    • Any chance you have a link to the official release global miui 7 beta? My "radio" app is in chinese which i assume means I have the chinese release?

      cheers

      • +1

        Here you go.

        • Thanks mate. Last question. It looks like this is the global "stable" rom.
Does anyone know if I will lose anything/any features if I upgrade(downgrade?) from the miui7 chinese "developer" rom?

        • @Benjamin7711:
          I also found this comment at the top of the comments section in your link;

"Note 2 will not get Global ROM as its a China only phone, click on the China ROM link http://en.miui.com/thread-176188-1-1.html to get your required download"

        • hi Clear
can you confirm if the below link is the correct one to download?

          http://en.miui.com/download-274.html

Theres only the China version no global version. does this matter?
          thanks

        • Hi Clear ,
would you happened to know if the version shipped has been flashed before its send?i was told it has been rooted .does it mean i dont have to root it ?

  • -4

Pity, most people just need a reliable, trust-able phone for use. Why do people need to tackle on spyware? Not everyone is tech geek, nor that most people have time to entertain this. Save your time and money just buy a Nexus 5 which currently is about A$250 from eBay. Stay away from those Chinese crap.

    • Disagree. I had the Nexus 5 in 2013. Battery is rubbish.

Just switched from my iPhone 6 to this phone.

A shit ton better than the 5.

    • the people putting on the spyware are third parties, how the hell is Xiaomi meant to control what someone else does after buying their phones?

  • I bought this phone from geekbuying as well during their last promotion. I keep getting those ads to install and the phone downloads mysterious ads that install themselves overnight. I have done a lot of stuff on this phone such as Paypal logins, bank login, emails and social media. Did all my personal information just get leaked to their servers? If so, then I have to say I am very disappointed with geekbuying from sourcing from a supplier that installs spyware.

    • Unfortunately there is possibility that your information got stolen, though necessarily has happened. There are good reasons to always go for prestigious company products. I feel sorry for people jumped into those crappy vendors. You might feel getting a bargain at the beginning, but your interests are not protected in a decent way. With big companies such as Apple, Google or Microsoft, at least people get a chance to launch a class action for compensation and penalty. But for Xiaomi? You better pray.

Not just Xiaomi, in fact people should avoid using "custom roms" as so many variation from different sources, chances of having Trojaned OS cannot be underestimated, particularly if you use the the phone for some serious purposes such as finance.

Bottom line is since so many people have found security issues with Xiaomi phones, these products should be avoided at all cost. Cases should be reported to ACCC if possible, and post your experience and reviews in social media.

      • nyes

      • mate you're "ITVeteran" and telling people to launch a class action against a phone manufacturer because someone else decided to add not too nice stuff to a custom rom ?

        you're not too smart

        • +1

And the other issue is that Xiaomi doesn't even operate in Australia at all. Attempting to report them to the ACCC will do nothing whatsoever.

    • For sure your information leaked to their server. You better change your log in detail & password (financial institution) before thing get worse. Flash the phone with miui7 (stable or developer rom) from miui.com and you can see the big different and you will be safer.

I purchased one of these last month from another chinese retailer (Coolicool). It came installed with a custom rom with quite alot of bloatware/malware. Ads would pop up and the battery life was abysmal. This was all fixed when i flashed to MIUI7 stable rom and now the phone runs like a champ. Heres a guide to flashing to MIUI7: http://en.miui.com/thread-175037-1-1.html
Also after installing MIUI7 (because redmi note 2 only has china stable rom available and no global rom) you will also likely need to install Google Apps aswell. (I know i had to.) A guide to this aswell: http://en.miui.com/thread-182956-1-1.html

If you dont mind doing this bit of friggin' around you will have one outstanding performing phone for the money.

  • I bought the same phone for my son from geekbuying last deals. With TNT free shipping it was delivered to metro sydney in 1 week. After flashed it with miui 7 and install google play, the phone works like a champ. Now I am waiting the release of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro as an upgrade from my Lenovo K3 Note.

