Thanks, I've been using PIA for years too and have never had a single problem.

My subscription was due in two days, so I cancelled it and signed up using this offer.

    • +1

you can talk to the rep and they'll add your remaining time, at least they have done that in the past, but its only 2 days, but for anyone else that has more and wants to use this offer to extend.

      • Thanks I just re-upped a month ago.

      • They have never done that for me, even when I have had a couple of months left on a 12-month subscription (and I have asked).

      • I'm talking to rep right now and he said they've never done it and not even able to do it, the best they can do is to refund account if it is refundable (which is only within 7 days of subscription)

        • they did it for me a few years back, so guess they changed their policy.

      • Just tried the online chat and have been told they won't credit me or add the remaining time if I re-subscribe. I have 180 days of subscription left. :(

  • +6

thanks, purchased from the android app using the ridiculous amount of telstra credit that keeps piling up so technically that makes this free for me :-) installed & running fine on my SP3 as well.

    cost $41.50(ish)

    • -1

      Good idea.

    • Telstra credit? How does this work? I'm actually looking for a new mobile provider right now, so this could help my decision :)

      • +2

with telstra pre-paid you can use your credit to buy stuff from google play. ie. I'm on "freedom", a $30 recharge gets me $700 of calls & texts over 28 days (which i never get close to using) and I can then spend the $30 recharge amount on movies, music, games, apps/IAP's from the play store. the credit keeps rolling over as long as you recharge before it expires. It's just a shame more apps don't let you subscribe via google. Some good uses include Office 365, Pandora One, Dropbox, Google Play Music, TomTom… and ebooks.

this explains how to do it:
        https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/google-play

        • Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, when you recharge with $30, you get your normal allowances (calls, text, data) and then $30 to spend in the Play Store on top of this? So basically you're getting a subscription to Play Music, Dropbox, etc, every month for free?

It's never made sense to me. You can go on one of Telstra's postpaid SIM-only plans and get no Play Store credit and no rollover or you can go on pre-paid (with scheduled monthly recharge if you like) and get the same amount as your recharge to spend in the Play Store as well as rollover of unused data, credit? Really?

    • i'm trying to do the same but can't seem to work out how to buy it within the android app… do i need to be logged off?

    • How do you get the discounted price to appear within the Android app? I can only see the regular price…

      • I didn't have a previous account, when I signed up it took me to a payment page, I just selected "bill my telstra account" or whatever it says…

      • +1

It shows you the full price but if you click on buy you will be quoted the discounted price (AUD$41.48 per year)

        • Can confirm this, AUD$41.48. Thanks guys!

Can someone tell me if a vpn service can be installed on router?

    Thanks

    • +1

Yes it can, although you'll have to google to see if your hardware has the settings for it.

    • +2

      From PIA support pages, hope this helps;

Can I use the Private Internet Access service with my router?

You can use Private Internet Access with any router that supports consumer based VPN services. This would include OpenVPN, and PPTP. Some firmwares for routers that are known to support these are DD-WRT, Tomato as well as PfSense. Please remember that PrivateInternetAccess is not responsible for any issues that may arise when flashing a different ROM to your router. Please proceed with caution.

Here is a list of routers compatible with each of the firmware types.

      DD-WRT — http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

      Tomato — http://tomatousb.org/doc:build-types

      Pfsense* — http://www.pfsense.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=vie…

*Please note Pfsense is the most advanced of these possible set-ups, and should only be used by users familiar with the firmware.

      • +4

And if you have a suitably powered Asus router you also have the option of Merlin's - http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/ firmware as well.

      • Speeds will be slow on most consumer routers, probably ok for adsl but not for nbn, I have an ac68u and max speeds are 20-30mbit

        • Should be more like 50 Mbps on AC68U I believe.

        • @chyawala:

Unfortunately not.. Or maybe my settings are wrong, openvpn can't make use of both CPUs so only uses one aparrently

        • @happyantix: on a forum someone mentioned maybe only AES256CBC encryption is multi threaded. I'd try that.

    • With no disrespect inteneded, If you asked the question then the answer is most likely No you can't.
The reason is that generally only high end routers come with it built in.

