There is something wrong with the world when not having junkware is a feature.

"Signature PCs come with Windows Defender, free anti-virus protection that never expires."

      Yay, Windows Defender preinstalled…

  • Can't find info about battery life

    • +2

Apparently a 12 hour* battery life, according to Amazon.
      http://www.amazon.com/Dell-i15547-5003sLV-16-Inch-i5-4210U-S…

      I believe it's closer to 8 hours.

Edit: and the most helpful review say 4 hours life on mixed use.

      • Thanks.
According to microsoft tech specs, this laptop has an optical drive, but the amazon one doesn't seem to have one (from photos)

      • +1

That's a different machine, from what I can gather the model for this is Inspiron 15 i5558-5717SLV.

Official battery is up to 7 hours.

This seems to be identical to what's listed on Australia's MS store:

        http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Dell-Ins…

        • This laptop from MS store Inspiron 15 i5558-5717SLV is cheaper, for $549.

Most specs are same as Dell Inspiron 15 Signature Edition Laptop - $699.

          Strange.

        • @sunaus: Inspiron 15 i5558-5717SLV is in MS US STORE, 549 IS US DOLLOR. WHILE THE 699 ONE IS IN MS AU STORE. AND IS AU DOLLOR

        • @ce5himm:

          Correctomondo

        • @ce5himm:

          You are correct.

The new version of this laptop with the skylake procesor was selling at $1099 on the dell website last month. It's back up to $1499

    Hi Frieds,

Can some one tell me How to claim cash back?

For the screen it says HD but 1920x1080?

    • Yes

    • from tech specs:

      Display
      15.6 in HD LED-backlit touchscreen with TrueLife (1920 x 1080), 10-finger multi-touch support

  • Not a bad deal

  • how much is the cashback? from what I can see, its about 0.5%-1%

  • good deal its 2.5 months till i go os or i would have got one.

    • +2

It will work anywhere in the world.

      • I think he meant TRS.

  • My laptops processor is an i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz.. so is this an upgrade or not?

    • That would be a no. Unless you're talking on-board graphics which might be better here.

      • Ok thanks.

      • +1

This is the top 5th gen onboard GPU, definitely better than fourth gen.

        • +2

But its still an Intel onboard GPU
          "Intel HD Graphics 6000"

        • It's probably not better than the CPU model stated. Especially i5 vs i7.

        • @Lukian: specifically, my comment was about the GPU. It out performs the 4700's onboard GPU by almost 40%.

        • @Michael15286: True! Good point.

  • Wow what a deal.

  • Really good price for the specs, but that hard drive needs to go.

    • Yeah it's why I bought the equivalent one from Lenovo cause its customisable with 128GB SSD and it has the Intel 1080p 3D webcam. Also I can return it within 14 days if it doesn't suit my needs

      • How much did you pay for your Lenovo? Which did you get?

        • +1

Thinkpad E550 - $886 and I think the graphics is discrete
I must have bought one of the last ones yesterday because it disappeared last night
Here is the 6th gen equivalent of what I got:
          http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/deals/current-offers/laptops-fo…

        • @yoyomablue: downgrade to Windows 7 need $100. I find this amusing.

        • @yoyomablue: the e550 is still there this is 887.63, while this one come with on board graphic only
Intel Core i5-5200U Processor (3MB Cache, up to 2.70GHz)

        • @ruriruri:
          Windows 7 Pro, not Home?

        • @ce5himm:
Yeah, that is the one without discrete graphics - mine got the AMD R7 M260 Gfx 2G i5-5200U, which I understand to be discrete graphics? It wasn't clear from their description, but I assume so because the Intel Motherboard already has onboard graphics.
I also got it with Intel 7265AC+BT 2x2 No vPro, which has the additional wifi antennae for better connectivity
Mine was $886 through the education store - was only $26 saving over standard
I am hoping the IntelSense 1080p 3D webcam can stream television picture, otherwise will have to return. Trialled the stream on a MacBook Pro that has a 720p webcam and there was a constant 'white out' effect from the television picture (might have to turn the brightness down & the contrast up on the television though)
I am hoping the discrete graphics makes a big difference for handling 'Extended Display' function - effectively one graphics card running two displays at 1080p (1. laptop, 2. television), plus it has stream the television picture live (will probably use YouTube LiveStream)

        • @yoyomablue: then i think your one is much better one.

