Paying for an EPG is ridiculous.

    Free, high quality EPG: http://svn.whuffy.com/

    • agreed , thanks for the link

yeah, but that is definatley not for everyone.
i spent months trying to get it work where i live - north west nsw, and it would not.
the only option was for a service like icetv.
they are great - reliable and no hassles.
icetv prob not for everyone, but useful for some!

Fair point, but I would never class icetv a bargain, even with $30 off, it's still extremely over priced for a simple xml feed. And it's not that tricky for anyone with basic Linux experience.

I'm asking for a flaming here, but I have to say paying for IceTV was what swung me to Tivo - and the fact that Tivo just works.

I may regret it when Tivo introduce ads to their EPG or a subscription fee.

TIVO is good if you just want a basic PVR, but does not compare to a HTPC. Each to their own.

  • Last year I got an IceTV yearly subsctiption for $50 which was a pretty good deal at the time.
I will gladly pay for another year at this price - its hard to go back with all the features that are included.
They are always upgrading features and adding new stuff (and no i dont work for them) :P

  • What's the advantages of using icetv compared to the OTA guide that works in Windows 7 Media Center?

    • Apparently higher quality descriptions etc as they are all hand written by monkeys at iceTV. However, the OTA epgs are pretty good since the Freeview campaign, iceTV is pointless imo.

O and remote recording scheduling, but of-course you could do that with rdp for free.

  • My Ice guide was never accurate especially with the HD Channels and they took ages to add guide data for the new freeview channels. There are plenty of better free epgs out there

  • I renewed for $49 in Dec.. not a bargain at $69 IMO.

  • i have a working install of shepherd free to air for sydney which updates at 5pm every day.
email me if you have somewhere you want me to upload it to every day. (ftp would be easiest. its about 2mb)

  • Its still a bargain, you cant say its not a bargain just because you dont want the service, I love IceTV and it works very well for what I want with my Topfield HD7100PVR.

I see a lot of so called bargains that save someone a dollar or 2 :\

I also renewed in july 09 for $49 but I dont mind adding another year.

    • You can say its not a bargain if theirs cheaper (free_ alternatives out their that are better.

  • -1

Bet you can't do this with the other alternatives. IceTV is great.

    • RDP into the box and schedule the show directly. And yes, that can be done via iPhone.

      • Agreed…the iceTV app would be easier and look better though.

  • Why would you pay for something that's free, already? It's pretty much the polar opposite of a bargain.
