  • How much can I sell a lounge pass for?

    • $60 ish, maybe? Google it. Either here or OCAU classifieds sell them. Probs gum tree too.

      • +2

I think OCAU banned selling them recently.

        • Can no longer sell these on fleeBay, Gumtree, and OCAU.

OZBargain is the best bet. Maybe Tradingpost too.

    • I sold 2 on Ebay a while ago, should be about $100 after the Ebay and Paypal fees

      • I am not sure how to sell it. I got 2 visit passes too from citibank cc, but it comes in a card with your name printed. And the lounge always matched the card with boarding pass.

        • Heh, they print names on them now? The one time I bought a pass off eBay (about 18 months ago), it had "ANZ" written on it, but didn't have a name - that must have changed relatively recently?

        • +1

@ajdlinux: No. The Ciitbank longe access is a Priority Pass account, with two included visits.

As for Ebay, don't bother anymore. They'll get taken down within a day, and even if you were successful, they'll annul the transaction, and even restrict your selling rights if you try it again.

Fantastic for using the business lounges when travelling overseas on Jetstar.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Ah, yeah, Priority Pass is quite different. In that case, I'm pretty sure QF passes still don't have names on them.

I've noticed that eBay has cracked down - the one time I did buy off eBay was just as they were beginning to ramp up enforcement.

        • @ajdlinux: I sold two qantas club passes the other day. Very risky in hindsight as the buyer could have just taken my $$. But it worked out and I got paid.

eBay is not recommended. list them here or on one of the various FF forums.

        • +1

@ChickenTalon: yeah, I wouldn't go for eBay now. The FF forum I frequent tends to focus more on sharing passes with the poor and underprivileged Bronze and Silver members of the forum rather than selling them…

        • @ajdlinux: even if I didn't have status I'd be selling them, rarely are they worth $50 at an Aussie domestic airport. Only for a long stopover at a qantas run international lounge would they be worth that kind of money.

        • +1

@ChickenTalon: Qantas Club not really worth it. Qantas International Business Lougne at Melbourne/Sydney - could be worth it, so long as you eat there, have a few drinks, take a shower, etc.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: The Sydney IBL is fantastic, but the QC can also be great if you're awaiting a connection in the other direction - the pass I bought on eBay was used when I had a ~3 hr wait at SYD coming back from Seoul. If I were flying QF all the way through, I wouldn't have had that long a wait, but we were flying the international leg on CZ and thus wanted to leave an adequate gap for delays and such. After ICN->CAN->SYD, a shower was very welcome.

The AA Admirals Club 30 day membership is a useful option if you're doing a lot of flying over a short period (I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that they changed the rules temporarily to make it harder to get into QCs, but I think that's changed back now?)

  • +9

You leave out some very important information:

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product offered by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 12 month period are ineligible for this offer.

    • +4

However, people over on AFF report that they still get the points.

In fact, even me from my own personal experience, I can confirm that I got it anyway.

Held the Virgin Platinum AMEX for about 2 months before applying for the Platinum Edge with a bonus points offer. The same clause was there, but still got the bonuses which I was supposed to have been excluded from anyway.

      • Well, I suppose that might make it a risk worth taking, but I also think if you hold 2 Amex issued cards it can be difficult to get a third.

        • +1

Yea up to the person - but I agree that this info should be included in the OP.

This would still apply for someone who holds one who's planning to apply for this as a second one though.

      • +8

Adult Friend Finder is a very dodgy website my good sir.

        • Haha I gettit!

      • -1

A Virgin Amex is offered by Virgin, not Amex. It doesn't count. You have to have an Amex card from Amex (in the last 12 months) to miss out on the points.

        • By that logic this card is issued by Qantas and not AMEX and also doesn't count… so how do you explain that?

        • @illumination: Actually Kothos is correct. Virgin Amex is issued by Virgin Money, just like CBA/ANZ/Westpac/etc. Amex cards are issued by their various banks. This card is issued directly by American Express Australia, partnered with Qantas. So unless you hold an Amex card issued directly by Amex in the past 12 months, the bonus 2500 points shouldn't be a problem.

        • @KayDat: Virgin Amex is NOT issued by Virgin Money. Hence it's marketed on Amex website.

Don't give advice if you don't know the facts.

        • +1

@illumination: No, the card issuer for this card is Amex. They can name it whatever they like, and they've called it a Qantas Amex card because you get QFF points on it (and various other things). Qantas doesn't issue credit cards AFAIK.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Huh, you're right, Virgin don't offer an Amex, only Visa. However, the Virgin card on the Amex website is called a Velocity Amex. No "Virgin Amex" card appears to exist.

