Free Phone Line Connection with Belong Internet - Save $299 Installation Fee

150

If you're looking for an ADSL2+ connection and do not currently have an active phone line then the best deal out there is with Belong as they are the only company currently waiving the normal $299 phone line installation fee charged by all other ISPs.

Furthermore, you can sign up to Belong without a contract and still get this $299 fee waived and then leave them after the first month.

Mod: Note that other fees may apply (such as mandatory modem fees) and installation may not usually cost $299 - see comments for more details.

Does it say anywhere on the website that the phone connection is free?

        • What was your beep test score??

  • Hey kearnsy,

This is from the Belong site:

"There is no cost for standard activation or technician appointments.
If you need a new phone line installed there may be a cost if trenching is required at your home. If this is required, you’ll get a phone call to discuss the work, and you’ll be informed of any costs before the work is started."

Basically this deal is great if you have had an active phone line in the past (or at least have a wall socket in your place) and Telstra has disconnected the line.

    • +1

So why would activation then cost $299. $299 is the usual fee to trench a connection if there none if first place.

      • Nope, $299 is to the first line to a premises, trenching (if done by Telstra) costs extra.

Source: I worked in voice & DSL provisioning for several years :)

        • Fair enough. I'm guessing urban area wouldn't require this done to existing property

        • @Gavman: Exactly right. Unless it's a newly-built house or it's been disconnected for a while and the line "re-purposed" you would usually only be up for $59 or $149.

    • if "have had an active phone line in the past (or at least have a wall socket in your place) and Telstra has disconnected the line", then you don't need to pay $299, only about $49 to activate the phone line.

      • It's confusing, but it comes down to Telstra "disconnecting" physical lines when they run out of ports. It's ridiculous, because I heard of instances where a line was connected one week earlier, and the next week they tried to charge $190 to "reconnect" it. This is a separate charge from getting a phone line activated on a "connected" line (that's another $49). Yeah, go figure.

I am with Belong and would definitely suggest using their service! I would try and get a referral as it will save you $20 off your first bill.

Do they still offer the carrier pigeon service ?

        • +3

@jv: carrier dodo service has been discontinued due to extinction

      • I do miss Telstra Cable! Moving out of the parents house does have its draw backs

  • Furthermore, you can sign up to Belong without a contract

And they charge you a higher monthly fee for that too…

Ummm, this has always been the case with Belong… probably belongs in the forums rather than deals right?

Yes, but this was just posted for the referral credits…

In my case, my phone line had been active years ago, then the phone line had been disconnected. I called Telstra and they said after 6 months of inactivity, they can disconnect your line and even though all the wiring was still in place, I was always quoted $299 to reactivate the line.

    • +1

      Then you were lied to.

    • +1

I was always quoted $299 to reactivate the line.

That's to install a new physical line.

Reactivating a line should be around $80…

      • +2

It should be even less than $80. But it's not. They charge a lot of money for it, just for doing some work on a patch board.
A telstra REP once told me that one way to avoid that fee is to get them to connect it, saying you are convinced the line is active, and then "lodge a fault" the next day.

    • I'm in the same situation. They want to charge me $299 to send out a tech because its "been a while since a service has been connected". The premises is 4 years old.

The better deal with Belong is $100 cashback through CashRewards: http://www.cashrewards.com.au/belong

    • Has anyone successfully received cashback through cashrewards? I signed up with belong through cashrewards last week and i haven't received a tracking receipt.

      • I haven't, and have been chasing them for weeks but haven't had a response yet…

        • That sucks. I guess im on the same boat. I only choose belong over tpg because of the Cashrewards cashback. Felt a bit let down here. I wonder if TA can help out with this.

        • @Kingfabay: I've just got a reply from their FB team and the cashback has been included as Pending. The FB staff do seem slightly more responsive than the email people so maybe give them a go? Just keep (politely) chasing them seems to be the way to go.

        • @magicmoose: Thats fantastic news. Thanks.

  • Interesting to notice that Belong is a division of Telstra…

    • why? they always have been..

  • Hi,

would it be wise to do this deal if I want to move from Naked Internet to ADSL2+ or Cable?

As I don't have a 'active' phone line (i have a phone line but it is disconnected), and I want to join TPG or Telstra cable plans.

  • I got mine installed 3 months ago. I needed a phone line and there was no charge. Telstra told me that it was going to be $299 for a new phone line (because it was the first one) and so I was expecting it but nothing ever came of it. I had a socket but Belong said that they would cover the first socket anyway with the activation which was free. Even though there was a socket there was never a phone line connected to the apartment which seems rather stupid. Good deal in my eyes.

  • Does anyone know if the $100 cashrewards cashback is combinable with the $20 referral promo code? The cashrewards site has the usual disclaimer that promo codes may invalide cashback but I would be keen to hear from anyone who knows what happens in practice in this case.

    • Just following up on Formal Hall's prevous query… does anyone know or has anyone tried to combine the $100 CashRewards cashback with the $20 referral promo code?

      • Any updates? :)

        • Did you guys signed up using the referral code? Did you guys receive cash back as well?
