  • Awesome thank you very much, I have used purevpn for nearly 10 years and now have life time thanks to you :)

(edit sorry I did not see you affiliate until now )

    • +1

Your welcome :) I'm not associated with PureVPN or Stacksocial, just passing on the love.

  • +1

Stacksocial website loads a little weird. Doesn't look very professional/trustworthy

    • Which browser are you using? Works fine with IE 11, Chrome and Firefox. Unfortunately the site doesn't appear to be mobile friendly for android or windows mobile devices, IOS is OK.

      • The website is broken on Firefox for me but is ok in Chrome..

Wondering if the 10% discount for first signup will work? Does this take it down another $6.90 USD?

        • I don't see why it wouldn't, it should be a promotion code that you can apply to the deal on the checkout page under the Total.

        • @Multipass: Yeah.. it worked.. Pays for the crappy AUD difference.. :(

Anyway.. thank you. I had to create a new account on top of my existing one because I couldnt use the redemption code for existing accounts (or so the online support told me). So now, got two accounts with one expiring April next year and the other in November 2020 (not sure if I'd call that lifetime, but still good for 5 years!)

  • +1

OP just to clarify. So if I pay $69 dollar to pureVPN, I will not have to do annual fee of some sort anymore. Basically lifetime means my membership of $69 is valid for lifetime or is it a discounted annual price that valid for lifetime ?

Also if I'm an existing member, will I be able to sign up for this ?

    • Yes you can sign up for this, Stacksocial provides you with a promotion code that you can apply to your existing account.

    • +11

Yea it is lifetime if you plan on dying in 5 years..

      • Oooh just notice that, thanks dharlem39 for pointing that out.

  • StackSocial is as trustworthy as Groupon etc.

Don't get the meaning of lifetime here, and it's a bit dubious that they don't define it.

My account details say next due date is 05/11/2020. Five years of access for the price isn't bad at all so not complaining, but the term lifetime just makes me suspicious of stuff.

    • +9

basically you are signing your soul away to the devil. in 2020 he will take you to hell hence the deal is for your lifetime. im not sure thats a good deal.

    • I agree, the term 'lifetime' isn't stated anywhere in the terms or conditions and I would assume that 'lifetime' generally refers to the lifetime of the product/service offering until such time that product/service is grandfathered and replaced with another product/service offering. Unfortunately I have not received any correspondence back from StackSocial or PureVPN for clarification but as you have discovered it is 5 years.

      • I forgot to mention, I got a 10% off for new users pop up on stacksocial, got a coupon code in my email and applied it. So I paid just over US$62. Probably worth adding to the OP.

        • Cheers scynaz, updated OP.

  • I'm really happy with my service and about half way or so through my first year. Will take up this deal if it is going to give me 5 years or more.. :)

  • +1

Tempted to do this….I signed up for their service for 2 years ($49.95) and thought that was a ripper of a deal! Does this include free Smart DNS?

  • +4

    Just checked with PureVPN support.

This is valid for 5 years. Apparently we'll all be dead in five years. Or something. Still a decent price I guess.

    NO Smart DNS included.

    • +5

Kind of shady advertising, saying lifetime = 5 yrs

      • +4

        Unlimited lifetime product!^

^valid for 5% of actual usage, based on lifetime of a butterfly

        • Might be worth reading the T&Cs to see whether you're agreeing to let them kill you after 5 years :)

      • a bit dodgy then

    • Can someone explain me why do I need something like Smart DNS to watch Neflix/Hulu, etc? Preferebaly on technical level. No on sales rep level. Any VPN would allow me to use any DNS server I want. Why would I need to use "Smart DNS"?

      • +1

        F

      • +6

Well you asked for technical, so here goes:

You configure your device to use their DNS servers (PureVPN's in this case). You need a subscription as their DNS servers only respond to requests coming from external ip addresses linked to a subscription.

The inevitable question is why would you want to use their DNS servers instead of your ISP or Google's 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4.

It's not the DNS part you pay for - the term DNS proxy is more accurate. Their DNS response for netflix.com or hbonow.com does not point to the real DNS record, but to their own servers, which proxy your connection to these geo-restricted services. Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like - you are paying for a DNS spoofing / poisoning server.

As a result your connections to geo-restricted providers like HBO or Netflix are proxied via a PureVPN operated server in the appropriate ip range - HBO via US, BBC iPlayer via UK etc. All other traffic goes as it normally would.

