MSTAR processor? Never heard of these guys before.

    • It's been used in a few boxes like the ZIDOO X9. It focuses more on media playback than power like the RK3368 does in comparison to the RK3288

      • Does anybody know what the subtitle support is like? Can you change colour, size, position? My Astone media box is starting to play up and I'm looking for a replacement. This Pavo M9 seems like a pretty capable gadget.

        • +1

Subtitles would depend on the app being used to play the media.

        • @Clear: Thanks, I didn't realise it would have different apps for different things. I thought it might come with its own Android skin which would affect the remote control/subtitles/playback, and have no experience with Android other than with a touch screen or mouse. Watching a couple of the videos on the product page helps, but still can't find anything regarding subtitles.

        • +1

@greenie4242: Usually you load a subtitle file in an app like MX Player. There are other apps like GMT Subtitles and Subloader that will add subtitles to videos automatically. I'm not sure how good they are as I've never used them.

        • +3

install Kodi and everything works - I'm hoping its the same as most other android boxes. Kodi is way better than any other software player out there. Subtitles works great and way better than the way it did on the astone.

  • Bought the Tronsmart Orion R68/R68 Pro 64bit from previous deal. Box works ok but there has been no OTA update since then, I think they have abandoned all those people who were in the first batch that received the 100M ethernet instead of the gigabit version. The gigabit version has received updates.

    • Weird. I have the R68 Pro 100M and received several OTA updates long after it went on sale.

  • +1

no more tronsmart for me. bought the tv box a few months ago, netflix doesnt work. crappy instructions for os update. there's a brick in my drawer now

    • +2

Is that the Orion R68? An OTA update was released that fixed the Netflix issues.

  • Hdmi recording? So can i plug in say chromecast, send netflix to it & record that?

    • I'm fairly certain it does, but I'll find out.

    • If you want to record Netflix, check out PlayOn for Windows. It has blown my mind.

    • +3

Geekbuying have just tested it and confirmed that it works!

    • +2

I hope that's only for personal use and only while you have an active subscription.

If it was Foxtel I wouldn't care one bit but unlike those greedy buggers Netflix gave us everything we asked for. They deserve their success and to not have their content pirated, unlike pretty much everyone else.

      • +2

some people watch on the train and don't want to blow their mobile data cap for streaming Netflix on mobile. so it's not about depriving Netflix because you already pay the subscription it's about being able to watch where you want.

      • -4

get your hand off it, or you might fall off that high horse of yours & get hurt.
There's this dude born almost 2016 years ago who was quoted (John (8:7) saying "..Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.."

But if your pockets are as deep as your horse is high, then I'll be happy for you to sponsor me a 10Gb/mth mobile data plan so I can watch Netflix when PT'ing to work. Or even better send your wifi enabled limo around to fetch me each morning.

        • Personal use with an active subscription so imo there's nothing wrong with that and I doubt Netflix would have much of a problem with it either.

You ARE doing your part to thank Netflix for single-handedly taking us from the entertainment dark ages into the future as well as making the aholes at Foxtel that little bit sadder - thank you.

My point was just don't distribute it to others (and if you want to be really good deleting it if you ever cancel your subscription).

  • I am also not happy with Tronsmart android tv box. Netflix doesn't work well and abc kids keeps crashing. No updates since purchase.

    • +1

Orion R68? An OTA was released that fixed Netflix and it's available for sideloading here

  • I did this update manually but Netflix is not smooth. Sometime class clicking previous screen, it quits out of Netflix. Also the box starts itself despite pressing off button from back and power off button from remote.
Saying that other apps like gmail and news apps works well.

  • Just got myself a minix u1 would this be good for another room as cheaper than one i got does it come with au plug?

    • It'll likely be a US plug with an AU adapter. Travel adapters or power strips with multiple types are better suited.

  • Bought this on Monday with a $10 promo discount :

    http://m.geekbuying.com/item/Tronsmart-Vega-S95-Meta-Amlogic…

It cost me US$70… It's a newest processor from Amlogic and 2GB RAM… Should receive it before Xmas through TNT.

Expensive than what OP has posted but should run much smoother.