    • Is it easy to switch out the HDD for one on the cheap SSDs that are here on Ozbargain?

      Any issues with the OS?

      • +1

If I was a betting man I would say strong odds on HDD being easily replaced.

  • +8

Dat weight though is heavier than my wifes guilt when she eats junk food.
2.45kg is heaps some of the dell laptops are 1.2 or less now

    • +3

Different class of laptop. This is your typical business style laptop.

Be mindful that the LAN is 10/100Mbps, not gigabit.

    • I wonder if that is a listing mistake because it is pretty poor these days for this kind of product.

      • Not listing mistake, Dell has been retarded that way for a while. Even my 17 inch Inspiron 7720 has no gigabit port.

    • definitely a negative there although 802.11ac makes up for it i suppose

      • +4

Can't see that it would matter for most people.

  • Is it good price for it specs ? Will it go down further after Christmas ?

    • Yes, and this is probably the cheapest you'll see it until it's discontinued.

  • +2

just talk to MS online chat, the keyboard is not backlight, looks like they are not confident about the screen res. "not sure whether 1920x1080, just show me "15.6 in HD LED-backlit touchscreen with TrueLife (1920 x 1080), 10-finger multi-touch support"

  • The Inspiron 15 5000 Series (Advanced) model with 6th generation chipset is i5-6200U Processor is 899 on the Dell website, so it's not a true $400 discount. The old model is priced higher than the new one (even on Dell).

This is $100 less than that, of course. (For the older model). It's a runout for an old model.

Just putting this info out there in case it's useful to anyone. Still a great deal, but lower specs.

    • i think this one is touch screen and might be full hd, while the 899 one is not.

      • You're right, the screen on the other one is nasty. I hadn't noticed that.

  • +2

Shit. Was looking for a laptop for mum for Christmas. Nice looking machine and decent specs.

I just haven't done my research yet. Do I get it?

    • 10-finger multi-touch support

It depends on how many fingers your Mom has.

      • Do thumbs count as fingers still?

        • well…good question. If they are NOT counted as fingers, I think Dell is weird

  • +2

Good deal, but no back lit keys is a deal breaker for me. What is the next best deal with illuminated keys?

    • +3

The next best deal is learning to touch type to save yourself money on backlit keyboards.

  • +1

So I spoke to the live chat people and she confirmed it was Full HD 1920x1080 Touch..

Took some screenshots etc, SO worst case if it isn't as advertised I'll just get a refund

    • good to know it is full hd, regarding to "it isn't as advertised", at least it will not look like the one in the pic. cos there is no way it come with a dvd drive. lol

  • How would this go as a photoshopping machine hooked up to a 27" dell monitor?
Will the built in graphics be enough?

I very occasionally need to go mobile.

    • +1

Pretty much any computer nowadays can handle photoshop just fine.

      • Yeah I was more wondering about it's on board graphics handling the 27" at its recommended 2560 x 1440 and possibly another slightly smaller monitor also.

I've never tried notebook or onboard graphics with shared memory using an external monitor (or two) so have no idea.
Got HDMI port but doesn't appear to be vga so not sure if 2 ext displays is possible anyway

  • +1

    Pulled the trigger. BANG!

    Thanks OP.

  • +1

    Thanks, just bought it

  • Thanks OP, bought one too. Good upgrade on my 5 year old aspire timeline X

  • Thank you. Great deal. Anything close to the $699 from JbHifi, Umart and the likes gets you 4GB Ram & 1366 x 768 resolution which is a little dodgy.