This is preferred over routing ALL your traffic over VPN or via a proxy because the volume of traffic that is used to determine your location by HBO, Netflix etc. is very small. The actual video stream is served by a CDN like akamai, which has no geo checks or geo blocking, and comes to you direct when you use a Smart DNS provider. Thus, using smart DNS proxies usually gets you a faster connection without paying for business grade VPN.

If you are technically inclined, sign up for a trial with getflix or a similar service and do some lookups and trace routes, you'll quickly see what's going on.

        With default DNS server configured:

        $ nslookup hbonow.com
        Server: 192.168.0.1
        Address: 192.168.0.1#53

        Non-authoritative answer:
        Name: hbonow.com
        Address: 209.102.210.40

        With Getflix Sydney DNS servers:

        $ nslookup hbonow.com
        Server: 54.252.183.4
        Address: 54.252.183.4#53

        Name: hbonow.com
        Address: 199.244.115.40

      • Just to follow on from @scynaz good work, I imagine putting your faith in say, googles DNS servers may be a potential security problem. It means that you're relying on them not to trace your online behaviour. (See: google complicit NSA)

On the flip side, as Scynaz says, you can use JUST the SmartDNS product to connect to the CDN of those streaming services, rather than all traffic. This would be preferable for speed, generally.
You wouldn't download torrents this way though, for obvious reasons.

    • Does anyone know if there is a cheap way to get the smart dns included,$4.25 AUD/month sort of make the deal much less value for my scenario

    • Does this mean we can get a refund in 5 years when it stops working due to false advertising?

Free VPN for five years makes this the best bargain! ;)

  • +5

I had a 12 month service with PureVPN and found most of their servers to be slow. Average 1-4Mbps.

I say most, because there are some really fast servers out there too. The problem is that they're typically located in a country with more 'restrictions' than the country your currently in E.G: Brunei.

You can check it out for yourself using their speed-test tool here: https://www.purevpn.com/speed-test

This was twelve months ago though, so things may have improved. Buyer beware.

    • +3

i agree, used to watch TVB easily on purevpn, i have since let my remaining months just lie dormant because it's just simply unusable for that purpose anymore, nothing streams from TVB and it just displays black screen.

support were completely useless and jumped ship to vyper, works even better than the best purevpn ever did!

    • +1

Work really well for me. Brunai server is the best for Australia.

On my 100mbps connection, I get 100mbps via the vpn (drops to 70 or so in peak times).

When connecting to the Brunai server you connect to either brunai, singapore or germany (i dont know how it works, but its very different from connecting to singapore or germany directly).

Brunai is ok speed wise, singapore is horrendous, while germany gets me the above posted speeds of 100/70.

That being said now ive just started connecting to the Aussie server as, even though torrents arent allowed, they still work.

    • Brunei has more 'restrictions'? Not sure where you're getting that information but in places like Brunei filesharing is actually legal, hence less restrictions :). If you just want a quick way to go online anonymously then definitely choose an Aus server. I have normal speeds of 100mbps that are clearly throttled by my ISP as when I connect to Pure's Aussie server I see speeds of around 140mbps d/load. On their Brunei servers speeds are inevitably slower, but if you are going to torrent then that's your best option right now.

  • cheers op

  • Do they have servers supporting port-forwarding like PIA?

    • I did see somewhere on their site to suggest port forwarding to be a standard feature.
But I think you need to subscribe NAT Firewall addon to get that working.

    • Taken from their knowledge base, "All ports are opened on PureVPN Network but unsolicited connections are blocked due to security reasons.". As cookie_lu mentioned you have to purchase the Web Protection and NAT Firewall add-on if you are wanting to port forward specific ports.

      Ref: http://billing.purevpn.com/knowledgebase.php?action=displaya…

    • Yes. Took me forever via sending emails (needed a port-forwarded in order to get Plex working remotely) and eventually they just did it on their end for my specific account - was done at no cost.

EDIT: No NAT addons etc were required. I only have their primary VPN service, not even SmartDNS.

  • How long is their life time?

    • 5 years

      • I feel stupid now.

      • That's the lifetime for a real mouse ;)

  • +6

    Encrypt data w/ proprietary software, a self-engineered network & absolutely no third-parties

Just throwing it out there, but encrypting data with self-engineered proprietary software is always a bad idea.

