    1000+ on a Windows Phone? Yeah… Nahhhhh

    • +1 LMAO

      • go home microsoft, you're drunk

        you're not apple

    • +4

will be worth such money when they properly emulate Android and Apple apps, but until then… just no

  • +6

I am not sure that such prices are the best way for Microsoft to gain market share.

  • +2

Yeah $549 for the similar spec G4. The 950 has an iris scanner, but according to reviews it's slower than typing a pin.

I guess this phone is only for Windows fans.

    200GB microsd is around $150 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/221492

    • Well, my bad.

  • Afaik there is only one 200gb micro SD available, the one you have linked.

  • Think i will be using my lumia 640 for a while longer like windows phonesbut dont buy expensive phones generally

And my andoid phone i cant turn off delete the preinstalled apps otherwise google cant mine my data root the phone no more ota android updates

  • These handsets will be under $500 in 6 months. Just like the massive price drop my Lumia 930 experienced.
I really liked MS phone, but have recently defected after 5 years of Windows Phones and giving up as they are too late unfortunately.

You're going to need the 200GB microSD if taking photos with a 20MP camera.

    • Why the neg?

I have about 20GB of photo and video on my 625 which is 5MP with 2MB photos. The file size of each photo will be 4x more. If this captures RAW then you're looking at 60+MB per image.
Not to mention the video. 2160p @ 30fps = 360MB/min or 20GB for an hour video!

Wow that's crazy. I'm not sure if they've learnt their lesson from the Lumia 1520 yet. Yes as a phone these are amazing phones. Fluid, great camera, micro sd card, plus all the microsoft goodies like continuum (come on everyone has a pc somewhere (at work or home)), iris scanner is suprisingly fast (check out windows central video review on lumia 950).

But nowadays, a phone isn't a smartphone without the proper app ecosystem. Iphone costs you an arm and a leg for basically the privilege to access a very well made app store. I've always been in android (note edge now), and even I have to admit the itunes store is on another level. Instagram has been on perpetual beta, some apps have not been updated since years ago, missing a whole load of apps the general public uses. Sure if you don't use any apps you should be fine, but for the general public, that's not on.

Sure windows 10 will change this and hopefully more devs develop, but this will take some time. I think microsoft should've started with a mid range device at a cheaper price point. Once they can show there are more apps in the store (useful ones, not flashlights…), then they can start to command a higher and more premium devices. Until then, the 950/950XL will only be for the hardcore fans. Just goes to show that you really shouldn't be buying 'new' things; you're just an experiment (me included with my note edge).

    • Note Edge isnt that bad (I love mine) - but yes, the Continuum is where the biggest market differentiation is for the Lumia 950/XL. It is a bit "rich" so to speak being over $1000. But mind you, where can you find a current Flagship model these days for under this amount? (eg. Galaxy S6/Note5, iPhone 6/6S, Sony Z5/Premium etc).

But you are right. I would place some good odds that this phone drop by 1/3 within 3 months to more reasonable levels.. I'll wait til then.. hehe

      • You can get phones like the nexus 6p for $744. And as I said in my earlier comment the G4 was $549. Samsung and Apple can get away with selling their phones at these prices because they pretty much own the market already, and even Samsung struggle to get these kind of prices for their phones outright. I imagine though these Lumia's will depreciate fast and become cheap soon enough.

        • You're quoting Grey stock with your prices considering Local stock (G4 - @$800, N6P - @$960) vs Grey stock (G4 - @$560, N6P - @$780) here. These are definitely comparable to those LOCAL prices of Lumia 950/XL ($1000/$1100), Sony Z5 ($1000), Galaxy S6 ($1000), Note 5 ($1150), iPhone 6s ($1100), 6S+ ($1300).

As you can see.. the "Flagships" are hitting the $1000 on the regular price +/- $100 with the exception of maybe the G4 and the HTC M9, which are around 9 months old and waning with the prices and that LG/HTC arent exactly the biggest sellers out there.

Pretty much all models will drop in price after 6 months in the shape of various discounts..

        • @bchliu:

Actually I'm comparing local stock. Not GREY IMPORTS!.

Obviously you aren't a very good ozbargainer. Those prices came from deals posted here.

Also 6p is brand new phone. It's not hard to find better prices for local stock. This is ozbargain not ozpayrrp.

  • still waiting for absolute confirmation whether australia will get the dual sim version (US and canada did in the end!).

    • Highly doubt it. Why? the Second SIM only works with 2G/GPRS and 2G/GPRS is about to be disconnected in 2017.

      • the Second SIM only works with 2G/GPRS

that's what people have said, but i'm not sure that is (entirely) true.

        comment on whirlpool:

"It's definately DSDS dual sim dual standby. the MS HK store has it in the product description. Pretty sure the switching between radios is done in the software. From what I can gather, 1 sim will be on 3G/4G and the other will be on 2G on standby. However user can change which sim can use 3G/4G radio via software. the 640XL dual sim works in this fashion."

but yes, we probably won't get dual sim anyway…so most likely dual import is the way to go for dual sim!

        • That comment is true - and its the same with the Dual SIM phones from China as well. The Software allows you to select which one of the SIM's you'd like for Data running at whatever is the highest data rate for it. The other card though - still runs in 2G mode regardless. Hence once you shut the 2G network down, the other SIM will not work and is very much worthless.

        • @bchliu:

Hence once you shut the 2G network down, the other SIM will not work and is very much worthless.

well, if you can switch between the two, it's not worthless - as long as it can switch between sims (without switching the phone off and physically removing the sim), that's fine by me!

sure, being able to use both sims at the same time (eg. one for calls, one for data) would be nice. but my use case is really just having a second sim as a backup to switch to, so i don't need them both to be active.

      • -1

It does not work on 2G, so many misconceptions!

  • My prediction is that this phone will be around half this price within 3 months. That's what I mean by depreciating fast. Most phones lose around 1/3rd their value within 6 months.

  • I feel Continuum is a marketing gimmick and way to basic/limited in it's current stage and no doubt still in 2yrs to come. Screen casting/MiraCast (or even hdmi) on Android beats it in it's entirety with full performance and operating/features. I was hoping Linux phone had made waves inwards on this area but not to be.

  • Just saw Harvey Norman having a bonus gift weekend of 10% in gift card if you order by tomorrow. Terms and conditions say nothing about excluding pre order. Going to check this out tomorrow