    • Were you charged import taxes for choosing. Tnt

      • +2

You don't get an import charge unless it exceeds $1000.

        • Thank you clear

      • No

  • saw something about the Mi5 and next note coming soon? is it a good time to buy?

    • Rumoured to be the grand final of the year. It'll likely cost a bit more than the Mi4c as its a flagship.

I bought from gearbest last month and It cost me about 256$Aud. As so many op face the custom rom with bloatware/malware. The first week that I used it with optus, I lost my data about 2.5GB without watching any steaming video like youtube. However after I flash the official Chinese stable rom (MiUi7) It's totally different like another phone. I suggest anyone that willing to buy this phone flash the official rom before setting your account to it.

For OP who didn't know about the radio. You don't have to flash any international to listen to the radio. On radio app there is a circle radio icon on the top right, you just click it then now it an offline radio that you can seek any channel you like to listen. eg.- 96.9 Nova, 104.1 2dayFM. Cheers.

PS. Sorry for my bad english.

    • watching any steaming video

that cost your 2.5 GB data.just kidding .thanks for the info.

      • solidsnake Please read carefully. I said "without watching any steaming video like youtube" mean I did not watch any steaming video on internet. I just surfing website and play social network apps. The custom rom which come with the phone is crap for sure. There are ton of malware that will automaticly pre-download apps to your phone before they asked your permission to install them. That why I lost 2.5 GB in one week.

        • +1

Denver, Solidsnake was merely making a joke, as I think you meant to type "streaming" as opposed to "steaming". I appreciate the information you provided though, and will be sure to flash a new rom before installing my sim.

        • @goose25:
My bad LOL. I recomended that you must do flashing rom as soon as you get the phone. If you want the international rom, you should go to this website.

        • hey denver how did you flash your phone ?

        • +1
        • @Clear: sorry clear but where is the link to the file? these are screenshots.am i missing something ? sorry new to this.do not want to brick my phone.

        • +1

@solidsnake: Looks like you need to create an account and reply to see the link.

  • I wanted to get this but it seems the majority of VIC 4G Vodafone towers are 850Mhz http://oztowers.com/Home/Bands#tabs-3

Is my interpretation right that this would have a big impact?

    • +1

Yeah almost 50% are 850Mhz. You might still be ok in the cities, if you are ok with it dropping to 3G. Luckily it supports all Vodafone 3G bands 850/900/2100.

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one of these tonight, and was told by a Geekbuying representative in "live chat" it will be rooted, play store will be installed and latest firmware will be installed. However when I asked in the "live chat" whether this would be MIUI v7, I was told "it will be the older version, as it is more stable". I guess I'll be flashing it myself.

I used the coupon code mentioned earlier with the glass screen protector and it brought it to just under US$160, however TNT shipping was an extra US$1.60 roughly.

I'm upgrading from the Lenovo K3 note, as I've been having massive issues with battery life (admittedly gave up on flashing new firmware after 1529 dev). Some days I'm down to 15% battery remaining by 11:30am. If battery life wasn't an issue, I'd highly recommend the K3 note.

I was tossing up between this Xiaomi and the Elephone P8000, which I bought for my father. The P8000 looks great, has a nice battery and is fast with 3gb of ram. My only niggle with it is the fingerprint scanner doesn't always work, and it's a little on the heavy side. I hope I made the right choice…

    • My personal recommendation is to go with Xiaomi as Elephone have a good record of not releasing promised updates. Fortunately the community tend to release custom ROMs though.

  • Can someone confirm that the non prime Redmi Note 2 linked in the OP is compatible with FDD-LTE frequencies? I believe the seller is saying that it is not officially supported, but the FDD frequencies work anyway. Anyone more knowledgeable than me able to confirm this? Thanks!

    • +1

http://www.willmyphonework.net/ should help out. Choose Xiaomi, Redmi 2 Prime, Australia and then your carrier.

