  • Anybody know what the battery life on this device is like?

    • Not sure but the previous Hi8 was around the 4.5 hours mark with 40% brightness.

Remember this tablet has new SOC so might see improvement there but the battery capacity is still 4000mAh

  • Anyone know if these type of devices can run Full Office Apps? What about full applications like Photoshop?

    • +1

I believe you can but not sure of the performance. It runs full Windows 10.

These are not meant to be a complete replacement of your desktop. They can do basic document editing and they are a nifty device but… with the amount of the RAM and CPU, I'd not try to do something resource heavy.

      • Yeps this will be a tablet for simple stuff and for my kid to play around with.

Mainly going to be a browser and media player.

        • +1

Would be fine for that, though for those, I think Android tablets are better (Android apps have better touch friendly apps). Though at this price, can't think of any Android device that's better than this in terms of hardware spec (though I don't look at Chinese Android tablets, so there is that).

Also, I was replying to hippo2s with my previous comment, must've pressed wrong button.

        • +1

@Oversimplified: There are Windows 10 "modern" apps for Office which are fully touch compatible, and run on lower powered devices. You could also download the Photoshop Express app. I probably wouldn't try running the full versions of Office or Photoshop though.

        • @registradus: These probably would handle Office alright (My brother used to have a baytrail tablet and they ran fine, if my memory is serving me correctly). Photoshop would probably be pushing it way too far.

Not too sure about the modern app version of Office since I've never needed to use modern app on my Windows tablet (other than Onenote, which I've given up on using for few reasons). If they are similar to the ones on Android however, they still work better with mouse and a keyboard (i.e. cursor movement with touch is finnicky etc).

    • My wife has a Telcast x98 Air II - loves it. Running full Windows 10 and has super fast eMMC 64Gb storage (shared with Android, but enough) - I think I benchmarked the read performance of this at 180Mb/s - about 6 times faster than a spindle drive.

Would recommend you get yourself a keyboard and mouse and OTG cable to connect - we brought the Telcast because of the HDMI so she can run external monitor also.

      • I have a Teclast Air 3G which is essentially the same thing but with a sim card slot and I love it. I find I mostly use Android with it but its good having Windows 10 there as an option if required. For some reason when I try to plug it into another computer with the usb cable it never gets recognised(even after installing the android ADB drivers) so I can't flash a different Android ROM on it but the original ROM is ok once you hide all the chinese apps and install the play store.

Take a look at this page for the Air 3G. Chris has compiled articles, downloads etc for the tablet and will probably be able to help out with getting your PC to recognise it if you ask.

It does not meet the minimum requirement for Photoshop CC when read verbatim (2.0ghz or better, but with older chip architecture listed).

It meets the minimum requirements for lightroom and for office.

Whether the applications will run well or not is a different issue. You can probably use LR and even photoshop, but not for intense (i.e. not too many layers, and don't do full size previews etc) application. If you wanted to make quick changes to a few photos on the fly, it'd probably be OK. I doubt it will handle a full photog workflow.

Granted, the biggest improvement in Cherry trail over bay trail was the GPU, and from what I gather LR does not use the GPU to any extent (as long as it can display something then it is fine) so I am guessing there will be minor improvements in LR performance with cherry trail. In contrast, photoshop does use the GPU so there could be improved performance.

I would be shocked if it didn't handle office applications with no problems.

The older Intel Atom Z3735 series handled Office 2013 fine without any issues. Most of the tablets then came with a year of Office 365 anyway.

        • is there a model with windows, 8 inch, data via simcard and voice calls?

        • @hippo2s: Nothing with data at 8" unfortunately. They're usually all 9.7" +

I gotta say, this is quite a decent setup if you can find a good BT kbd… you got a quasi windows FHD laptop for less $200.

Still waiting for reviews on how these stacks up to the original. Initial whirlpool user reviews seems good though.

I have the Chuwi Hi8 which I bought late last year but hardly used it (specially Windows).
It came with Windows 10 (activated) and Android 4.4.

Android runs smoothly, display is good (although its not glass screen) but battery is below average.
Normal browsing and video streaming is fine, only played games once which was good old fruit ninja and the battery/back cover was very hot after just 10 mins…

Windows seems works OK but I won't be able to provide full feedback as I haven't used it much. But I felt the EMCC drive performed slower on Windows than Android.

In a nutshell - build quality is nice, overall performance is great, battery life is below average, ROM/Storage (being EMCC) speed can be slow specially in Windows.