I'm sure it's just fine for dodging geoblocking, but I wouldn't advise to use it for anything sensitive unless it's going via HTTPS.

    — Your friendly IT Security OzBargainer

  • Was on thelookout for a vpn. I used your referral link cheers

    • Cheers, much appreciated :)

  • It looks like they support openVPN, i.e. it can be setup to work with openWRT etc.

  • Sorry to ask about this, but I bought a lifetime getflix account (30yrs), but want to ask is there any difference with this as I thought that I already get VPN with getflix (just been lazy to set up). Can anyone point out the difference and why I may need to purchase this?
    Thank you in advance

    • See my comment below about this - I'm much happier with Getflix's VPN and the only thing I gained from trying PureVPN was a higher blood pressure.

      • Thank you, at least avoided that one and I'll stick with getflix

    • +1

The difference is purevpn's lifetime is 5 years.

  • I had such a horrible experience with PureVPN from the last deal on here. I finally got my money back after a week… it was like trying to get blood from a stone. Which mirrors the experience of most people who try to use their money back "guarantee". See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/217191?page=1#comment-3169…

I'm much happier just using the VPN that comes with my "lifetime" Getflix. It's been much more reliable, and dealing with the company doesn't make me want to break things.

    • Yeah I find they're one of those annoying companies who when you request a refund ( at least in my case ) kept telling me to try other things in order to make the service faster. I'm not an idiot, I've tried what I needed to try.

  • +1

    PureVPN doesn't allow torrenting?
Are you kidding me, it's the main reason people use VPN.

    • +2

That information is incorrect. It does.

      • Torrenting is limited to just a few of the countries they have servers in. About 6 from memory. Netherlands is one of them.

        • +2

And by 6, what you actually mean is 83.

          http://support.purevpn.com/p2p-file-sharing

        • @cheesecactus:

We actively block sharing of copyrighted materials/torrents on our servers as per changing global web policies to keep our service in compliance. As of now, we allow file sharing on Turkey, Sweden, Romania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany (de1 only) and Russian servers.

          https://www.purevpn.com/privacy-policy.php

Which means, "as per changing web policies", that PureVPN may at some point in the future be useless for torrenting.

        • @shaybisc:

Did you not click the link i sent you? 83 countries man.

"Last Updated November 4, 2015" (The link you sent is obviously outdated)

P2P/ Filesharing is allowed with our service on the below mentioned shared servers / countries.

Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Armenia, The Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Bolivia, British Virgin Islands, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Dominicia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Ethiopia, Germany, Ghana, Gernada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macao, Madagascar, Mauritiania, Mauritius, Moldova, Monaco, Mongolia, Montserrat, Myanmar, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Saint Lucia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Seychelles, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Sweden, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Venezuela

And as for "as per changing web policies", pretty much all VPNs do this.

  • Does anyone know how this compares to VPN Unlimited - also on Stack Social for US $39? https://stacksocial.com/sales/vpn-unlimited-lifetime-subscri…

Also, where exactly does it say that it's only for 5 years? Couldn't find it.

    • "After testing VPN Unlimited for over 7 days, I can safely say that I don't recommend it to anyone looking for a speedy VPN service. Nonetheless, if you're a cheapskate always looking for the cheapest deal, well, VPN Unlimited could be the perfect VPN for you, if you don't mind the interface with visual quirks and the slow, slow network speed."

      https://vpnrevie.ws/2015/05/20/vpn-unlimited-review/

  • 5 years is real- lifetime is idiotic flim flam sucker bait. I'm reassured that we know that this is 5 years.

  • +3

How can they get away with advertising a lifetime subscription which is only 5 years? I quickly glanced through the license and terms and it's not obvious where this 5 year restriction is stated.

I hate companies that try to trick their paying customers, hence I'll be cancelling my subscription to purevpn, which I've had for 2 years because of this.

That won't bother purevpn as plenty of people will get tricked into signing up (for the lifetime of a rabbit).

    • +2

Must correct you, the deal is not even good for a lifetime of a rabbit.
In average they live 9 years (according to google).
      :-)

  • +1

It baffles me why any reputable company would allow their name to be associated with "lifetime" deals, which reek of let's get all the sucker money, shut this thing down and do a midnight flit to the Bahamas.