      • I am a little unsure of the frequencies at which this phone operates on 3G. In the specs for the phone it has WCDMA 850 and 2100 MHz but in the above link you provided it states only 2100MHz for Telstra. I specifically need the 850MHz on the Telstra Network, are you able to clarify if this would work? TIA.

        • It has 850Mhz.

  • Hmm interesting, I was going to go with the Xperia Z5 then I saw this. The Mi5 looks great, might hold out for its release, thanks Ozbargain :)

I just received my phone today thanks to TNT shipping. As expected it came with a fake rom miui 77.| stable 77.00.66.00. I could not install TWRP or update to eu rom, so I have to use the fast boot method http://en.miui.com/a-234.html to flash to stable china version V7.0.8.0. I have installed google play using mi app store.

I also ordered the Makibes screen protector and MOSKII case and very happy now.

  • price has gone up to AUD 286 now.

how about following same mobile from everbuying at AUD 217?

    http://www.everbuying.com/product1078807.html

    • Everbuying is actually Gearbest and it's been mentioned above that the exchange rate is incorrect. You'll get charged more.

    • It is still showing me USD 165.99 for the gray colour.

      • YA it does for some models.. Thanks

  • Still have not received ANY shipping notification. It has been over a week since I ordered. I have also tried e-mailing support to check the item status and still haven't heard back.

    I am getting worried….

    • What's your order number? I'll follow it up.

      • Thanks for offering. The company eventually got back to me and confirmed it was shipped on the 23rd and emailed me a tracking number. They just didn't confirm the order and notifiy me that it was picked and sent.

I do have a question however. I saw the new Redmi note 3 and I would be interested in getting it. Would Geekbuying honor an exchange?

  • All together how much time will it take to to get the deliver in Melbourne 3000?

    • Processing can take up to a week usually. TNT shipping is currently showing as free for me and takes about 3-5 days to arrive.

      • YEs it does shows free for me too should I do that? will i get within 15 days?

        • Yep. I had a package with TNT arrive from Geekbuying in 4 days this week.

        • @Clear: It Says $41.49 now for tnt

        • @jontymate: Is that in the cart or checkout? I just clicked on Proceed to Checkout and it said $0.

        • @Clear: YA got it after adding address to it. Should I get the insurance?

        • @jontymate: What about the other shipping options like DHL?

        • @Clear: DHL is $15

        • @jontymate: Probably best to go for that if TNT is $40. DHL is just as fast. Insurance is up to you.

        • @Clear: is it much difference apart from GBs in 16GB and 32 GB version?

        • @jontymate: The system will take up about 4GB, so you're better off getting the Prime in this deal with 32GB.

        • @Clear: bought one thank you

  • got mine today thanks. now have to figure out how to flash it .

  • I bought one Monday about 7am with 3-5 days delivery. Yesterday my housemate gave me his iPhone so I have no need of this anymore, thought it would nearly be here by now and last night got notification it had just been shipped!
Probably could have cancelled, no way will 3-5 days delivery from ordering it happen at this rate

    • The 3-5 days is how long it takes to arrive from send date. It does not include processing.

      • Ok any Melbourne ozbargainers want one?

  • Serious question above, got the tempered screen protector too, not going to open it so if anyone missed out on this price, PM me

  • I just got the phone today. It seems MiUi 7 is already installed. There are a few per-installed apps which look dodge. Not sure how to remove them. And there is no widget?!

    • follow this. If your MIUI version is 77.0.66.0 then you have got a fake ROM and better to flash it with official one.

      • Thanks, it is 77.0.66.0. What is fake ROM BTW?

        • It is not the original MiUI version, but a modified one either by a re-seller or a supplier.

  • Order Date: 11/24/2015
    Order Status: Payment Confirmed (Processing)

    Is this normal?

  • Anyone purchased from these guys are they ok,ship quick and not hassles thinking of buying an item but never purchased before.

    • Free shipping typically takes 3-4 weeks, but TNT will take 3-5 days after processing.

  • Got mine today..Charging ….