Not the lightest of laptops but I think its a good price. SSD next :)

    • I just bought a Samsung 850 250gb SSD from shopping express. If you're a new user and sign up to their spam you get $20 off when paying through paypal taking it down to $115 + 8.95 delivery.

      • just not sure about the os installation on the ssd. since this laptop does not come with any os media. just win 10 preinstalled. is it easy to do myself.

        • Samsung SSD comes with a migration software to migrate the OS from the original harddisk to SSD, as long as the original OS partition is not bigger than your new SSD.

        • +4

It can be daunting the first time you do it, but turns out it's pretty easy. Lots of guides online but effectively:

          1. Get a hard-drive docking station to slot the new SDD into (pick one up from MSY or online)
          2. Plug it into your new laptop
          3. Use Samsung's "magician" software (or any other) to clone a copy of the current HDD OS onto your SSD
          4. Take out the HDD and slot in your new SDD
          5. Enjoy your new fast and quiet laptop
        • +1

@pandaroogoo: sounds easy, i think i will try it

        • The laptop will come with a windows 10 product key stuck to the bottom of it. At least they used to…

You can do a clean install of Win 10 without any manufacturer bloat ware (if they are pre-installed such as McAffee junk).
The windows media can be found online (legally) and the key will be used to activate it.

Or follow the samsung magic software approach :)

        • @pandaroogoo: can you give me a link for the docking station you mentioned above. i did some search, but get confused. thanks. also the ssd is the 250gb ssd sata one? right

        • Something like this, just check that it's got its own power supply rather than being powered solely off USB port. One end goes in your drove the other is just USB.

          http://www.msy.com.au/pc-accessories/10297-cablelist-cl-u3id…

        • @ce5himm:
Here's the SSD that I bought, it's a 2.5" SSD as far as I can make out and they generally all fit into the slot of where the HDD was:
          http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/samsung-850-evo-250gb-…

This dock is the exact one that I have from MSY
          http://www.msy.com.au/peripherals/12105-astone-doc-130-2535-…

      • which one would fit this laptop, this one Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD SATA MZ-75E250BW ?

  • Anyone bought from microsoft store before and know the shipping time?

I'm prepared to pay the $8 for express shipping but sometimes standard is the same speed.

  • SO anyone can tell me if this is actually 1080p or just HD? The specification doesn't specify it properly

    • no one can tell, you can talk to MS online chat team. however, some of them do not know the difference between hd and full hd. some say it’s 1080p some say hd with 1080p no idea. guess have to wait until someone received it. anyway you can chhoose to return.

      • -2

HD is 720p , FULL HD is 1080p

        • +1

We know… But this laptops specs state both HD and 1920x1080 in the specs… Hence the confusion

  • +6

Just left the Microsoft store….didn't buy it. Can confirm it is a Full HD (1920x1080) touch screen (vibrant and bright enough, no comment on color accuracy), but it is a bit plastic and it flexes noticeably when picked up with one hand from one corner of the base. It has a rather large bezel and therefore is a pretty big laptop. You also feel the 2.45kg. I also found the touchpad to be a bit annoying, the pointer moving when I tried to click, this didn't happen with the XPS 13 and XPS 15 that was nearby.

It's a good deal spec/pricewise, I'm sure you will either be able to turn down the touchpad or get used to it, it wasn't for me and my GF (was considering it for her)

    • good to hear that. i will have a look, and if not happy, just ask for return.

  • Now $949 on the website

    • yep the sale price ended at 19:00 AEST…it was in the small print

  • +1

So I ordered mine around 8AM yesterday and my order still says "in process". Having paid extra for express shipping, I was hoping to get it before the weekend. Is anyone else in the same boat?

    • Mine still says processing too. Hopefully it does arrive tomorrow

  • Anyone got it delivered?

    • +1

Ordered mine on Tuesday night with standard delivery and got it delivered this morning in Melbourne. Can also confirm that the resolution is Full HD 1920x1080p.

      • Thanks for confirming this details. Is this laptop really worth for this price?

  • +1

I received it just now. The laptop feels so heavy!