  • I just got the membership last week and now seriously considering to refund it and take this deal

  • If you have a current PureVPN subscription this deal will end it- the 5 years starts from the day you pay for it. That means, in my case, I will be getting 4.5 years. I'll think about it.

    • Oh seriously, it doesnt stack? That sucks, ive still got a year and a bit left on my current plan.

      • Don't feel bad about this. By then there will be better deal or vpn provider.

        • Hell, im still getting it. 3.5 years for $90 is still great.

  • I'm now with them for the annual subscritpion and I definitely DO NOT recommend this VPN provider as their network connection constantly drops. They refused to refund me because my usage exceeded the 500mb data limit. Please think carefully before you choose their service. PS: I'm on the OPTUS NBN 25M/5M plan and there's no issue with my Internet.

  • Umm?
"Our servers automatically record the time at which you connect to any of our servers, and the IP that was given to you."

  • +1

So why do so many people say PureVPN is crap when Choice(who I generally trust) give it a good rating ?

  • To me they were good. But now I am not so sure. They have been doing too many "deals" to attract more subscribers. Like driven by greed going for quantity rather balance with quality.

Ironically they are getting very popular. How does it help you staying off the radar with their service.

  • +1

Can't decide whether to pull the trigger based on comments above…

    • Likewise, I've got PIA, but the reviews on here are far too inconsistent reasonable decision.

    • i'm in the same boat, but i think i've decided to go with PIA. Going to wait a few weeks until they have a another sale, they seem to have them around holiday times, thanksgiving and christmas and the like.

I mainly want it for torrenting, and the speed reviews i've found floating around reddit, whirlpool and here arent that promising, less so than PIA.

  • Has anyone stacked this with the subscription from last week with free SmartDNS?? I guess I'm curious if it will cancel the SmartDNS, or indeed extend it, or smart DNS will work for a year and then be disabled for the next 4-5 years of the subscription?

  • You are actually betting they will still be around for next 5 years. In reality, they can disappear any moment and kill the 'life' of their company.

    • No, you are betting they will be around for more than 2 years, at which point every day is "extra" compared to if you went on a 2 year plan that costs roughly the same

  • +2

    Interestingly:

    TERMS
    All sales final
    Instant digital redemption
After the 5-year initial term, contact the vendor to re-activate at no additional charge

    • +1

They just updated the TERMS of service on StackSocial to reflect this, it was not mentioned previously. I would assume that the re-activation will be of the same subscription so potentially getting at least a minimum of 10 years but I would suggest that everyone take a screen dump and keep it handy for the renewal in 5 years.

      http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:PqTtIGT…

  • "Last week 51,741 users embraced 100% online privacy, security and freedom from geo-restrictions with PureVPN."

    Holy cow!

    • Yeah similar number everyday. Must be number of active users.

  • I sent Stack Social a question about the inclusion of SmartDNS, here's their response (finally).

    "Hi,

Thanks for your interest in PureVPN!

Sorry for the confusion. Here's the lowdown. Subscription term is for 5 years. At the conclusion of the 5-year term, customers may renew their subscriptions completely free-of-charge by contacting [email protected]

SmartDNS is a paid add-on. Customers will be charged additional if they opt for any add-on and will also be required to download a different version of our software. If a user requires an add-on they can connect to our Live Chat and request it."

  • +1

Thanks, PureVPN team for this wonderful lifetime deal.

    • You're welcome we are glad to help.

  • redundant

  • I am cutting it pretty close to the wire but ELI5 what is the need for SmartDNS when one is already connected to VPN service in another nation? My understanding was that a VPN negates the need for a SmartDNS

  • I'm in my second year of using PureVPN and apart from doing some 'funny things' to my DNS settings (using SmartDNS) in Win 10 (when first released) I have been very happy. The 'funny things' resulted in no internet access at all until I figured out the problem and how to fix it. Of course no one knows what is going to happen in the future regarding the security or otherwise of any VPN setup.

Despite the lifetime bit this appears to be an excellent deal.

  • Here Is another good PureVPN deal, this includes SmartDNS - 2 years for USD $49.95 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/222220

Another excellent VPN with SmartDNS that rates well, easy to use is CactusVPN; also with a deal USD 38.49/year - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/222239

  • +1

I got the 2-yr $49.95 deal with free SMart DNS.
