    I've always wanted to play around with one of these. But since I own a BES920 and an Aeropress, would it be worth it? I do love having new toys to play with!

    • +1

      one of my favourites ways to make a long black, i have a BES920 too. go for the 3 cup!

      • +2

        He can already make a top shelf long black with his aeropress.

        • +1

          This.
          Especially if you have a metal filter that doesn't soak up the oils.
          There was a Moka Pot at our Holiday house. It was better than the french press we'd brought with us, but not as good as my Aeropress at work.
          The Coffee is HOT.

        • +1

          @scubacoles:

          Yea I have the metal disc. Been a while since I've used the AP. Might have to dig it out and have a play.

        • +1

          @Ingram:
          I make mine inverted and press out the Crema while still inverted so that it sit's on top of the plastic "mesh" cap.
          Then I quickly invert it into a cup and press out as normal.

        • @Ingram: Does the metal disc really make that much difference? How many perforations are in it?

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:

          More crema for sure. I believe there are two types of metal discs now but when I ordered mine years ago there was just the one. Worth it if only so you're not stuffing around with paper ones.

        • +1

          @Ingram:

          Yes there's the able disk standard and fine versions. Not sure how they compare to paper filters (only ever used the paper filters) but I don't see how they can be any worse.

          You can get them from beanbay (coffeesnobs store - no I'm not affiliated in any way) at $16 each, but knowing the savvy folk here at ozbargain I'm sure you can find it cheaper.

        • @hamwhisperer:
          Definitely a better tasting cup.. which makes sense, cause the paper will cling on to the oils.

      • Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows how much coffee is produced per cup please?

        • +1

          Each cup is approximately 50ml. So, 3 cups = 150ml.. 6 cups = 300ml and so on

    • I dunno about you, but I used to try and get dual servings out of my aeropress (but it takes so much effort to compress it)
      Now I save all the scrap coffee after one brew and put it in the fridge.
      When I get about half a cup worth of the grounds, I put in 1.5 cups of water, put it on the stove in a pot for 20 minutes on low, and OzBargain out myself one last cup from it all.

      Have always wondered about these devices too.

        Go one coarser on the grind.

        • I'm using an old electric grinder, it's a small handheld thing similar to this.
          https://webshop.cashconverters.com.au/item/2040320/coffee-gr…

          It's … doing an ok job, pretty quickly.

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:
          Looks more like a "Spice" chopper than a coffee grinder.
          Does it have blades or is it actually a mill?

          There's a pretty decent looking hand grinder now available out of China that'll grind coffee much better I reckon.
          http://www.newfrog.com/p/stainless-steel-hand-manual-handmad…

        • @scubacoles: It is sold as a coffee grinder and about 95% of the volume gets ground up quite well, to almost powder levels but the remaining 5% seems to bead out fairly large.
          EDIT: I saw my cousin who is into coffee got a "Porlex" grinder and it's meant to be pretty good, is this one of those?

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:
          Just cause it's sold as a grinder, doesn't make it a grinder. If it has blades, it's a chopper.
          The output will be random sizes and shapes when you want it to be even size and shape.

          It's hard to believe, but a good grind is one of the most important aspects of coffee making.
          Any coffee snob website will tell you the same, and that's because it makes a massive difference.

          When our Sunbeam Espresso Machine and Grinder die. I'm seriously considering SPending 80% of the budget on a higher quality (more expensive) grinder than the Sunbeam EM480. Cause from my experience to date, and all the advice I've read, the grinder is the most important component.

        • @scubacoles: I think you're right, it's a chopper, not a grinder.
          I hold it at random angles, shake it a bit and what have you and it ends up producing a half fine grind overall.

          I just went on a web bonanza and saw one review whinging about the cheap one you linked, although some other people said for the money it's quite good. It's pretty cheap so I may just try it.

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:
          I don't expect it to be amazing, but it'll be better than what you have currently for not too much coin.
          Looks like a copy of a Porlex brand hand grinder (I have a Porlex mini for Work and travel) that sell for about $60. https://espressounplugged.com.au/porlex-tall-hand-coffee-gri…

          If you can get a cheap Sunbeam EM480 or EM450 then grab it. They occasionally come up on sale at BigW.

