on your fingers no longer smears across your touch screen.

  • could this be useful as a mouse replacement for a HTPC that has my TV as a monitor … im really struggling with the touchpad mouse on an HTPC Keyboard

  • Update: Just got an email to state that mine has shipped.

"I used the mobile app and mind came to $31.58AUD since it was my first order." How do you do that? I downloaded the mobile app, registered a new user (with Google Account), placed order, and I'm at the credit card number page but still no discount.

  • Arrived today, have received at work place I've read reddit comments that reaffirm that they are genuine as they are by leap motion staff themselves, the first link/comment chain is probably the most interesting as he's an engineer. There's no real clear answer though as to how they arrive by their inventory (1st person assumes inventory risk hence they sell to resellers):
