About $580 to build a Core i5 pc with the similar specs and the same performance from local retailers.

Guys, don't bother. The Lenovo quality is very questionable currently. I'm associated with HW support on these things and the failure rate straight out of the box is alarming sadly. No official DOA process from Lenovo either, so only repair and high number of parts not available in stock for replacement. I see a number of Business Partners and Distributors complaining of the high 'out of box' failure rates on NEW Lenovo systems as well.

    Save yourselves the hassle.

Care to share which component is failing? That way if someone buys one and there is a high chance of PSU failure for example, they can pay closer attention to that.

The TS140 has been on ozbargain quite often so perhaps others who have purchased can chip in with their thoughts both good and bad.

Bought the i3 version from this earlier deal.
Working fine without problem so far.

        Pros:

        • Solid construction.
        • Has one of the quietest pair of fans I've ever seen. Really impressive on this part.
        • Comes with ECC RAM, but also accepts Non-ECC ones. Unless you really need it, you can probably sell it on gumtree and use it to buy Non-ECC double the size from regular sales here (e.g. Amazon, shoppingexpress, etc.).
        • BIOS POST goes really quickly.
        • PSU has 80+ Bronze rating (although it's quite standard these days based on what I've seen in Dell Factory Outlet).

        Cons:

        • PSU is only a measly 270w.
        • Fussy motherboard power connector. 14-pin instead of 24-pin. Upgrading PSU requires purchasing an adapter or DIY.
        • Difficult to do cable management in due to layout and stiff SATA power cables (in the end I just left it dangling everywhere).

I use this PC as a light gaming machine with a GTX 550 Ti, SSD, and a pair of HDDS. I bought an adapter similar to this from eBay.

Overall, I'd only recommend this if you want that Xeon processor and ECC RAM. Otherwise, just go for OptiPlex Mini Tower from Dell Factory Outlet or build your own. The saving isn't as good anymore now that our AUD is weak.
I like this machine. I absolutely regret purchasing a HP Gen8 Microserver over TS140 from that sale. Just my 2c.

If you have any questions, just fire away.

PS: start3r, since you're associated with HW support for these things, care to share with us what the common problems are so I can at least be prepared? Thanks!

Likewise. Regretting all the upgrades and cost associated with the HP gen8 micro srv when u sit back and calculate everything u spent on it. Then again that's life with modders like me. Cpu and heatsink upgrade costing approx $500 alone… Damn aud to USD rate.

I also have this lenovo srv i got for free from work. Practically much better to work with. Running fine 24/7 for almost 2 yrs.. Don't forget to blast it with air everyvfew months…to rid of dust..

        • @j03: what heat sink did you upgrade the G8 with?

        • +1

          @deivu:

Pulled it out of an ancient Intel s5xxxx mobo 3ghz cpu combo. Took off the fan and got the super heavy copper heatsink with fine fins. Prob was fins were facing other way from the rear fan, so needed to add mini fans on the side of HS to pull air out. But had to skim approx 10mm on top of fins. Mind u I put an e3-1230v2 which is a 69w.

          Full load avg 55-65C

        • @j03: thanks for the reply!

    • Not handling DOA would be against Australian consumer law, so I assume you're referring to US purchases only here. Happy owner of a TS140 myself. It's a sexy beast!

  • I wonder how quiet these things are.

  • what's the difference between this and a normal PC? sounds the same…maybe only difference is adding "server" to the name lol

    • Uses ECC RAM. Generally server parts are built for higher reliability.

  • Any actual bargains though?
