Agreed. My 7950 his iceq is the quietest gpu I have ever owned and it always kept the card cool. It's pretty big though, even bigger than my 980ti which performs much better.
Contemplating purchase, just a bit unsure on the R290's age or if it's worth buying a newer card.
It is a DX11.2 card as opposed to recent ones being DX12 compatible.
Probably not a deal breaker, but if you plan on keeping it for a while, maybe the 3xx series is a better choice - hopefully with a price drop or two around xmas. All GCN cards support DX12. This was confirmed by AMD over a year ago.
Edit: Found the press release.

Ahh nice one! Have a 290x and didn't even about know this! :)
Was almost going to pull the trigger, however it's concerning that 25% of reviews is 1 star with plenty of DOA and faults, etc… :-/
I had an HIS 6850 that faulted just as the warranty expired (I'm talking about a week or two, they refused warranty, I'm not blaming them). I spent like 2 hours looking online for a replacement fan and eventually one came from China after 3-4 weeks (only place I could find one). The fan was like $4 I think and it took like 10 mins to replace which kept it happy for another 8-10months before I decided to upgrade. I was given an R9 270 out of a decommissioned Dell XPS which has been solid. It drives my 2560 x 1440 monitor on ultra and I haven't seen a stutter yet.
have an older IceQ x2 7970 ,
its great design, i never hear any noise from fans.
have been seeing 58c last few days in games.
its good design imho