        • @scubacoles: I've ordered it, I have paypal credit lying around.
          Any tips on the best place to get the metal disc for the Aeropress?

        • +2

          @scubacoles: I recently upgraded from the Sunbeam grinder to the Breville Smart Grinder (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/215068). I thought the Sunbeam was decent enough but the Breville is much better - precise dose, more consistent grind, easy to precisely shift the grind setting, not as messy, less noise. Still using my old Sunbeam Cafe Series espresso machine, it's great and the new grinder has given it a new lease of life.

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:
          I just bought it locally.. Prices seemed to be the same $15-18 (after shipping) no matter where you shop.
          I have the standard and have had no issues with grit. It's pretty flimsy, I can't imagine how flimsy the fine version must be!

        • @scubacoles: That's precisely what I expected from the look of the thing. If it's too sturdy, it won't let through any bloody coffee.

          I re-use my paper filters at the moment, if you're super careful you can get nearly 10 out of one, 3 to 5 easily.

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:

          See my post above. They also have porlex grinders ($50/$55 for the mini/tall) if you need.

        • @scubacoles:

          Thanks for the help, I ended up getting 2 diff metal discs - tried both, they both seem good to me, might be my imagination but I think I might be getting more oils as you stated.
          Also used my kitchen microscales, I see I was under dosing, I thought I was being eager - but I'm only using 15 grams, not 18. Gonna up it.

    • you would need a really fine grind to use this right?
      would it be a bitter coffee?

      • Guy at my old job used to use one with Turkish coffee and IIRC it was SUPER fine grind (think like international roast fine)

    • +1

      These are great when you go on holidays. Easy to pack.

      What I do normally results in a nice, rich coffee without bitterness.

      1. Grind coffee a 1 or 2 steps courser than for e.g. BES920 espresso machine.
      2. Fill cold water to just under the valve
      3. Fill basket with coffee. Just tap it flat, no tamping like with the BES920 espresso machine.
      4. Screw together, set on stove at low to medium heat (ideally gas) - dont blast the thing on max
      5. It should take 2-3 minutes to brew. watch the espresso pouring out of the riser.
      6. Take it off the stovetop as soon as you hear venting, and/or see excessive bubbling.

      Careful once its off the stovetop, the body of the machine is super hot.

      Enjoy the coffee straight, pour with 85°C water for a long black, or with heated milk for a sort of latte.

      I use one of the Bialetti stainless models with an induction cooktop as I dont have gas cooking available.
      Similar to this one (which is also on sale) http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/all-kitchen/bialetti-bia…

  • Thanks for posting this, OP. I got the 6 cups one for 32.97, which is about $1.5 more than the price of the 3 cups one from last night's deal, and $5.5 cheaper than the previous 6 cups one. Beauty!

    I would look at the Bialetti Brikka range instead. They have a pressure valve inside that allows brewing at the correct pressure for an espresso, leaving the grinds in contact with the boiling water for much less time, stopping overextraction and bitterness, and also creating the crema we all love :)
    I have been waiting to find the Brikka range on special forever. And I understand about the toys, I have an Ambient&spresso machine, aeropress, and filter setups, but the Brikka sounds perfect for camping, and who doesn't love a perfect decadent coffee in the middle of nowhere :)

    • this one: http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/bialetti-bialetti-bikka-…

      No idea if that's a good price. There's also a 2 cup version "on sale" too. I'm tempted, can never have too many coffee toys.

      • THat seems like a good price to give it a go. Also have a lot of coffee toys, but what's one more?

      • Picked myself up one. Scanned for $55, but they price matched online when I showed them the webpage.

        • And the results?

        • @scubacoles:
          Haven't got it home yet. Also, apparently needs 2-3 brews to 'season' the pot. My experience also tells me it may take a few experimentation brews before being perfect.
          From what I've read/seen today though, it should be good.

        • @Jonaseymour:

          Yeah, I'm very interested. Seems to solve my main concern with Moka Pots.

        • +2

          @scubacoles: just put on my first brew. It's not perfect, and even the 4 cup doesn't make a whole lot of coffee (really 2 decent espresso shots), but it's by far the most intense stovetop I've ever had…
          Crema was better than moka, but not as good as I've seen people make. I'm sure that will just take Sune experimenting.

