Does the plane fly at gigabit speeds?

    • The only in-flight entertainment I'd be having is a LAN party!

Comes with a free Zika infection also.

  • We went all over South America with LAN.

Shithouse planes, but cheap and they didn't kill us. Although La Paz was a close call.

just snort coke to get over the experience

    • They are the main airline (with TAM) in SA, unfortunately and there is no much other choice if you fly all over SA…
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_airlines_in_So…

    • Shithouse planes? Most of the planes were brand new when I flew them.

      Qantas fleet age =8.9 years
      LAN fleet age = 5.3

Don't let facts get in the way of misinformation and unrealistic expectations.

      • Cause old planes are a bad thing?

        • Not sure where I implied that, but please elaborate?

I Enjoy flying with Qantas but to say an airline has "shithouse" planes when they have a fleet age of 5 years and operate 787 and a350 smacks of someone that probably has no clue and shouldn't be spreading false information

@skimmermilk: the plane and it's age aren't the only considerations. Planes actually haven't changed that match from the consumer perspective in 20 years. I would happily fly a 747 still.

The newer planes are often just cheaper to fuel, run, crew and maintain meaning cheaper flights. Hence why budget airlines (hint: not good) have newer fleets as it is a much more price sensitive market!

The thing that does change (and the airline has complete control of) is the internals of the plane. Even an ancient 747 can have a nice fit out with modern tech.

This is how good airlines and budget airlines differ. A budget airline will cram more seat in to the same plane and have low tech.

I haven't flown LAN but just trying to tell you it doesn't matter how new or what plane they use. Jetstar uses the latest dreamliners and still manage to make it suck. They use new planes because it is cheaper!

          @xsacha:

Again you somehow keep taking my comments And implying something I haven't even discussed. And you haven't elebarated where I said old planes are bad. I was simply replying to the Intial post saying LAN planes are 'shithouse'. Just an FYI LAN are a full service airline.

You have used the one simplistic example of Jetstar utilising 787s and brushed the entire aviation industry with your own opinion, that the 787 is primarily used for low cost carriers. Did you even know the first lot of 787 ordered by the Qantas group were in fact meant to be utilised by Qantas. Judging by your response you didn't

Most people understand Any aircraft can be changed to suit a particular carriers needs; it's not something you've just discovered.

Here's a quick snap shot of new aircraft primary users

          A380
          Singapore
          Emirates
          Qantas

          787
          Ana
          Japan airlines
          Air India
          Qatar

          A350
          Qatar
          Finnair
          Tam
          Vietnam

Strangely none are low cost carriers and are All full service airlines.

Please I'm happy to keep discussing because I take an interest in aviation but stop implying that I am saying something I haven't/nor would ever imply

        • @skimmermilk: You referred to LANs newer fleet a few times. I have been trying to explain the age and type of plane (eg. 787) is not related. What I am saying is that the internal layout and tech is what makes the difference. If Qantas was to use the 787 under Qantas branding, it would have had fewer seats and not been 'shithouse', so to speak.

The reason for my replies is you keep mentioning the age and type of planes as if it means something.

"Shithouse planes? Most of the planes were brand new when I flew them."
Here you are implying the planes are good just because they are new.
"And you haven't elebarated where I said old planes are bad."

  • Possible to do like fly into santiago and return from rio?

I have seen cheap flights to chili earlier. But they were qantas? Do you reckon better wait for them? Im not concerned more on safety rather than service. Are these safe?

    • LAN and Qantas code share and are one world partners. I found LAN to be great

    • As per the other response lan are a great. I prefer the LAN plane over to Santiago as its a 787 but that's personal preference because of the new oxygen technology.

    • *Chile

  • cant find any 1199 fare. Trying to book 1 April till 15th May. Comes to around $1800.
Also, anyone know if you can book flight to say Lima and then stop in Santiago for 2-3 weeks?

    • I was looking in Aug-Sept and found plenty. Cheaper from Melb via Auckland on Dreamliner than through Sydney on other plane. For your plan try multi city search.
