  • 2000 TBW seems pretty good

why do :| that ok 243 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B27_j9NDPU3cNlj2HKcr… It a high end NVME

  • Why do they charge so much extra for the heatsink version? You can just buy one for $10

    • This is the invisible hand(

    • +3

Likely to just make a bit more off the PS5 buyers.

    • 4tb is an extra 10, whilst the 2tb is an extra 20.

      That doesnt seem too bad

      • Only extra $20 for the heatsink version? We must be looking at a different deal.

        2tb w heatsink = $265
        2tb w/o heatsink = $189

        • I'm looking at the regular price, sale price fluctuates depending on their stock for that SKU.

Are we also going to wonder why the 4TB version with heatsink, currently costs less?

They are different SKU's, it's not like they drop a $10 heatsink in there for anyone who wants one.

After this past Xmas Steam sales, I've also been looking for another m.2 drive.

I saw this 2TB Silicon Power UD90 on PLE computers for $159.

    • +4

Silicon Power UD90 - QLC NAND and no DRAM cache, ewww

  • Damn it's such a huge jump in price per storage for the 4TB version

  • Is this card good? Say compared to WD black or Lexar 790

    • +2

Similar to SN850X, might be better. I'm not sure

    • +4

Its basically rated as third best gen 4. Behind the Samsung Pro which is top. Very similar but still slightly behind the WD Black SN850x. The multitasking capabilites under load put the Kingston 2nd, only fractionally behind Samsung. So its a workhorse drive for creators, at almost half the price of the Samsung. For most people they wont see the differences between drives unless they are multitasking and abusing the drive lol. By far the best value drive on the market for its performance. With DRAM, TLC and great consistent read/write speeds. Its an automatic buy if you need a M.2.

Lexar changed their controller chip to cheap rubbish plus they have a poor flash, so once the drive is getting full it performs worse than a HDD. Also means less reliability.

  • What's the best 'enclosure' or similar to connect this to an M4 Mac and take advantage of the speeds still?

    • +1

      You'll need ThunderBolt 4 NVMe M.2 enclosure

      • Cheers. From what I know it’ll still be a bit capped - 40GB connection = 4GB read write max?

Still, future proof and this SSD doesn’t seem any more expensive than slower ones I’ve seen

        • 40GB connection

          Thunderbolt 4 isn't 40GB, its 40Gb. Not 40 gigaBYTES/sec, but 40 gigaBITS/sec. Which is about 4-5 GB/s.

    • I've got a MAIWO thunderbolt 4 NVMe enclosure with one of these SSD's in it connected to an M4 Mac mini. I see around 2900 MB/s in BlackMagic disk speed test. It does run quite warm if you use it as your boot drive.

You can get the enclosure on Aliexpress for around US$45.

      • This seems to have the most sales at 56 - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007148226951.html?srcSns…

I was thinking of “mapping” documents, applications etc to the SSD. I haven’t done a whole lot of research on that, assume possible.

Given the mini comes with 256GB storage and it’s outrageous to upgrade 🥲

        • Seems to be a few models looking more, ozbargain says the links are affiliate spam though. None seem to mention PCI4

        • That is the one I have.

I did a fresh install of Mac OS to the external drive and now boot from this. It's faster booting and operating than from the internal storage.

This SSD is more than fast enough for a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure.

      Acasis 40Gbps Tool-free M.2 NVMe Thunderbolt 3/4 USB 4 SSD Enclosure
Compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4, USB 4/3.2/3.1/3/2

  • Note: This is a double sided SSD and may not be compatible with all laptops.

  • Is this good as a primary drive/windows drive? Looking to upgrade from my current 256gb primary.

    • This is one of the top PCIe Gen 4 M.2

Centre Com deal is better for those not in the East Coast, since shipping is more expensive.

    • Centre com does free shipping on this item if you have an account.

I'm all aboard the Kingston train. Got 2x 4tb KC3000's in a recent upgrade for my 2024 Asus TUF A15, been smooth sailing since the installation.

Got the Kingston Fury 4tb w/ Heatsink less than a month ago and that too has been fantastic.
