good pickup.. was thinking it was a bargain!
Yeah, 24 ports sharing 100Mbps. Think how fast you'll transfer notepad text documents…
hmm not sure it works like that. hubs share bandwidth, switches create virtual circuits. feel free to correct me on that though…
4.8Gbit/s backplane. Does no one read the specs these days?
If your uplink to the rest of your network is only 100Mbps, then there's the bottleneck - 23 other devices, even running asynchronous 100 up + down are still trying to squeeze through 100Mbps. But no backplane and buffer on a $45 devices will handle that traffic anyway.
@thebargainhunter:
i think for home use it would be fine. run your cable/adsl router into it and then have 24 ports for everything at home. not many people have internet faster than 100mbps.if you're hooking this up to an existing office network, you're not good at your job
Who needs 24 ports at home!
@pitufon: me.
i've filled two 8 port gig switches. i only use wireless for mobile devices, everything else is hard wired in (as it should be!)
@ideasman:
The only thing is, do you need 24 ports in one room?
I've filled two 8 port gig switches as well, but they're in different rooms.@legiong:
ah i see. yeah mine are in a central location and everything runs back to them.@ideasman:
Fair enough. My router is in a sort of central location, with 1 switch next to it and a second switch in another room.And I totally agree everything should be hard wired unless portable.
I was taught the basic way to think of it is routers share the bandwidth with all ports, so 100mbit / 24, whereas switches have that much bandwidth on each port, so 100mbit x 24.
Not completely accurate but good enough for us amateurs.
Wait for another $10 delivered bargain on the 8 port Soniq Gigabit switch and get four if you need that many ports.
i will only get 1Gbps for sharing my word documents! I don't have nanoseconds to waste!! Time is money!!
I picked this 16-port gigabit switch up for $83 a while back. Very happy with it. Not sure if it's the best bargain around, but might help someone out there looking for something similar.
i've had good experiences with that model, too
Not Gigabit.. so no for me. THanks
Certainly not saying you would use it in a corporate environment, but would be good in a home network.
Just get a second hand baystack or something if you want a 100 Mbit switch. You can't even give them away these days.
can't even give them away these days
Especially, in a home environment where transfers are be mainly media files. Waste of time.
I bought one of these a while back (same price) as a backup in the event my 16 port gigabit HP switch (which back then you could get for $99) has an issue..
Unless you're transferring a lot of data between computers 10/100 is not too bad (granted its not perfect) so I'd be inclined to suggest this as a backup switch when your higher-end switch gives up the ghost for whatever reason and you're waiting for a replacement…
Not PoE? :S
The good thing about HP Networking gear is the Limited Lifetime Warranty. As long as you're the original end-user and can provide proof of purchase (if asked), you get a Next Business Day response time for any and all issues and usually HP are quite happy to give H/W replacement on the spot. You should also get 24/7 stand-by technical support via web or phone in the first 3 years of life (though that may vary).
$30 delivered at FUTU ebay shop.

Not a bad price for 100Mbit, I am happy with my Procurve 1800 24G, has been faultless for a number of years.
Not a bad idea as a backup or just to get the house hooked up.
note: this is 10/100 not gigabit
