I hate luggage scales with hooks. I once almost took my eye out with one. Avoid. Spent an extra $4 and get a digital scale with a clip.

    • Going to listen to your advice and get a digital one.

    • Agreed, lesson learnt as well.. get a digital one off ebay with a strap.

  • Should I get one of these for my trip back from Japan (Jetstar free return special :D).

Bought 25kg return checked in baggage — might come in useful.

    • lucky you. i missed the deal:(

I bought scales like these for $1.60 at a Pound Shop, thinking I would use them in my travels. Never have. It's just extra weight on flights there & back.

I am regular frugal (carryon only) flyer & have recorded weights of what I take (usually marked on item). (I use a quite accurate $5 digital kitchen scale at home for most individual items.) So the only things to weigh are the extra items you are bringing back.

It then takes a few minutes calculation to work out if you are overweight:
Weight of bag taken on trip - known weight of what is not returning + measured weight of new items = return weight.

A photo on phone / camera of items in bag is handy when repacking, and if bag goes missing

Gave some tips for frugal Japan travel including Many accommodation have scales if you ask. Airports in Japan provide scales, so best to check before checking in.

Most bathroom scales usually available at accommodation have good enough accuracy. Reception usually has accurate scale for smaller items - used for postage etc. Post Offices have scales if all else fails.

Keep a few item at top of bag that can easily be removed & stuffed in pockets etc if bag is a bit heavy when checked at airport courtesy scales. They provide a handy repacking area beside scales.

      Happy holidays :-)

    • Just get a digital one off ebay with a clip. I've been using one for years and they're absolute budget savers. Weight it before you leave for the airport. Repack/throw out stuff and then you don't have to worry about it when you're there.

I don't go away without mine now.

    Does this take batteries?

    • the measure tape?

  • Link not working. Did they delete this item?

    • Update: Okay I tried this again this morning and it works now. Weird. So apparently this deal is still available.

  • I had one of these in my hand luggage, after having weighed my checked luggage, and the customs nazi in Dubai said the metal tape measure was a dangerous weapon and cut it off!

Get one of the digital scales without the tape measure.

  • Has only just shipped, we fly out Friday lol

  • Finally got mine today. It's rusty and the measuring tape doesn't seem to retract. Pretty tacky. Should've kept my $3 I think.