    • Cheers I might wait for those to drop again to under $au100/$us70
I'll be keen to hear how your unit performs

  • Any chance of an S805 based TV Box and or the Beelink X2 being put on sale? They are available for approx $31US elsewhere but I'd prefer to buy from someone active on ozbargain if a similar price can be reached.

  • HDMI record?? H.265? Man, I'm sold

    • I just noticed the specs don't include DTS, so it might not be as good as I was hoping. Everything else looks good though.

EDIT: Some of the specs list DTS, others don't. It would seem to include it in the hardware.

      • +1

but don't you just install Kodi and DTS works? Anyway, bought with TNT shipping for free. cant wait to test this out

  • Is there any box yet that can play 1080p hi10p?

    • +1

think you may need an high spec intel NUC for that.

      • Yeah. Waiting for the day that I can retire my WDTV :(

        • There is actually a device that can but quite expensive. That's the nvidia shield TV or iPad air 2.

        • @dtnvong:

          Thanks, man.
I've got an ipad air 2. It plays them with dropouts (using Infuse). Any other player suggestions? Still looking for a standalone, but for the very occasional anime I won't bother paying so much over my WDTV.

          Thanks

        • +1

@Morien: for iPad nplayer is the best. It's expensive compared to other apps but I assure you it's the best out there and well worth the money. Even supports samba shares and chrome cast too

        • @dtnvong: Will look into it. Thanks, bud

        • @dtnvong:
          No, Kodi better than anything.

        • @PainToad: for simplicity nplayer is best seeing its available on the App Store. Kodi is great too just that you need to jailbreak and the touch interface sucks in my opinion.

    • +1

There doesn't seem to be any ARM CPUs that are capable of doing 1080p hi10p currently.

      • Damn. Well, they seem to do 720p now. Maybe in another year they'll handle 1080. Thanks!

  • Does anyone know if this thing can record gaming at 60fps?

  • I just bought two, can't wait to try them out. Thanks @Clear!

I tried the coupon with the Air Mouse bundle but it didn't work:
    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Tronsmart-Pavo-M9-4K-TV-BOX-A…

I probably should have asked before ordering, but wonder if there are some specials for the Air Mouse or bundle. I ordered anyway because I'm exhausted and need to go to bed now and didn't want to miss out on the deal, but it'd be nice to know for other people.

  • So what on offer here several boxes just the one are you guys saying one on this deal is crap and got a better one little bit confused also it was mentioned ordered before deal end when does it end

    • +2

It's not crap. I've managed to get a significant discount on it.

  • Is 1 GB RAM good enough to run 1080p or 4K movies from USB drives? I though minimum 2GB or more should be required… Any ideas?

    • +1

      1GB is enough. It'll run 1080p fine and most 4K formats like 4K H.264.

  • Surely this item must be crap at this price?

  • Im tempted for second lounge and bedroom nut i read this:

The program installed is out of date and will not work out of the box. In order to use this, you will need to update it with the new version. I can not stress that enough, if you do not know how to program it, buy another box with the up to date program and a years worth of technical support.

    • What program?

  • +3

Review up on my site if anyone's interested in benchmarks, etc. Hardware is essentially the same as the Zidoo X9.

  • This is even cheaper today, at AU$57.41. I could have saved $14 the other day. Oh well, it was sent out on Friday, so I'll hopefully get it mid-week and be able to play with it over the Christmas break. Remember to use Cashrewards too!

  • does this av mean composite video + audio ? tq

    • Yes, but this box only has HDMI. An adapter should work though.

      • can please help, what kind of av rca cable to be use? I found that there are different kind of rca TRRS with different ground.

        • Hi @a123my - I just tried five different cables from my junk box and eventually found one that worked. I also included all measurements, as it's a different length to the standard TRRS plug. The one that works is:

Tronsmart Pavo M9 AV RCA Cable pinout:
          3.5mm diameter TRRS plug
17.5mm long with 0.5mm between each ring
          T Video 5mm
          R Left 2.5mm
          R Right 2.5mm
          S Ground 5.5mm

It seems to have a much longer tip than all the other cables I tried. The tip is about 17.5mm long, but all my other cables are about 14.5mm long, same length as standard headphone plugs. It goes in all the way.