        • @Kothos: Correct. But to suggest a "Virgin Amex" doesn't count to being an existing cardmember is completely wrong.

Of course, past experience indicates Amex don't seem to enforce this rule when it comes to awarding bonus points..

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Yeah I got thrown by the (apparently incorrect) terminology, and made an ass our of u and me.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Huh, I guess I wasn't paying attention. My mistake. =\

        • @KayDat: Yea you and Kothos threw me off for a moment. I was thinking no way - the Virgin Velocity AMEX Platinum is definitely a AMEX by AMEX.. the letterheads were all AMEX, the login page is AMEX, the application page for applying for a card is all AMEX.
No doubt that Virgin Velocity Platinum AMEX and this one are both definitely counted as direct-issued AMEX cards (as it seems both of you have now realised).

        • @illumination:

so how about Diamond commonwealth credit card? applied and got one Amex credit card and one normal CBA credit card.

Do i still eligible to meet the condition of this Qantas AmEx Premium Card to gain 80k QFF points?

        • @nicwinner:
So you have two CCs, a Commonwealth Bank issued credit card.. and another AMEX-issued credit card as well?

Then no, because of the AMEX-issued one.
If you only had the Commonwealth Bank issued one then ok.

        • @illumination:

i think both were issued by CBA ?

the Diamond Awards American Express card, one the back it says "this card is issued by Commonwealth bank of Australia pursuant to license from American Express"

so i am eligible to apply?

        • @nicwinner: Just to clarify: do you have an Amex in addition to the CBA issued Amex? If not, you're 100% fine.
If you have an Amex issued card in addition to your CBA issued Amex, you technically do not qualify, but, as has been noted here, they will probably give you the points anyway.

Also, if you're going to apply for this card, please help out Ozbargainers and use somebody's referral link per the below link. Once you have your card, you can generate your own link, and hopefully somebody will pay it forward for you. :)

          Thanks John.

          I'll use the referrals thanks.

and yes, i have no other Amex cards but the CBA issued one.

          cheers Nic

    • +2

I already had a few cards with Amex directly and was still able to get my 80,000 MR points after applying for my Platinum Charge.

      Your mileage may vary.

  • Hmm seems like a reasonable deal. Anyone know of any better card deals around atm that use Qantas FF?

      http://www.qantas.com/cardselector/detailAction.do?cardname=…

      • Yeh $7500 might be a bit much. Don't have any big expenditure items coming up in the next couple of months.

      • ANZ points not as good as Qantas or Velocity in terms of flight redemption

      • Too bad you can't get it if you're already a certain ANZ CC holder.

Wanted to upgrade to the black but wasn't eligible :(

      • Does my tuition count into the 7500? if so its really easy ahahah

  • What can you get with 82,500FFP any decent upgrades?

    • +1

its about $500 worth of myer gift cards at the moment
      or
40,000 is usually a one way from melb/syd to LA if you're flexible with dates but you cop taxes.
60,000 is an upgrade to business class i think. 40k is premium economy?

to give a rough idea i haven't logged in and looked.

everyone has their opinion on this…and this is just mine:

I end up using my points for products rather than flights…ie. wanted to book Hawaii…its going Jetstar and after using points for 2 people, $600 worth of taxes. That was almost 1 fare cost.
So unless the destination is specific and you're very flexible with dates and you have a lot of points (eg. one way first class to dubai).

i just bought a Dyson cooling fan for 72000 points (sale) the other day which comes to like $440 in gift cards in comparison…and I'm yet to see that fan go for that price.

      • Also do you still get status points if you were book an upgrade to your flight?

        • No. Generally don't get points or status credits for the upgraded flight. But you will get points and SCs for the original fare you booked.

I say generally because for some glitches in the matrix I have been credited for the upgraded class. When they've rebooked me or changed routing etc on an upgraded flight.

      • +1

I just bought a Webber Q3000, Starter Pack and cover :) 155K points. Translates to about the sale price you can buy for in store @0.006 but really for me its free…paid everything throughout the year on my card then at Chrissy buy myself and the family a present.

It actually came from Appliance Online and they are delivering Monday ! :)

  • -4

What can the Qantas points get?

  • Considering upgrading from economy to business from MEL to LAX one way is only 72000 points, $249 is pretty good value.

    • +5

If you get an upgrade that is

  • I applied and got approved instantly- hopefully those 80k points come thru- im an existing card holder, but I may have ticked the "no im not an existing member" box!!

    • +2

Haha let us know how you go!!

      • +1

Heres an update. Ive purchased a Jetstar fare on the card, and I have been rewarded with 5000 Bonus points for this. The terms and conditions state that:

2,500 bonus Qantas Points after your first Card spend in Australia on selected Qantas products and services.

