must resist the urge, after getting 2 for free from work…, oddly I'm still very tempted by the deal - and i havent found a use for the last two yet!

    • Mind sparing one for a student in desperate need?

      • just get one of the above for 232 you cant go wrong!
        its basically the same ones.

  • Only one left of that i7, someone be quick :)

Edit: wow this place has some scathing feedback

    • Ordered the i7 at $240, went through PayPal so figured I didn't have much to lose as I could raise a case through them.

Order was cancelled due to no stock. Mysteriously this popped up right after wwith 5+ stock at $499.. http://www.megabuy.com.au/ex-gov-dell-optiplex-980-i7-860870…

        Sons of bitches.

        • Go-Go-Fair-Trading!

        • @Nametab:

And now they told NSW Fair Trading and said that it was a 'pricing error', not 'no stock due to overselling'.

Fair Trading rep said that 'they only had a few complaints about Megabuy, and even though there is lots of negative customer feedback about the company online, it's not enough to investigate further'.

          Absolutely pathetic.

how about macca's smell and residuals on it?

      • I reckon that you don't buy second hand stuff. Otherwise, the list would be bigger. Do you reckon it might have a mark like the ”book that was in the toilet” in Seinfeld?

        • yeap, i didn't manage to get 2nd hand macca's smell and residuals, but hungry jacks…..

      I admire your persistence.

I have always bought from Megabuy and never had a problem before. I guess experiences differ just like with any other consumer technology e-commerce websites.

      • +12

Glad you hear you haven't suffered as others have. If there were more satisfied customers like yourself then there would be no need for people like me to post warnings like this.

I agree that experiences will differ and it's not just limited to consumer technology. I'm also aware that no matter how good a company's service is there will always be the PITA customers who don't understand what they're buying or expect something for nothing and will whinge and whine if they don't get it.

In this case, reviews of customers' experiences with megabuy is overwhelmingly negative.

I'm sure you understand but if not, my vote is for the company not your deal.

      • I've used them once for an emergency purchase, worked out fine, no issues so far. Umart (basically across the road in Chermside) is usually cheaper tho, and where I would normally go.

    • Unbelievably negative Product Reviews

      Review rating:

      Excellent 18
      Good 9
      OK 3
      Bad 13
      Terrible 114

  • What are the screen resolutions on those old laptops? Sorry I'm a bit lazy to check old specs and wonder if maybe they have different options on these laptops aimed at enterprise users/customers.

Most have 1366x768 which should be good enough for 12 and 14 inch ones.

    One recent review from Whirlpool

They are liars, cheats, arrogant, rude and abusive who have no idea what service is.

We have sent them more than 20 emails, called them more than 20 times and been lied to on every occasion.

We spoke to their freight company and we confirmed a number of lies they had told us in their attempts to avoid repaying us or delivering the products we paid for.

Do not take the risk, pay a higher price and go somewhere else, I assure you if you purchase from these people your chances of successfully having them fullfill on your expectations as a customer paying them money to supply you goods will be disappointing.

They need to be closed down……..

While I worry about someone that constantly negs their deals (however valid), it's really alarming to have a business almost quote you consumer laws about warranty processes…

      • +2

Go onto whirlpool and read the reviews. You will neg the deal yourself

Those are genuinely good laptops - I'd recommend pumping to 8gb of ram and adding an SSD to them.
Also they are BUSINESS laptops, that means NO IDIOT GLOSSY SCREEN

Disclaimer: I did a lot of Govt desktop support in the last 10 years - they are likely good laptops for your friends / family or even yourself, only minor disadvantage is they may not have USB3 / HDMI that kinda stuff as it'll be at least an 18 month old chipset in a business model. (if not 24 months)

    • +1

Oh: be warned that 2560p comes with a 160gb SSD, I'd wager it's an intel G2 original, still not a bad SSD but also probably NOT a 2.5" one - they made some custom, TINY SSD's for the 2540 series.
I know the 2570 series returned to 2.5" HDD's - but that might be hella proprietary little hard disk in the 2560p, which would be SUPER expensive to replace. google it before buying.

      • 2560p onwards returned to normal 2.5" HDDs.

      • Its either msata or microsata from memory

    • +1

That's right, with a SSD, these things should fly. I did see a few USB3 ones though, on the 3rd Gen CPU models.

    alternatively:
plenty of laptops available on ebay, so take advantage of spend $200, get $100 voucher.

examples (not by any means recommendations):
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321668177833 effectively becomes $180
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321603321773 effectively becomes $199

    • +4

It's not effectively those prices you mentioned because you still have to spend at least $100 more on your next purchase which will then be free. So you're still effectively spending $280 / $299. And unless you sell the $100 worth of crap that you buy next for exactly $100 then no, don't mislead people into thinking they're spending less. Be that as it may, purchasing on ebay is a better deal than megabuy simply for the voucher (and cashrewards / shopandmint cashback).

  • Second hand laptops = stuffed batteries. If you're willing to fork out for a better battery, or you just want something to use around the house then you'll be ok, but expect that the current batteries will probably only have half capacity.

    • +1

I've had a lot of success buying replacement laptop batteries on ebay in the past, so you could just budget an extra $30-$50 in case you need one.

Also, you can often get a replacement keyboard for less than $20, that can be replaced with a screwdriver and a youtube video. A great idea with all the germs that live in a used laptop.

  • Just came back from holiday and was looking for a laptop for my dad and saw a couple that suit. Waited for him to come over to show only to my surprise that the price of the few that I was looking at had doubled and tripled. What's going on?

    • +1

don't even bother, a friend of mine don't listen to me & tried to place an order with them, now the order cancelled & price doubled!

megabuy are bunch of liars & sometime you have to chase them up for the refund which could be months!
