  • LOL, this might deserve a deal on it's own! http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/42417/35044/2015-11-22_…

I have both PIA and Purevpn subscriptions, and if you are interested in using an Openvpn connection I find that PIA is slightly better (on average) than Purevpn. PureVPN with OpenVPN generally takes longer to authenticate, is often a bit slower, and screws up my routing tables sometimes. The PIA client uses OpenVPN by (rather than PPTP, which is what the PureVPN client uses) and so, unsurprisingly, OpenVPN works really well with PIA.

(If you want to stream video, Getflix is better and cheaper in my experience. I have a subscription for that too.)

      Cheers for the comparison.
PPTP isn't quite a secure protocol either.

      • No, it isn't. I suspect is is good enough for the purposes most people are using it for though.
One other oddity I found with PureVPN is that sometimes the same location will have really awful OpenVPN performance but totally fine PPTP performance (e.g. 5mbps down on PPTP, 0.25bmps down on OpenVPN).

PureVPN also permits L2TP, but my experience has been the performance on that is abysmal, and I wouldn't even consider actually using it.

I should also point out that PIA allows port forwarding on certain servers, whereas PureVPN doesn't have such a facility.

(Wow - I sound like I'm pitching for PIA. PureVPN is probably fine for most people but I do think PIA is actually a slightly better service)

        • purevpn has some option for port forwarding?: http://billing.purevpn.com/knowledgebase.php?action=displaya…

          I subscribed to PIA on thursday… thats $15 i won't get back.

        • @thepigs:
That's not actually port forwarding. That means they don't block any ports, but you will only receive incoming traffic to a port on which you've used outgoing traffic. (It isn't clear what kind of NAT this behaves like). However, with PIA on their forwarding-supported endpoints you can get them to allocate you a (randomly selected) port for which incoming traffic will be forwarded to you *even if it is not part of an existing connection).

At the moment I have both, and I can tell you that I'm still mostly using PIA.

There is always a deal on VPN on stacksocial…. lol

SO much soo it isnt really a "deal".

  • i've asked this before and never got an answer, but what happens if you buy a subscription to PureVPN or PIA and you find it rubbish? PureVPN/PIA have a 7 day money back but does StackSocial honour it too?

    • Stack social says all transactions are final, so I would imagine the answer is no.
Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if PayPal saw it differently…

(Note: the crappy refund policies of VPNs is one of my pet hates)