The various firmwares which @trantor mentions are ones you install yourself (or if you buy them pre-installed from specialist suppliers). Hence my "if you have to ask…" line. One suggestion if you do decide to go down that path of installing firmware, I'd buy a cheap (I got a cheap $20 dlink router) and try it on that, this way if it all goes brown, you can still use your existing router.

One more thing, using a VPN on your router, you lose any Quota free traffic your ISP offers (such as Netflix), unless you're clever enough to setup split tunnel.

      • just trying to help, not something i'd do lol. But thanks for the further info :)

        • +2

Oh sorry @Trantor, I wasn't critising, just expanding on what you said.
I would expect anyone who has installed any of those firmwares would know enough to know or check if they had VPN capabilities on their router.

  • Fast enough to stream netflix hd? Heard very mixed reports on PIA especially padt 6 months.

    • +2

Been watching netflix for about a year. No problems.

      • Out of interest, what sort of speeds do you get vs. your normal internet speed? I'm with Torguard at the moment and my line speed generally max's out at about 2 Mbits when I'm on VPN, even though I'm on the NBN.

What's everyone else's experience with PIA's speed vs. 'normal' maximum line speed?

        • +1

Very good in my experience — I don't even notice it.

Just logged 60/1.5 on speedtest.net with Optus cable and their Melbourne server.

        • @AngryNil: That's a pretty decent speed. Thanks for the heads up!

        • @AngryNil: Thanks again for the info mate. I joined up. And just for a bit of feedback for others, I managed to get 13/12.5 on the HK server and 38/29 on the Sydney server. That's more than enough for me. Certainly beats the measly 2Mbits I was getting before.

        • @ozkiwi75:

So VPN will make my connection slower or faster? Sorry new to this

        • +1

@Twisty: Slower, because it adds another layer to your connection. But the amount it slows down by really depends on the service provider. For example on my NBN connection I can get over 90Mbits download speeds without VPN. But with Torguard VPN switched on I was struggling to get anything over 2Mbit speeds. Whereas with PIA I am now getting almost 40Mbits. For me, speed is more important, so I made the switch over to PIA.

        • @ozkiwi75: tried PIA and not even breaking 3 Mbps. So slow. Troubleshooting numerous configurations with tech support, ports etc but still slow on all hardware.

I wanted an increase and top VPN speed, however this is only a fraction of the speed of others I've tried. Hope to sort it out.

Worth noting too that the openvpn config files are not complete like others providers, and cannot be uploaded ready to go.

        • @chyawala: That's weird, I just downloaded an installation file from PIA and a couple of clicks later was enjoying a decent speed VPN connection with no DNS leaks.

Which server are you using? In theory, the Australian ones should be the fastest. Perhaps check one of those first. And remember it also depends on your normal internet speeds without the VPN on.

    • +2

Use a 'Smart DNS' service instead if you just want Netflix access - costs less and no lag.

      • Yeah i have Getflix already. I just signed up for Telstra Cable and stumbled onto a whirlpool thread with a lot of people having issues streaming above low quality SD for Netflix USA yet speeds for everything else fine. So just thinking of options to get around that if i need to.

        • +1

I get HD quality on Telstra cable with Getflix and Netflix US about 99% of the time.

  • Does this have smart DNS?

    • +1

      No, it's a VPN only.

  • Looking for an option to try netflix us, I have an australian account, but someone mentioned if I get a VPN or equialent it automatically opens up much more content even with the australian account, ie they are one and the same.

In terms of one option, someone mentioned just get HOLA in Chrome and then sign into Netflix through Chrome, but I then read that that's not recommended as HOLA do something dodgy now which could attract unwanted attention?

    • +3

HOLA (free) use your connection as an exit node for others looking up dodgy stuff, so don't use that.

If you only want it for Netflix, try a 'Smart DNS' service like AdFreeTime. Way cheaper and no lag.

      • Way cheaper and no lag

"lag" doesn't affect video streaming. I assume you mean it won't slow down your download speed?

        • Sorry.. In terms of you don't have to wait for your VPN to relay the video to you. Less 'buffering' then?

