Vodafone Pre Paid Stick with 3GB Data for $3 @ Kmart

551

Was today in Moe to visit family. Browsing through the store i came across old stock of Vodafone k3571-Z modems. They are rubbish, fair enough but they come with 3GB of data for $3.- I am sure that is the cheapest mobile broadband you can get in Australia. The price should be nationwide but i can't say who has got stock.

Review of modem from 5 years ago - lacks any nifty extra features and it only supports download speeds of up to 3.2 megabits per second (Mbps).

Good for the data as there is no expiry date on Vodafone SIMs.

  • Can we use the sim's in iPad?

    • +2

Probably wrong size, but free to swap SIM at Vodafone shop, so yes.

      • thats the most important bit. to be able to swap for free.

        • I've taken many standard SIMs from similar Coles USB modem deals & swapped free to micro-SIM at Vodafone shops. I think only recent Vodafone SIMs are multi-fit.

I hope this is nation wide as you suggest it may be.

For this price I'm going wearing my Broden cap (don't worry, it's a country store unlikely to effect my fellow OzBargainer) :)

    • None in Albury NSW

  • im guessing its 3G?

    • the device should be 3G, but I believe if you put the SIM in a 4G compatible device you'd be able to use 4G

  • Does anyone know if this is nationwide yet? I need a cheapass throwaway modem.

    • +3

Unlikely there will be much stock anywhere. It's an old slow modem.

Really nothing wrong with this modem. Used mine over newer modems, as it's easy to bypass the software to use your own DUN software.
Just replace …\bin\MobileBroadband.exe with a 0kb text file (empty), so the 'orrible VF software doesn't startup. MDMA can be used to dialup, change APN and bands/freq from memory.

    No stock at Burwood VIC.

  • I am sure that is the cheapest mobile broadband you can get in Australia

Only if you don't include the various little tricks, such as the Telstra creditme2u glitch.

    • ??? Do share the secrets with us good sir.

      • I won't mention the method, it got fixed pretty quick last time anything was posted related to it, don't wanna risk having them fix this method too.
Good to see I'm not the only one who's sneakily still using this, it actually works out cheaper than the old method did, slightly slower though.

        • Requested collapsed as off-topic.

My discussion removed as had too many PM asking for details, and even attractive inducement to do so. I have said I am not comfortable doing so as it may affect other OzBargainers.

  • what's the product/stock code?

    • +1

I have uploaded the invoice with details.

  • Yea, bravo voda fone. 3G & equal to 5% of the value cumulated on any of my few telstra sims since industry glitch.
*Best prepaid plan - mostly data, some calls/SMS

  • well its better than usb modems were selling at $199 from Optus. I remember we bought the first usb modem stick from Optus in 2006 or 07 and it cost us that much! see how much electronics can really overcharge the average person! Electronics industry made huge profits back in those days.

  • Will it work if I take the simcard out and put it in Vodafone's pocket wifi device which I bought from here? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/206635

    • It's just a data SIM. Modem is unlocked, so any SIM will work if it is set up for data. So yes.

I've used them in my $40 4G Huawei Y550 phone I use just on 4G data. No need for pocket modems when phones are cheap & lighter.

I held out on that $39 deal & bought at $19 for modem & 11GB. But I don't need the data now. My 2 purchases are still waiting for pick up.

      • That deal was actually 16+3 not 8+3gb.

I say this because I'm at 15.8gb on my first one :)

        • +1

Yes, read the comments about that. Never collected to find out - must get refund. HN deal was officially for 3+8GB. Was a good deal for the data. Could sell the modems for about same price to get effectively free data ;-)

  • Called Pagewood store and they told me they have 3 Vodafone USB modems but price is $19 and they look newer like http://www.mobile2wifi.co.uk/images/Vodafone-K4201.jpg so do not appear to be the same older one.

I'd say most stores haven't stocked these for a few years.

  • No stock Launceston

    • +1

It never does. Devonport one always has an excess supply of stock though.

  • Thanks op! My store does have them except they didn't want to scan it.

  • Called up Brandon Park VIC. No stock.
    Chadstone VIC. No answer.
Might just stick to the the $10 Telstra $30 Pre-paid Starter SIMs. Still comes with 3GB, but has the benefit of $30 credit to use in Google Play.

    • That's where I'm headed next

  • Went to Kmart & all I found were Optus $2 data SIM for 5c each. Bought 2. Handy to port numbers between phone SIMs.

  • got to check this out tomorrow..

  • Has anyone actually found this in stock? Not much of a deal if the Op is the only one who can find it, yet so many positive votes.

Plan was to buy ten of them for mother in law and just cycle through each of them as the 3gb allowances were maxed out.

    • I think there would be reports of stock by now. 52 + votes means there is a lot of interest.

There have been a few Vodafone USB modem models since this 5 year old one, so unlikely stores would still stock these. Likely to have been stock found in store room & priced to clear at 1 store.

Seems another deal of [Unconfirmed Hopefulmess] - inadequate quantity to qualify as deal :-(

    • Found at Kmart Sylvania. Came up as $19, been told as store specific special.

      • The $19 one is current stock & probably a different model.

        • Same code as the invoice by OP

        • @googleyahoo69:
This deal was only for "old stock of Vodafone k3571-Z modems", as described in the deal description.

Image of this old modem in deal & in review link above - often only way to distinguish between models.

The current offered modem at $19 was pointed out not to be this model at start of deal, apparently the K4201, but possibly ZTE K4203 offered by Coles at $5, was $19.

Last year I bought the $9 K4203 & 3GB deal. So the old k3571-Z will be hard to find & not worth the search.

As I've warned elsewhere, the product code may be reused with different Vodafone USB modem models.

Vodafone bundles a modem plus separate SIM in the package. The modem & included credit changes over time, but the product code may not.

The packet surrounds the sealed box for the modem, which in this deal is the k3571-Z. But you can't tell which modem is included by looking at the packet, except possibly by the image of modem.

Current offering is for a better modem, not the 5 year old one here.

So doubt you found this rare old stock deal, rather newer model modem.

Best to read deal before negging!

        • @Infidel:

Agreed. Saw the "newer" modems in Kmart as per picture.

Negged remain. As unlikely availability of stock.

        • @googleyahoo69:
The small visual changes between modem models can be confusing.

I don't think anyone apart from the OP found stock :-(

          As I expected…
Another case of [UNCONFIRMED HOPEFULNESS] - inadequate quantity to qualify as deal :-(

  • None in Blacktown.

Got a Telstra Wifi hotspot instead for $15 with 2gb data on sale from $49. Will work well with the $10 starter kits

  • i have checked this in few KMar stores in WA but couldn't find anything similar from vodafone @ $3.

Any recommendations for other cheap wireless internet options?

  • 59 + votes when it seems only the OP found stock :-(