        • @Jonaseymour:

          Hey Jonaseymour, can you post your receipt? I would like to buy one, but the price has increased. I'll try to price match.

        • +1

          @Jonaseymour:

          I had to return my brikka. Damn thing was leaking from 3 places. Got a replacement, also leaking. I'm at my wits end with this thing.

          I get the old moka out which the brikka is replacing and have no trouble at all.

        • @Trickey:

          You bought with the lower price of $47~48 ? If yes, can you post the receipt ? ;P

          I would like to try this model.

        • @mewdex: Sorry mate, I can try to remember to do it tonight.

          @Trickey: I've had leaks on Moka pots before and have put a little olive oil around the screw threads that has stopped it in the past. Might be worth a go.

        • @Trickey: Same got mine in the mail today and coffee comes out everywhere. I also have the Moka and it is great but the Brikka is really poor quality. Did some further research and there are lots of reviews stating the same re leaks.

        • @MaMan: That's really disappointing. It's frustrating watching videos of people making coffee in their Brikka without issue only to have two units that would be better used as sieves.

          @Jonaseymour: Thanks for the info but I returned the second unit and took the refund. Can't say I'm impressed with Bialetti as a brand. I can understand one unit being faulty, but two? Fool me once…

        • @Trickey: Yup that's my story too. Bought one which turned out to be leaking (even after trying everything). Now apparently there are none in the state. So only option I have left is to get my money back.

          A little disappointed as I was really looking forward to this brikka.

        • @datzed:

          Makes me wonder if anyone here at ozbargain got a working unit. Not that I have any real interest since I'll never buy or recommend a Bialetti product.

        • @Trickey: Not the Brikka but I've bought the Moka Express and it's working fine (though I haven't used it a lot yet).

    • Interesting..

    • Is this a good price stillloutthere?

      • +1

        The cheapest a quick search turned up for the 4 cup was 70…… Its 48 at myer now so seems pretty good.

    • I also would like to try the brikka, but still thinking if I should pay $50 for it … I will search some reviews, but Probably I will just buy both. The Bialetii last for ages.

  • Does someone has a screenshot of the price or a receipt? I went to Myer Central Brisbane yesterday but they were sold out of the Brikka model. So I decided to go to other store today, but now the price increased!

  • After using a moka express for years, just went and purchased a brikka from Myer for $55. Also bought some seven seeds coffee grind so cant wait to try this tonight! Just hope it doesn't leak!

    EDIT: Note that the price on the shelf is still $79 but scans at $55. Also had a nice chat with Vince, an older Italian sales gent who commented he has three of them and reckons they make better coffee than some of the $1000+ machines.

  • So turns out mine is leaking. And now they are pretty much sold out of the 4 cup brikka across the state.
    Sheeeeiiiitttttt

    • +1

      Mine is also leaking. Have you figured out what to do or just got a refund?

      • I ended up getting a refund because there was no possibility to exchange (all sold out in Victoria). I even asked them if there was any possibility to get a refund and then buy the same item when they have it back in stock for the same price, but they said no (which I was disappointed about).

        I was tempted to play around with things such as olive oil or even Teflon on the threads, but I use my every day so I doubt any of the solutions would have been effective in the long run.

        EDIT: I've got a feeling myer will not be restocking the brikka. They haven't since this sale, and their shelf at Melbourne Central has been re-arranged to not have any space left for the brikka.

        • Well, after work I decided to play with it. Tried everything possible.

          Tried Olive Oil on threads
          Tried Tighten up
          Tried use the 6-CUP Moka Express gasket ( same diameter )
          Less Water
          More Water
          High Heat
          Low Heat

          I give up after more than 1 hour trying, and don't think I'll get another as probably it will happen the same thing. The problem is not on the gasket as I was thinking.

          Returning it tomorrow.

        • @mewdex: Well, today I bought one from David Jones. Guess what. This one freaking leaks too. FFS!!!!! All I wanted was to make decent coffee really cheaply. So disappointed.

  • Price is back. Brikka for 47, moka 6 cup for 32. I was too lazy to go collect it hence there was no store with the brikka close to me, so I bought a Brikka 4 cup, a Moka Express 6 cup and a Fiametta Green 3 cup.

    I hope that I don't have problems with the Brikka model as most of people here.