    • +1

As mentioned, if all you're after is region switching for Netflix, then a Smart DNS service will do you.

There are a few out there, but I personally use Getflix. Lot's of options, setup is simple, and they have an app to manage your account and change regions etc, so you can change regions with ease from the couch.

  • This or PureVPN? Both have Black Friday deals running atm.

    • +2

If you're wanting to use OpenVPN, then this. If you don't mind PPTP, then PureVPN.

I have subscriptions to both, and one big difference is that with PIA their own application uses OpenVPN. As a result, you can be damn sure that the OpenVPN performance is something being watched. In contrast, PureVPN uses PPTP by default in their client application (which is higher performance but less secure). There have been several occasions where the performance of the OpenVPN endpoints of PureVPN have been quite poor for me.

Having said that, I have also had the experience on occasion where a PIA OpenVPN endpoint has been slower than a PureVPN one at the same location. Typically, though, a 'slow' PureVPN OpenVPN endpoint has been 0.25Mbps or less, whereas a 'slow' PIA one has been 1.5Mbps or so.

If all you want to do is watch streaming media from Hulu, etc. then I suggest the Getflix subscription.

  • Havent used this for a few months. Cant remember but do they allow use of bit torrent?

    • I am not with them but I would almost guarantee the answer is yes but only from certain servers / countries.

It seems most of the big boys (Torguard do as I am with them at the moment) allow but only from set places.

    • Yes they definitely do.

    • The answer, as @jollster101 expected, is yes but only from certain servers / countries.
They also support port forwarding in those locations which can be advantageous for torrenting those Linux ISOs.

    • PIA also offer a complimentary Proxy5 server (based in the netherlands) as an extra line of security for Torrent users.

      • Might give it a whirl as the complimentary Proxy5 is something i was looking for along with a vpn…

      • +2

Really its the only line of security, a VPN alone (at least PIA) doesn't hide your IP.

You can test it at https://ipleak.net/ i was curious about how well a VPN would protect peoples identity on bittorrent and was surprised to find it doesnt.

The other benefit is, i guess you can use the proxy in Torrent and not need the VPN active so it doesn't effect general surfing speeds.

Edit: Although after reading the post below pointing regarding https://torrentfreak.com/huge-security-flaw-can-expose-vpn-u… i tried again and it seems that might have fixed the issue i saw, although forcing all torrent traffic through the proxy server is a way to prevent any accidental exposed torrenting.

  • +1

I presume this is a for life offer assuming you would choose to stay with them?

    • +1

I checked out using PayPal, which set a recurring payment of $29USD every year, so yes, I assume it's for the lifetime you keep your subscription active.

      • That's good to know for those jumping.

I managed to get on the Torguard deal a couple of months back which was US $15 for 6 months for life. Its not much cash in the scheme of things but being able to run 6 monthly instead of yearly is a bonus.

  • Perfect, checked my account this morning and my renewal is due in 5 days time. I'll ask them if they can add this to my account.

  • +7

PIA is also on StackSocial — currently USD$60/2 Years. HOWEVER a little birdie told me that StackSocial is going to have a 15% off VPN (with coupon code VPN15, starting from 12AM PST time / 7PM AEDT today), which makes it USD$51/2 Years. Those who are happy with PIA might want to consider that :)

    • If I may ask, what VPN service (if any) do you use or prefer scotty?

      • I have both PureVPN & Getflix. PureVPN is quite good but I have no experience with other providers. Not a big user of VPN — just for watching overseas streaming content & network testing.

    • Oops. Just realised that PIA on StackSocial is "soldout".

    • It was 'sold out' but now available again!
Bought it with the coupon = US$51 for 2 years!!!! I still have 100 days left for my PIA to expire, but I'll cancel and apply this.

Does anyone know how long I've got to "Redeem Gift Card" from StackSocial? I was wondering if my new IPA subscription would start immediately or when I "redeemed" the gift card…

Edit: from StackSocial's FAQ: "All license codes and redemption links will expire after 60 days."

    • VPN15 has now expired, but BLACKFRIDAY works (15% off)

  • +6

Another bonus is you get 5 simultaneous logins with PIA.