Edit: Forgot to mention the Camera which is very bad

    • display is good (although its not glass screen)

That's interesting. The Hi8 is supposed to have a glass screen and all of the reviews say that too. Are you sure it's not the CHUWI Vi8?

      • I have the Hi8 and it does feel like plastic screen (not glass)

Then again you are right… techtablets.com confirms its glass screen so I might be wrong

Update: it could be plastic too

Maybe they used it for the first revision? I'd have to ask CHUWI to know for certain.

        • +1

          @Clear:
I purchased a Hi8 (not the pro version)last year and it definitely has a plastic screen. It's a shame they omitted the dual boot.

        • My last-year's model Hi8 has a plastic screen. I think a lot of the reviewers were just sloppy.

        • @nocure:

Though in the screenshots of the Pro, they forgot to remove the switch to Android icon on the taskbar.

Definitely plastic on the Hi8 though, and if it's pressed too hard, the digitizer and display stick together and look like it's water damaged (until it seperates)

        • +1

@nocure: Then they must have changed it in the later revisions. Teclast did something similar with the X98 Air II by quietly replacing the Z3736 SoC with Z3735.

Dual boot was likely removed as Microsoft threatened to stop providing free Windows licenses. Some manufacturers like Cube and Vido have got away with it.

    • Very similar experience for me too, I found Windows a frustrating and found myself using Android all the time which was a much better experience.

Screen is most definitely plastic, I also had the bubble appear in the middle of the screen too, can be temporarily fixed with a suction cap but the bubble returned soon enough. If it was a glass screen I would have kept the tablet as it was the only hindrance on a fantastic Android experience.

  • Does this have a glass or plastic screen?

    • Same question - what kind of screen does it use?

    • Edit: seems like its Glass screen from few online reviews

I'd say the screen is quite nice though

  • Can I plug a Portable USB Hard Drive into it (2'5")
Will the USB Type-C power the hard drive if I find a usb type-c to USB 3.0 adapter?

  • Just be careful of these tablests hey use KMS keys to activate Windows. If the server is turned off or not available your OS won't activate, reason I returned my hi8 to another vendor. It's not really how KMS should be used, not even sure its legal.

    • +1

lol KMS, its supposed to be used in enterprise, not for consumer and certainly not this way.

Be aware that China is currently on holidays till the 13th of Feb so any order won't be entered/shipped until after the Chinese New Years.. This includes all shipping companies..

  • There should be a warning on this that the Chuwi Hi8 Pro may not be available for shipping for a while. I had ordered one on about the 20th of November last year from Gearbest - even after 2 months, it still hadn't shipped so I ended up filing a PayPal dispute - checking other sellers, some of them are indicating that there have been delays due to problems with the screen - some are suggesting that it will be available by the end of February but I wouldn't count on it considering how many delays there have already been.

I've ended up ordering a Chuwi Hi10 from Banggood - quite similar, but with a bigger (10 inch) screen, 2x full USB ports (1 of them being USB3) plus a micro USB port, double the RAM (4GB) and Flash (64GB) - price is quite a bit higher though, but at least it has shipped and is on it's way to me!

    • Purchasing from a site that is banned for shipping delays is your first problem. This product was on presale until last week and those issues have been resolved as it's now in stock.

I am curious how the Chuwi Hi10 will go. I've been looking for a 10" tablet.

      • I did pay extra for faster shipping with tracking, so I thought that I was fairly safe.

Not really their fault for not being able to ship it if the supplier wasn't able to provide stock, but it would have been good if they had kept me informed…

      • Yeah really depends on the product stocks at the supplier, but the difference is Gearbest will just let it ride rather than keep you informed.

Banggood seem to be really good in that regard, one of my recent orders they contacted me to say it would be delayed ( new ETA was only a week away though) and I could get a refund or wait. Wasn't a long wait so left it and it ended up shipping 2 days later anyway.

That said, my last couple of Gearbest orders haven't been a problem anyway, shipped quickly, arrived in the standard 2 - 3 weeks. Not sure if live chatting with them first to check stocks would be any help if you're worried..

  • i have one of these, battery life is terrible, especially if playing around in windows. That said, it's a great android tablet and adequate windows replacement for when I don't won't to drag my SP3 around.

I highly recommend this case/keyboard combo if you're planning on using windows:

    • $16.99 USD at Geekbuying rather than the $25.99 at Banggood.

    • android tablet?