I am also very close to spending the $3000 required for the 80000 Bonus points. Will update when/if this happens

    • I'm in the same boat, so I'm curious to know whether you know for certain if you can still receive the points even though you already have an amex card.

    • +2

I can confirm that as an existing amex card holder, I have now received the bonus points. And they were credited to the account on the exact transaction that took me over the $3000 spend limit.

      • How many AMEXs did you hold prior to this?
Asking as I'm thinking of biting the bullet right before this expires, but I already hold 2x AMEXs. My concern (separate to whether or not I'll get the bonus points) is that I've heard AMEX only allow you to hold 2x direct AMEXs at any given time..

        • +1

When I applied for this i already had a amex (blue card)- discovery i think its called, and bank issued amex aswell

  • +1

T&C: Enjoy two complimentary Qantas Club lounge invitations8 each year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services

It means they won't issue with 2 lounge invitations untill one buy Qantas ticket.

    • From memory the free 50,000 ANZ platinum card deal also came with 1 or 2 free lounge passes. You had to call them to get it though.

      • Any more details on this?? I got the platinum card and didnt see the passes??

      • That was ANZ Black, not Plat.

    • A simple SYD-MEL will do, or the taxes on any award redemption.

    • They will send you the passes after you purchase Qantas/Jetstar fare with the card. I purchased a Jetstar pricebeat fare for $70 syd-bne return and this has activated the passes to be sent to me within 8 weeks. I rang to confirm this

  • Any idea whether these card holders can then use Apple Pay in Australia?

  • Can someone please confirm for me. I have an ANZ Amex card. If I apply for this. Am I eligible for the bonus points?

    • +2

I do not see why not. Different banks, different offers. If you apply for one more NAB credit card you can get 60'000 more :)

      • 142,500 FFP without even flying. Although my VEDA score will get a battering.

        • Not that many compared to some here.
And "without even flying" - as you and many others here can confirm, the bulk of your points really doesn't come from flying ;) unless you're someone that doesn't follow these CC bonus points offers.

        • @illumination:

And here I was spending my hard earn flights when I could have done it the Ozbargain way.

    • Yes. The restriction refers to bank-issued AMEX, not direct-issued AMEX (which this is).

  • -2

I'm only on contract work atm, will that affect my application? Do they really do these credit checks?

    • +1

lol yeah, even when you buy take aways they will track and trace how much you spend, becareful

  • -3

why would anyone pay to go to that shitty lounge anyway… better off spending your money at an airport bar.

    • +1

Some places (I'm looking at you launceston and BNE international "first") I agree. But most are pretty good. Comfortable shower, sh*t n shave with reasonable food and drinks.

The invites are also worth a bit if you don't want to use them, if you can find someone wiling to buy them. But I agree that $50-60, which is the going rate, is not usually what I'd value it at. Although If you've got a 6hr stopover in Singapore then it makes a lot of sense.

    • +1

Really useful when you have a nice 4 hour layover in Singapore going to London. Also particularly useful if you have a child and need a place to just dump your stuff safely and Vege out.

  • -1

any1 know if you the fee is charged upon start of the account or after one year? Can the card be cancelled and points still claimed?

  • What's the go with the Tavel insurance on these? I spend more than 250 a year on travel insurance as it is.

    • why don't then get Commonwealth Bank Platinum card, once approve you et two cards - AMEX + Master, and you get all the benefit of AMEX + CBA Rewards (includes free worldwide travel insurance for you and four others)

    • Most platinum cards have complimentary insurance, check the pds though as it might not have what you need.

    • +1

Amex travel insurance is a joke, read the PDS. I always double book travel insurance with a decent company (normally allianz).

The other thing is you have no coverage on anything you don't pay on Amex. Book a flight on points and the whole trip isn't covered. Hire a car in Asia or europe won't accept Amex, so no cover (actually they may not cover hire cars at all on this level of card). If something goes wrong and you get stuck in a foreign port then they will only cover expenses you incur on the Amex. It would be ok if you were in the states where Amex is regularly accepted but everywhere else you're going to get stuck paying for all your accommodation and food because most places don't accept either.

  • I hope people taking advantage of this opportunity take the time to plan out how you are going to redeem your $249+ "benefit" from using this card. I suspect many people will not enter an event into their diary for example when doing so may mean the difference between saving that $249 - or not.

  • +6

Lol OP started every paragraph with a "yeah". Maybe he is a rapper…

    • +1

      Should've been
"Yeah each to their own" too huh?

  • Hmmm… i already have the The Qantas American Express® Ultimate Card from the OzB deal a few months ago…. wish i could get this platinum for it's bonus points as well!!!

  • I currently have an AMEX card from ANZ. If I apply, will I get the points ?
