My mother is looking to make some magnetic business cards and I saw 40% off site wide advertised on VistaPrint website.

Looks good and reviews are good for this.

  • Off full-priced items. Like the Christmas Stockings are 60% off or so, so the coupon doesn't work on them

    • It works on discounted products as well.

      • Tried it? Because I did and it didn't discount them further, hence my comment

Nice deal, if it matters to you, VistaPrint.COM.AU invoice you from the Netherlands, so it's likely another large foreign company which does all it can to avoid paying taxes in Australia. Here is who you are actually doing business with:

    Vistaprint B.V.
    Hudsonweg 8
    5928 LW Venlo
    The Netherlands

If you want to support businesses actually based in Australia paying tax to support the country, maybe try a different supplier.

I recently purchased some of these, I paid GST on them and they were printed in Australia. It's very easy to get cheap things printed in China and shipped over, this is vastly better since they're creating jobs here and contributing to the GST.

From a corporate tax perspective, it's far more complicated than simply being a foreign company. They still need to pay tax on Australian income (and would get a credit back in the Netherlands for it), what you read about in the news is where they do dodgy crap in order to shift profits from one country to another (royalties, licensing agreements, things with no tangible value). However if they were out to cheat on tax they should pick another country - the Netherlands has a tax rate of 25%.

      • What you say is correct, that corporate tax is complex. However normally a business with operations as large as Vistaprint in Australia would invoice you from their Australian operations. The fact their invoices come from the Netherlands, yet the product comes from their Australian operation would indicate the majority of the profits are booked in the Netherlands while the costs are incurred in Australia.

Vistaprint used to be based on Paris, however in 2009 moved their domicile to the Netherlands, which is known to provide sweat heart tax deals to companies that base themselves there (similar to Ireland and Singapore). Refer to the famous case of Starbucks, their UK operatings are headquartered in the Netherlands and not once in 10 years did they book a profit in the UK.

It would be interesting to know how much of their Australian profits are booked in Australia versus the Netherlands.

        • Yes it's Dutch, but they simply sub-contract printing companies here (at stupidly low rates who are obviously desperate for business) to do the work for them!
Many years ago you would sometimes receive products shipped from the Netherlands.

I can at least confirm they employ some Aussies, t-shirts printed from them appear to be done in Werribee and they ship FAST.

  • I used to love these guys, got my first t-shirts printed there (my own custom designs, cause I'm pedantic) but man the actual quality of the shirts…. yeah nah - I loved em at first but the redbubble shirts are vastly better quality.

Dunno about the vistaprint document quality though, I believe it's much better.
