  • I see, but how is this a bargain? I just do not see a markdown.

Can it really run ok on 512mb ram?

      I wouldn't risk it!

    • It's not Android.
      WP is fine with 512MB.

      • WP is fine with 512MB if you only read emails or surf the web and don't mind tabs re-loading. If you use a variety of apps or you're browsing the web via 3G/4G, you will be smashed using 512MB. So, for the most basic user, 512MB is enough. For anyone else, it is not.

the catch is finding sufficient apps on WP to use up all that amount of ram.

    • It'll run fine for most applications (ie. from memory offline-> maps, pdfs etc on the lumia 530 ran decently smooth).
The tiny resolution is probably the reason why it runs ok on 512mb ram.

Also you cant really compare android and its crazy ram hogging abilities to a windows phone.
Going from nexus 4 (2gb ram) to lumia 830 (1gb ram), I can say maps, pdfs, videos, web browsing etc runs just as smooth as on nexus 4 (if not better). Your problem will just be finding a decent apps to do anything :P.

TLDR; You can't really compare android ram usage to windows phone ram usage. Your biggest problem is being able to find any apps that makes the phone do what you want.
Just look up a youtube review is probably best way.

No. I have the 1gb model from the $55 AT&T deal a while back, and it's rubbish slow (on both 8.1 and 10).
Navigating around the phone is painfully slow, and even the MS apps lag and freeze constantly.

Unless you're desperate for any kind of phone right now, I would save your money.

      • Can't say I had the same problems on my Lumia 830 (or even Lumia 530), other then yes, some 3rd party apps do crash occasionally, some even crash as soon as you open. (Also the light bleed on the Lumia 530 was horrible).
But the stock apps have been stable.

On the other hand my Nexus 4 was constantly crashing, freezing, laggy, and to top it off an update or something broke the digitiser causing a permanent dead zone through the centre of the screen (google it).
Downgrading, factory reset, flashing from factory image etc only temporarily solves the software problem. Deadzone remains :(.
Similar experiences for my cousin on the Nexus 5, whom he recently gave up to return to iOS. (The last straw was apparently the google map app crashing when he was navigating lol.)

        I guess everyone's experiences will vary…

Also as Mister Plod stated, "Unless you're desperate for any kind of phone right now, I would save your money.".

I got mine from the at&t deal also - I quite like it. If you just use a prepaid sim for incoming calls it's pretty much perfect IMO.

Big feature is the maps that download to the phone - with the running app you can do all your runs while never needing data (or mobile reception).

Plus you can take it fishing and not care what happens to it.

Well I'm glad it's working for you guys at least :)
I bought mine cause I'd never used a windows phone before, and it was cheap/had good reviews.
After unlocking it, I attempted to use it as my main phone for a while; which as per my angry rant above, did not go so well.

For the most part, I think coming from android it was a pretty huge disappointment in terms of app availability and quality.
That said, it does work; though more as a basic phone for messages, calls, and maaaaybe email if outlook wasn't so slow.

As for android's offerings: both the Huawei Y550 4G and the ZTE Fit 4G can be had for $50-$70 kinda regularly around here, and IMO, provide a much better experience in almost every way over windows phone.

But meh, everyone has different needs and wants or whatever… No one has to agree with or listen to me!

        • What? using it as a sinker?

        • @Mister Plod:

Having no way to block annoying ads on browser is a big neg for me with wp. I would rather get the fit just on that basis alone. No flash on camera with this phone is another neg for me too.

        • @Ronnnie:

One of the downsides is not being able to block data on a per app basis.. it seems to leak data when 3G enabled.

I use it mainly as a phone and a mp3/running/maps tool & an ipad mini for the rest.

        • @gringo: right about leaking data, and no way to stop.

  • It'll run fine on current 8.1, but I doubt on 10 it'll be good.

  • was the same price with a bluetooth nokia speaker at Coles the other week.
