If you haven't been to Basfoods, then get over there. It's a mix between a Mediterranean shop you'd find on Sydney Road and Costco. They sell quite a few things cheaper than other retailers. Go on the weekend at lunchtime and they'll usually have enough samples to fill you up. This week's specials:

Product Price

Pasha Greek Style Yogurt $2.99
La dolce vita Aborio Rice 1KG $2.99
Rf special white 00 flour 10KG $8.99

  • In Carnegie we get brown onions for $4 to $6 for 10kg bag all year round. $3 is a good bargain. Vic market is obviously not what it used to be for price.
If it wasn't so far away I'd go for samples and good prices.

There's also a Basfoods at 26-28 Somerton Road, Somerton Vic 3062. For AMEX cardholders it's worth noting that in the past Basfoods has been on the 'Shop-Small' list; so if you register your card/s with Shop-Small this November you could buy $20 worth of stuff at each of the two Basfoods outlets for $10, per card.

  • Is coffee mio any good?

  • Are Leb cucumbers the ones that come from Lebanon to live here but then are met with people too lazy to say their name? I think I know a couple of those cucumbers.

  • Went past this yesterday and wondered if it is any good so will check it out next time in the area. Thanks for the info

  • The butcher next door also has good deals from time to time. It's where I usually get my meat from.

Good prices but no pork products, deli meat etc.

      • Yep. The best deli with a mix of quality/price is the IGA on sydney road. Theres some more good ones, but the they get pricey.

'The best deli with a mix of quality/price is the IGA on sydney road.'

I beg to differ. The cheapest deli on Sydney Road is actually a joint called 'KFL' (378 Sydney Rd, Coburg VIC 3058); and because I've been buying stuff from there for years and have never had any issue with quality, I'd say that's the 'best' one. [a-religious / stocks pork products]

For a laugh, check out the smallish sign hand-written in felt-tip pen (badly) in the window that reads 'cheapest deli prices on Sydney Road'. It's true too; I'm talking kalamata olives for $7 a kilo, semi-SD tomatoes for $15 or less, etc. Strictly placky bags only though, no containers, so don't go there expecting one! BYO container maybe? Anyways, if you're not fussy about 'speedy service' (they can take a while to get to you at the deli) I advise you to try this joint.

Also, they were on the AMEX 'Shop Small' list last year which meant I broke many 'all-time-low' price records for deli-stuff … half-price at a joint that's already one of the cheapest in town works out to be pretty amazing…

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: I never said it was the cheapest. That KFL either smells like hot ass or bleach. All i get from there is sriracha.

        • @thedude23:
Lol, yeah it's not what you'd call 'boutique'… the stuff from the deli is surprisingly good given the price though; and I like the smell of bleach!
