    • Put in an email address and try again
      Doesn't work for appliances

      • Thanks, my mistake.

  • I heard they going bankrupt and woolies are gonna sell them off

    • Their bargain corner offer 10% off RPP on those over stock and over priced things.

    • +1

I suspect masters profits will skyrocket once Woolworths sell them off LOL

      • +1

Maybe if Anchorage buys them out and manages to pull another DSE miracle

      • Not if they decide to sell its assets separately - Bunnings apparently have their eyes on 5 of Masters' current sites.

  • Just put in an email address and try again

  • Yep, what's the exclusions? Looks like doesn't include appliances from what I could tell.

And yes, need to be logged in to use it. Worked fine on a test order for a toolbox

    • pretty much this ^

looks like appliances are on the exclusion list but it works with any email address once you put it in

  • Apparently you have to complete a survey of your recent purchase from the masters. I've received an email this morning and completed a survey then it will work for your next purchase.

    • I did to get the code but it is generic and will work for anybody
Just need to put in a email address and the discount will apply (you do not have to complete the survey for the code to work)

  • +1

I reckon just wait for the fire sale when Woollies sells up.

  • :( got me excited. Doesn't work on Dyson!

    • +1

yeah would've been pretty sweet if it stacked with the current dyson sale

      • Hahaha, oh well. Nice deal though! :)

NEED NEXT SALE ON DYSON! I promise this time I will not hesitate. Missed out TGG eBay sale that had dyson on sale too, still kicking myself over it.

  • I got the same code for a survey. What I would be interested in: can the code be used multiple times on the same account? 30 days is long, a couple of new catalogues will start during that time.

As a more general question: those who are so negative about the future of Masters, how come? Do you work for Bunnings? Do you think less competition is a good thing?

Masters has lots of problems. But I really hope they sort those out rather than just giving up. Right now I for my part enjoy that I can get basically everything for 15% less than at extortion-price-Bunnings. Masters stores are not as drafty and dusty. The toilets are very nice too: new, large and clean. Lots of positives.

If they manage to properly train and motivate their staff and re-arrange items in a more logical way Masters can become be my favourite hardware store for sure.

    • like someone said in another topic
to go to masters I need to drive past a few bunnings to get to one….

no problems with going to masters, but just the petrol to get there makes the discounts not worth it

      • then people complain that they are spending too much money. It is kind of lose-lose in a way. Personally I hope they stick with it, analysts predicting it will take 5 years to generate a profit shows that something is being done right

        • The 5-year prediction shows that something is seriously wrong. The JV has run for 6 years already, and has failed to generate a profit. Woolies and Lowes didn't fund a $3.07 million joint venture so that it can generate losses for 11 years in a row (~$245 million loss in FY2015).

        • @Eivad:

          hang on……..JV?

          JV on OZBARGAIN.COM.AU!!!!???

        • @davidl2: JV - Joint Venture (Woolworths & Lowes)

    • why are u so positive about the future of masters? do you work for them?

have a look at the masters locations in syd compared to bunnings
for anyone living in the south, east or inner west, you have to travel a long way to get to a masters, bunnings are everywhere

      • +9

No, I don't work for a hardware retailer. But I really despise Bunnings.

They advertise "Nobody beats our prices", but in fact the only items that they don't get beaten on most of the time are the 80% of items that are exclusive to Bunnings (by using their market power to get a slightly different size or just a different barcode printed for Bunnings stock).

When you try to get a price match on one of the few items that are actually available elsewhere they give you a very hard time. I'd call that dishonest behaviour of a near monopolist. Same reason I didn't like Microsoft when they still mattered.

With Masters: they don't have enough stores to be as close to many people, sure. But in order to survive and even thrive they only need to draw in the people who actually live close to one. Not all locations are crappy (though some certainly are).

I don't think Masters is anywhere near 'out of the woods' yet. But there are some encouraging signs and as a consumer who wants competition in the hardware sector I wish them all the best.

        • completion would be nice but their strategy has been terrible
          pretty sure they are gonnnnne

they really should have acquire some smaller players. and tried to expand from there, get some good locations

they targeted the greater western Sydney but most of those people are fully sold on bunnings

      • Bunnings:

        • "Lowest prices are just the beginning" is a blatant lie. Nearly every time I want something, I can buy it cheaper elsewhere.