Some of the cables I had used a different ground, different tip, or had the ground only connected to one audio jack, so video would only work if the right audio plug was inserted. This could be an issue if you have the video going direct to your TV and the audio going to a separate amplifier, so keep it in mind. No idea where this cable came from, probably from an old camcorder or something.

        • +1

@a1234my: The plug is so unusual I took a photo of it alongside a standard headphone plug and a common TRRS plug:

          http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/23340/36283/17.5mm_trrs…

        • @greenie4242: Thanks….. saw that the ground is longer then the normal TRRS,

        • unable to find any extra long TRRS cable - any idea where can get it ?

  • code expired? not usable

    • Yes it has. There is a new promotion where you buy one get one free.

      • What's the new promotion codes? Planning on buying again as a gift

        • +1

There is no promotion code. You'll notice just above the quantity it has a tickbox mentioning a free one.

        • @Clear: oh wow! Thanks!

  • +1

    Received mine. Thanks OP.

For the price I paid cannot be happier. It records HDMI. Comes with custom Kodi because of special non standard acceleration. You cannot install a newer Kodi as it won't use the hw accel. 10bit stuff plays with only sound unless you force software decode.

Few cons, but a great device. Lots of video modes too.

    • @dtnvong - Mine arrived Monday at 1pm, less than four days after ordering - pretty good considering I've been waiting for stuff I ordered from Sydney two weeks ago to arrive!

The included remote is almost worthless until the box is set up properly. You can't even install or play YouTube without logging in with a Google account, so I definitely reckon you need to hook up a USB keyboard and mouse at least for intial set-up. After it's set up, Kodi works well.

Can you please expand upon the Kodi/HW acceleration issue? I can't find anything about it online. What older version would I need to find to make use of the hardware? I hit update on both the player firmware and Kodi without realising it may be detrimental. I bought two of these, one still unopened, so if the included version is better I can back it up and downgrade the other one easily. Google have a habit of removing features or completely breaking their apps, so I usually use Titanium Backup to keep every old version just in case, but figured that Kodi, being third-party, would continually improve. Maybe I was mistaken. I can't check it now as it's already wrapped up under the Christmas tree.

The YouTube app is almost completely broken, which seems to be a deliberate move by Google. Google seems to have done an update to YouTube TV last week which broke all Android TV support so it doesn't work with the remote, and if you try to update it says "Not supported by your device." It's confusing because there seem to be three different YouTube apps, none of which are installed out of the box (or maybe they are, but they were removed by the firmware update.) One is for Google TV, one for Android TV, one for Android Mobile. The version the player directs you to install will not install. The other only works when I install an older version which doesn't have very good remote control support, and the YouTube app only plays a windowed version of videos, requiring a mouse to play full-screen and select different video. Luckily the Kodi plugin seems to work OK for my needs, though it is a bit broken.

      • +1

It requires a special build of Kodi for HW acceleration. By default it is already installed, even if you were to update it from the App Store it won't update and will still contue to work as it was out of the box. I've installed spmc as well and made it default to sw rendering. That way I can play with 10bit stuff without always changing the settings.

The build is also rooted out of the box so titanium would work great if you want.

Very happy with this box. The build isn't that buggy and seems stable. No major crashes at all, even on record using mp4 in which it records in 2gb chunks - no real noticeable time skips between record segments too.. Crashed in TS format because the record file was over 4gb.

Netflix is also full hd, unlike a lot of other china android boxes

        • +2

I'm glad it's turned out well for you. I've gone and got one now thanks

        • +1

@Clear: I think you would be quite happy with the unit. I've played with heaps of them before and this is my favourite. Extremely good value because of the power supply that allows for hdd support via usb. Thanks for the coupon :)

  • Code has expired. Wasted my time signing up.

    • +1

Deal was expired on the 26th Dec..you're a bit late.

      • +1

        O_o must be going blind

        • +1

I can probably get a new coupon. No promises though.

        • @Clear: if you do, would be great
