  • Might seem like a stupid question, but I'm sure someone will tell me - what good is the HDMI output when DVD isn't Hi-Def? Does it have inputs or other functionality we don't know about here?

    • +1

Pretty sure just about all DVD players with HDMI output upscales the resolution of the DVD so that it looks better when using HDMI, as it can carry higher resolutions than the standard red/white/yellow cables. Also cleans up the cabling at the back a little bit if you're into a cleaner look.

Good price for a generic DVD player at a store with a good return policy.

      • Exactly

      • cheers.
you're right, rice is good anyway, and point taken with cable quality and tidiness, but I thought "upscaling" was simply another term for "zoom". i.e. no real increase in quality, simply the device taking a guess at what the tv should use to fill the missing lines?

      • I doubt that the upscaling algorithm of a cheap DVD player would compete with the same feature of an expensive high-def TV.

        • Dunno about this one but you'd be surprised how well upscaling on some generic brands perform.

          • @McMerc: By all means use the HDMI out for a digital connection between player and HDTV. But I have a cheap LG DVD player that, with upscaling enabled, produced a lower quality picture than when it was disabled when displayed onto a 22" Samsung via component cables.

Edit: oops, disregard the example, it was progressive output, not upscaling.

    • I would expect HDMI dvd players to be significantly better simply because you are using a digital connection instead of an analog one, upscaling or no upscaling.

Dont forget that HDMI also carries HD audio. As far as upscaling though I've read that an $X000 tv will do a better job anyway than a $100 DVD player, so it's best to just get Blu-ray. I don't know all the ins and outs of picture quality, but as far as I know, either this DVD player will 'stretch' the picture, or your TV will. I also read that upscaling DVD players are just something they came out with to get people to replace their old ones.

At $25 though this is a good deal.

  • I guess you mean by generic that it doesn't play DIVX files?

  • What state are you in? And do you have any more info about this 2 day sale?

    • was available Australia-wide. Not much other info sorry - I was only walking through Myer with no interest of purchasing etc

just bought one, it's divx capable and looks nice too.

  • Just had a look,

Has optical out and HDMI out but specifically states 2.0 channel dvd player on the rear so not sure if it will put out 5.1?

No mention of divx capability on box either can someone else comfirm?

    • Didn't buy one but was led to believe its DicX capable. omygodde seems to confirm so.

    • I haven't actually tried it yet but there is a DIVX logo on my machine, could be just for cosmetic purpose.

  • i saw one today at sydney central myer and couldnt find anywhere on the box that mentioned divX playback, that wouldve sold me but it was not there unless someone can confirm this.

shame if it had it coz i woulda missed out.

Ok I just hooked it up using component and ran a little test myself.
It IS DIVX capable but it's not mentioned on the box nor the machine. I've tried with several AVI files I have (movies) and it seems to read them all.
It is also a Multi-zone DVD player despite that the region 4 logo is showing on the box, I have tried with zone 2, 3 and 4 DVDs and all played flawlessly. And output quality is perfect on my TV.
The cable it came with wasn't very good though (has some noise), just use your HDMI or component cables and you should be able to get a perfect picture.
The remote is solid and functional. not flimsy like some of the cheapo DVD.

I reckon at $25 it's a VERY VERY GOOD BUY, even at $50 I would still recommend it to my friends.

    • Now I want one but alas it too late :(

  • Is it the MVM dvd player?
I checked Myer at Macquarie Centre & couldn't find any others except the MVM at $49.95 I price checked to see if it was 50% off, no it wasn't.

    • Yep, offer finished yesterday mate. Offer was only valid for Fri and Sat

  • went today, the offer was only for 2 day special - ended 16/1

It was a good offer though

  • That's odd as i picked one up yesterday (Sunday the 17th) at the Myer in Queen st in Brisbane for $22.50 with my 10% staff discount.

  • wooo! just price matched a panasonic blu ray player at my local!

  • I just called a few local stores after reading Twizzo's comment and it seems that whilst the sale has officially ended some stores (maybe all) are still selling it at $24.95. Knox in VIC said it was back to $49.95 but the guy I spoke to at Forest Hill in VIC actually scanned it and it was still at the lower price. I went in and there was a sign up for $49.95 but sure enough it scanned at $24.95 and they had about 30 in stock. Worth ringing your local stores to see how much it is there but make sure they scan it!

    • As at lunchtime Monday 18 Jan, Canberra Centre Myer still had 50% off sale for MVM dvd players and set top boxes. Didnt check out how much the set top boxes were, but they had around 30 DVD players piled up right in front of the sales counter.

The DVD player has been on/off the 50% sale ever since Xmas, so if you really wanted one and it wasn't on sale at your local store, just ask them to drop price, more than likely they will.

  • wow, the myers I went to didn't budge.

I might check out the city centre then in that case.
