  • I saw some stainless steel ones from HOUSE. Are they safer than aluminium?

    • they are exactly the same from a safety point of view… anyway if you like this kind of coffee, bialetti is the best brand. Also IMO coffee is better with alu

I wouldn't buy aluminium for anything food related as it may have a potential health effect.
Effect of citric acid and maltol on the accumulation of aluminum in rat brain and bone.
On the other hand steel is edible, so that's fine - unless the alloy composition makes it toxic :)

We have had the Bialetti aluminium version for many years and 50 years on I'm stil alive. I bought 2 last time Myer had their sale. They have a version with a stainless steel bottom and aluminium top. This is for use with induction burners. Note the aluminium will not work with induction.

You may consider buying Lavazza/Vittoria coffee and a Vespa for authentic Italian experience. Perhaps listem to Pavarotti also.

      Espresso anyone?

Love making my morning espresso in one of these (just made one). Mine I got 2nd hand for $4.50. As far as I can tell from coffee lover forums this is definitely the brand to go for if you're interested in making coffee this way.

  • Il modo migliore per l'espresso! I have an unbranded aluminum that makes wonderful coffee. For some reason the two latest bialetti I bought didn't work that well…espresso is the only proper coffee for me Italian, however it's not everyone's cup of tea…

My nonna swears by this brand. Definitely makes good espresso. Ciao!

      • Nonna is always right :)

        • disagree and she'll cut your balls off

  • Good price!
If you got gas stove would be nice because the quick heat, electric one takes a bit of time to heat up

  • Picked up an 18 cup from Myer for $98, was $140. Got some Merlo coffee grinded and tastes great the coffee done this way. Worth the purchase.

  • In store as well?

  • Done, nice one OP!

As Ironman once said - "Long after the excesses of the coffee pod days are over the humble percolators will still remain."

  • Vote up because it might encourage someone to stop using crappy pods and make some decent coffee ;) Me personally I prefer my Aeropress, but when I desire a nice good strong coffee can't go past a Moka pot.

  • I've got one of these and I've never known how to use it properly. I know the coffee goes in its container and water goes in the bottom but how do you know when it's all turned to steam and made its way to the top container? Baffles me.

    • If you a new to it (like me), just have the top lid open and you can watch the coffee oozing out of at the top. At first the flow is strong and the water is dark. The flow rate gradually reduce and til you see it mostly bubbly (like beer froth). Turn the stove off at this point. Thats it. Now if the kitchen is quiet, you can hear the sound of steam pushing through the side valve when its done, quite similar to the old kettle

Don't have the stove on high heat to quicken the process, will give the coffee a burnt smell (unless you prefer it).

    • i have a bialetti 4 cup. Use it every morning, twice on weekends. Absolutely love it.
      Tips:
Don't overfill it with water - it will overflow all over the stove when it boils!
Don't fill up the coffee container to overflowing or compact the coffee, this will cause the top section of the pot to heat up excessively and when your water finally makes it up through the grounds it will boil in the top section and again make a mess of your stove (we call this vesuvius due to the resemblance of a "coffee volcanic eruption").
Try and keep the rim of the coffee container part clear of grounds (grinds?), you get a better seal and less chance of leaks (once again, the clean stove factor)
Use freshly ground coffee beans, nothing wets your coffee desire like the smell of freshly ground beans!!!

      Enjoy ;-)

ps. I hate cleaning the stove ;-))))