        • Their near monopoly is forcing the prices up for everyone. Shopping around is how you get better competition and better prices.

        • Much of their cheap range is utter garbage. Masters cheap range (Cobalt etc) is much better quality.

        • Most of the time when i'm after something specific, they are out of stock. I go back a week later, they're still out of stock. Not obscure stuff either - high volume movers like stormwater fittings etc.

        • Trade area staff (in my experience) act like you're a giant hassle to them.

        • They often only have a couple of checkouts open in those really quiet times (you know, like Saturday morning).

        I could go on.

Masters needs a lot of improvement, but if they fail it is bad for everyone (except Bunnings obviously).

    • People are negative about the future of Masters as it has consistently failed to generate any profits since picked up by the Woolworths-Lowes JV six years ago. It's only a matter of time before Woolworths and Lowes stop pumping cash into a business that consistently generates losses, quarter after quarter.

As of today Lowes' put option has become exercisable, and everyone is waiting to see whether and when Lowes will exercise the option and force Woolworths to buy up their one third stake. If this happens, market speculation is that Woolworths will be forced to put Masters up for sale which, hopefully, will be sold as a whole to some PE firm rather than a fire-sale of its assets to Bunnings / other companies.

Don't get me wrong, I love Masters - they have fantastic prices and a great alternative to overpriced Bunnings. It's just that financially it doesn't make sense for Woolies to keep pumping cash into a business that has not returned any profits and is not forecasted to break even in the near future.

That's the question really, do they think of the next few quarters or in the long term.

What I wonder is why it takes so long to fix some of the teething issues.

  • and even after 10% flyrscreen frames are still cheaper at bunnings… might as well get them to 10% price match… but so much effort for a couple of bux in savings.

  • 10% after 10%.

    • Yes, combine that with discounted wish gift cards and CashRewards and they are certainly worth a detour for someone addicted to bargains like me…

      • is there any current deals for discounted wish gift cards?

        • Cashrewards, always 5% off. No membership fee (unlike Entertainment book).

        • @team teri:
oh damn you're right, i couldn't find it and thought it had expired :(

        • @lemoo: Yes, it's surprising that a search for 'wish' does not show it. Searching for 'woolworths' does.

        • @team teri: yeah that's kinda counter intuitive. i've always searched for wish and it never came up so I just assumed the offer had expired sigh

"Terrible strategy" and "pretty sure they are gonnnnne"? Maybe, but this is not what I see. I often drive past a new huge Masters complex, a few minutes down the road from large Bunnings in Penrith, NSW. The new Masters place is almost completed, large signs "Opening Soon". Looks pretty impressive, and serves very busy Penrith area. Bunnings is clearly concerned, as they started large work on modernizing their old Penrith shop down the road (coincidence? I do not think so!). I am waiting for opening day bargains! If you are nearby, check: Masters, OPENING SOON Penrith, 72-82 Mulgoa Road (and no, I do not work for Masters).

    • Update: maybe I should be a bit less enthusiastic:
      http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/companies/bunnings-…

PS: I just re-checked the above link: sometimes it opens the article, BUT sometimes gives "only subscribes can access this contents". I do not understand why it is so. Here is a short extract from the article (dated: OCTOBER 21, 2015) in case you can not access it:

"Bunnings is understood to have a hit-list of 15 sites owned by archrival Masters that it would be eager to buy if Woolworths decides to pull the plug on its loss-making hardware venture and trigger a fire sale of its stock and land holdings.

And the chance for Bunnings to cherry-pick some of the best big-box retail sites in Sydney and Melbourne could come quickly, with Woolworths’ joint venture partner in its struggling Masters chain, US hardware group Lowe’s, able to exercise a put option to dump its one-third stake from this morning.

An unappealing store format, poor product range and ill-conceived marketing and pricing strategies have hampered Masters since it opened its first store in Victoria in 2011, generating a heavy earnings drag on the accounts of both Lowe’s and Woolworths".

      …and so it goes.
