    Too bad, low res screen….

When $200 phones can come with 1080p IPS/AMOLED displays, I find absolutely no excuse for RRP $1000 laptops to come with 1366x768 TN displays. It's getting super old.

      • +2

Yep, and its actually a vast majority too. I work at a retailer that sells laptop computers and most of them under 1100 bucks have 1366x768 displays… except for the Pendo 11 inch windows convertible which has a 1080p display. Really strange considering its like $450 with 2gb of ram and an intel atom. I just don't understand when laptops with an i5 & 8gb ram still run at such low resolutions.

        • Yeah it's insane, those 1366x768 TN panels ruin any laptop, luckily a lot of them have US counterparts with 1080p IPS or higher panels, so you can buy a replacement screen and swap it out, but definitely not ideal.

        • @deanylev: swapping out a laptop screen does not sound fun

        • @The Land of Smeg: Take it from me, it's not….

    • But Intel hasn't improved their CPU much since 2th Gen. This is even more evident since 4th Gen (Haswell). I have absolutely no interest in upgrading my 4th gen to 5th or 6th.

The 6200U is about 20% better than the 4210U in benchmarks. They were released 15 months apart. While it's not keeping up with the [bastardised version of] Moore's Law - it would be considered pretty good in any other industry. Most importantly for Intel: AMD aren't making anything better.

        • +1

OK, 20% can be considered significant, I think. But is it GPU performance or CPU?

I didn't read much about mobile side. I heard the CPU improvement in Intel desktop CPUs is only marginal from 4th to 6th gen. They only improved GPU, which need to be an AMD/Nvidia dedicated one anyway if you really care.

Yes, AMD can't compete with Intel in CPUs at all. That explains why Intel does not improve their CPUs.

MS Black Friday deal for similar spec'd Dell Inspiron 15 Signature (correct me if I'm wrong) but with a touchscreen was $51 more (delivered).

I guess it's not a bad price if you're in an extreme hurry for a laptop.

    • +1

Nice heads up. Any chance that particular MS Black Friday deal will be repeated in the post-Christmas sales? Sorry, guess that's a crystal ball gazing question

      • Sorry, no idea. Keep an eye out for it!

      • That particular laptop has been on sale 3 time so far so def worth watching.

  • Laptop looks big? Is it heavy? In the market for a new lappy for the wife so cant be massive

    • 2.19kg

    • +13

Same deal here, I need a new wife for the lappy, but can't be too heavy if you know what I mean. :)

      • Oh dear … remember what they say about being careful what you wish for … See what Santa brings.

      • Wife for the lappy?

      • The wife is meant to sit on your lappy if you know what I mean. ( ͡º ͜ʖ ͡º)

Generally if you want light weight you need to move to a 13 inch or there about screen and drop the DVD drive.

      • Scanning down the previoys comments leaves yours with another meaning; just saying … oops!

  • Looks ok, but hoping similar deals will be out after xmas.

I have owned a HP laptop and had a broken hinge after a couple of years. Did a search and it seems that HP had a laptop recall back in 2009 for defective hinges. I bought mine in 2011 but I guess HP laptops are not as robust as Dell. I have owned 3 different Dell laptops and have never had issues with hinges.

    • +2

I had bad experience with a HP laptop as well- oose hinge, overheating, loud noise. A friend had the same issues. Never buying HP again.

      • The fan on my hp went to shit too. Custom laptops all the way!

      • Having hp envy 6-1010tu goo in speed but strange keyboard setting, now using clips to hold the hinges after two years. Call customer services, repair will cost $150 for just checking plus whatever for the hinges cost.

Owned a HP For about 7 years and even though it's been treated like shit it's still going strong after all this time :) Hit and miss like every product

    • Son's 2008 HP Presario laptop (well travelled and several users) still going well, hinges included. Fan was replaced last year and only now having a major overhaul, following a nasty virus attack. Worst thing that happened to it though was as a result of one fussy Mum vacuuming the keys … yes, twice. This one will be retained as a spare once son gets a jiggle on and finally buys another.

The generations of CPU should not matter all that much unless you really need some thing to crunch graphics which then you should be looking for a different laptop! once you get into ULV cpu the performance differences are gone!

    resolution 1366x768… its 2016 already !!!!

    • WOW that totally sucks. Sneaky how they don't mention it in the specs.

    • Yeah, not really a bargain with a crappy display like that.

    • +1

Tell the Manufacturers, Prob over 70% of comps have that resolution, although I have that reso on my comp and it looks perfectly fine

      • We had look at a similar priced 15" HP model tonight at JB HiFi. Resolution (same) looked quite fine; no issues that we could see. I actually preferred the look and feel of the HP over a DELL.

I hope we start seeing more SSDs too…

For those who know laptops a little better how does this compare to this?

128Gb SSD. "we're gonna need a bigger boat"

    • I don't know them any better than thou but I can only wonder why only 4 GB RAM. Other than that it's a tad smaller but much lighter. Tempting much.

  • With the buy $300 plus get $50 payback before 8am 26/12/15, does it mean this notebook can now be had for $599? Not a bad price for the specs.

    • Just what I was reading too! Wonder what the difference is between this model and the (apparently) same one at Dick Smith's advertised as $699; where assistant said he could offer as low as $679. Intel5 too.

  • +1

I was just at DS' Chatswood chase store (just got chucked out - closing early they said). The $699 one has a i5-5200u cpu that is newer and faster, compared to TGG's i5-4210u.

See a pretty good review here: http://www.ultrabookreview.com/6146-intel-core-i5-5200u/

    • Thank you for your comment. (Personally I like the smooth texture feel of these two HP laptops over the other brands too. ) Very informative link too!

      • +1

You are welcome. I will actually taking into consideration also the Dell Inspiron 15 Signature Edition Laptop $699 at Microsoft Store:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/227265

It has a HD touch screen.

Of course there is also the Zenbook at $699 from Shopping Express, but that might not be as "available".

Depending on what you are using the notebook for, there are plenty of decently priced units around now.

        • Gave my son $1000 to buy himself a new laptop/notebook for his 21st a few weeks ago. Seems to me that he is in no hurry though and prefers money in the bank! He had just decided to put a new hard drive in his old hp last week too though. I'm the one doing all the looking around etc. He does use a few software programs like Vegas Movie Studio Platinum and Adobe Photoshop (bought those for hom last year as he likes to make YouTube parodies and such). The old unit is 8 years old and a slightly bigger size, although it appears heavier also.

There certainly is an awful lot of similar priced units about. I am glad I would not be the one making a decision, but I still believe in doing a few comparisons. It is interesting reading all the debating going on in here, but much of it is beyond my comprehension.