  • +2

Yep, this company is awesome. Got them last year with all the noise, not one problem.

  • My current subscription is $39 US and will expire in 50 days, but looks like it's worth canceling it and buying new one for $29 as it will remain same price until I decide to cancel.

    • +2

I'm in a similar situation but just messaged their sales dept to check whether it would renew at $29. They told me that this price is for the first year only. After the first year it would revert back to their normal price - currently 39.95 so not worth the hassle.

  • With a VPN, if say friends/family come over and want to use the Wifi, do they need to log into the VPN as well as the Wifi?

    • No.

  • Does anyone know when this deal ends?

    • its not clear but at least for as long as early next week (Cyber monday)

  • +1

Bit deceptive, that. The "original price" is 12x 1mth subs. It's usually US$39.95/yr (and shows "52% off).
So really it's a 25% discount on usual price.

Having said that, they're a great VPN, I have a subs already. Recommended. :-)

  • Will give IPA a try later on, depends on how Torguard is for me.

  • I have a VPN but does anyone seriously think it helps with privacy/anonymity??

    • Yes, of course. With a decent VPN, it's impossible for a third party to see what you are doing on the internet unless the VPN provider tells them***

*** With the assumption that you don't reveal your identity through your own actions/negligence.

      • wouldn't anyone who cares have tapped the VPN server?

        • You can't "tap" a VPN server. That's the point. In a shared IP setup, there are hundreds or even thousands of inbound connections to the server, and many more outbound. To an outside observer, there is no way to say with any certainty that a particular outbound connection is matched to a particular inbound connection. That's why people use them.

Unlike a phone call, everything between your device and the VPN server is encrypted. AES256 encryption, for example, would take billions of years to crack using brute force. Someone could tap your internet connection but what they'd record would be useless to them.

Obviously, if the server is hacked and it's routing exposed, or the operator logs connections and hands the logs over, it's a different story.

        • tapped = government listening device

  • Hey lads

I just bought a starbucks e-gift card in order to get a PIA subscription.

Its been an hour and ive not received anything even though its supposed to only take "a few minutes".

Does anyone have any experience with how long it usually takes to get an e-gift card emailed out through starbucks?

    • +1

Not sure about when you will receive the card, but I contacted PIA online chat and they informed me that you can't use the gift card option for the discounted rate.

      • +1

I ended up trying to use the gift card and signed up with it anyway as i have nothing else i could do with it.

When i signed up the $29 USD only gave me 100 days :(

I spoke to PIA support about it and tried to get the 1 year deal and the guy was so rude. Just said nothing he can do about it and its not their problem.

I tried to get a refund and he said nope all transactions are final.

So i paid $29 USD for 100 days… total fail

Worst support experience ive ever had so beware everyone if you ever need to contact them get prepared for rude unhelpful staff

  • Any gamblers out there - Do you think they will repeat this deal on the 25th of December?

Thats when I subscribed last year at a similar discount (I think it was $31.99USD per year)

  • +1

    https://torrentfreak.com/huge-security-flaw-can-expose-vpn-u…

tldr: PIA are good guys that have fixed the exploit on their end already and rewarded their COMPETITOR for finding the exploit

A newly discovered vulnerability can expose the real IP-addresses of VPN users with relative ease. The issue, which affects all VPN protocols and operating systems, was uncovered by Perfect Privacy who alerted several affected competitors to the threat before making it public.

“We implemented firewall rules at the VPN server level to block access to forwarded ports from clients’ real IP addresses. The fix was deployed on all our servers within 12 hours of the initial report,” PIA’s Amir Malik says.

In addition, PIA complimented Perfect Privacy for responsibly disclosing the vulnerability prior to making it public and awarded their competitor with a $5,000 bounty under its Whitehat Alert Security Program.

  • I had 4 months left on my current subscription, but I figure a saving of 65%, and a new yearly alignment to Black Friday means I'll get a good deal every year. Just remember to cancel the subscription each time.
I was able to sign up with the same email address, so it seems you can have multiple accounts tied to a single email.
