Kim Dotcom has been charged with money laundering, copyright infringement and racketeering offences. Ray chan created 9gag, not exactly an intellectually stimulating site.

Regardless of both of the speakers pasts they have both made millions from successful online businesses. I am no associated with this business running this event (Freelancer) I just saw the deal $499 down to $249 with that url and thought I would share it on OzBargin for anyone looking to grow a online business and learn a bunch of tactics.

        Not associated?

If you're a freelancer hired to advertise the event, you are associated.

Just saw a good deal and thought I would share it, tough crowd on here.

Looks like Kim Dot Com has been replaced by Mark Bouris any way

        • Freelancer is the name of the company who runs Sydstart

    • Yeah you have to have a startup right and a business partner, then you probably have to go in the startup pitch stream

      • Id go through that to save $2 let alone the $249 you are advertising

        • Think you have to make a pitch on stage as well, maybe start a new thread with that if you want

        • +1

          @Connections:

Can I pitch my new compression algorithm? I use a new 'middle out' strategy and score pretty highly on the "Weismann" scale

        • @SBOB:
Did you come up with this idea whilst listening to your friends debate how much data they could manipulate in a set time frame. tip to tip

        • @SBOB:

It's like clickbait but in real life!

  • SPAM

How is Kim Dot Com going to get into australia with his criminal convictions?

    • Looks like Kim Dot Com has been replaced by Mark Bouris

How is this spam its a 50% offer, sorry if the deals not good enough

      • What if next year it's $1000 so 50% off =$500=deal???

      • +1

it should be free just like CeBIT is, i normally goto these things to collect pens and lollies

        • You mean an Expo pass?

        • lol u did that too :)

        • @deallover15:
always, same with the food expo's

      • +2

If "50% off" = "bargain" , then we would see every single "deals" from groupon, scoopon, dealsdirect, dealextreme, catchoftheday, shop-a-docket etc here everyday.

We don't care about how much your prediscounted price is. We care about value for money. Free stuff are sometimes categorised as spam because they are worthless or used to collected database or to generate traffic to sites.

If OzB thinks this event doesn't worth 249,then it doesn't.

Gees, that's quite a hike from last year…

    • Last year was only 1 day this year is two days + far higher quality international speakers + larger venue ect

  • Ruslan Kogan is not speaking so forget about it.

    • Ruslan is a good speaker saw him at two events! They have his CTO speaking good to get a different perspective.

      • Ruslan is a rip off merchant, he resells cheap TV's and tries to promote them as premium TV's

  • You shouldn't use the "Associated" tag unless you are actually associated with the seller.

Yep. I am personally involved in the startup industry… am disappointed with the inclusion of Kim DotCom and Ray Chan as headline speakers in this event. These sorts of people have no place in our future economy, and they are not people to aspire to be. It doesn't matter that Kim has just been replaced… the fact he was considered at all is a red flag… its shameful.

    • Sorry I do not usually use this site, shared a deal and people are very negative here.

Agree Kim Dot Com is an interesting choice, though I think Ray Chan could have some good tips on startup growth right?

      • In my experience, people on OzBargain are "opportunistic" buyers; they are looking for great purchases. Things like conferences, holidays, surveys, etc. are just not going to do down well on this site, because they are asking for more than a quick PayPal transaction; they are asking for people to commit their time.

SydStart is under new management this year… and their marketing has been extremely aggressive. I definitely appreciated Pete Cooper's more laid back community-focused approach to the event.

  • Sydstart under Freelancer has definitely been pretty aggressive this year. I have been receiving spams emails advertising discounted tickets for a few months already. I suspect due to higher ticket price this year, they might not actually fill up the quota.

Now I feel bad for those who have purchased upfront.

I did attend Sydstart a few years ago (2012) — something like $35 although that's still a bit rich as I usually just go to those conferences for freebies. As of startups, well, I got to talked to a few startups that have stalls and pitched and are related to retail/online shopping. None of them are still around today, unfortunately.

    • +1

Yeah. There is enough money in the investment and vulture capital industry (or companies like Amazon, Google and Microsoft) that events like SydStart should be funded primarily through sponsorships.
Most start up founders can't rub together two coins, let alone pay $499 or $249 for something they can found often for free on sites like Meetup.com

  • I cant say much about the other speakers, but from my perspective, Oli Gardner (from Unbounce.com ?) would be very interesting to hear speak. I've found his insights into lead conversion (especially Form design) to be excellent.

    • but for $249?

      • Business expense…

        • Startup…
