Here's a video that gives an interesting insight into an aspect of Japanese cultural you will encounter… the Konbini (7-11, Lawson, etc) is very important.
          Japanese convenience store song video
Or Google konbini store song if that fails to load.

    Tips for the frugal traveller…

    From a sole FFFF* traveler
(*Frugal Fatish Foreigner in his umm Fifties, with more time than money I am willing to spend)

Bought the cheapest flight ($249 return from Cairns) with no extras, not even baggage. More spending money when I arrive ;-)

Having flown from Gold Coast or Cairns to Japan many times on Jetstar, I bring on food & sleep through the flight. Eye shade, ear plugs, & comfy clothes are travel essentials for a good rest.

Blanket & pillow are replaced by layers of clothes worn on & things like thermal underwear (always handy in cooler areas), towel, etc rolled (or stuffed in small bag) into comfy headrest.

Dreamliners have USB port for charging & playing music from USB stick. Basic earpiece provided.

(Qantas code share passengers receive a complimentary pack of blanket, eyeshades, etc. They usually leave these behind. I sometimes pick up a blanket at the end of the flight. No harm in asking passenger.)

Not booking a seat & checking in later usually pays off for a sole traveller. Often get the premium economy seats others don't want to pay extra for or a row of seats :-) That solves leg room for me.

As for baggage, after over a decade of budget overseas travels up to 9 months per year, I've found 7kg for 4-6 weeks is enough for me, & 10kg for 3 months. That won't suit many! As I previously commented, I sometimes bring 3.5kg of tent & camping gear in that (previously 10kg) allowance.

My standard travel kit including pack, charger, 1 spare pair of shoes, thermals & clothes plus Japan essentials of spa towel & souvenir koalas - weighs under 3kg. Bringing sets of 3 of most clothes, 2 of most plus a warm jacket & cap/hat will be worn on, leaving little to pack. That's the basics I take. Deep & plentiful pockets are very handy. Tablet, phone, food bars, etc fits in easily.

Bringing things back is a different matter. Many accommodation have scales if you ask. Airports in Japan provide scales, so best to check before checking in.

Last 2 trips I have packed my carryon to the limit & worn almost all my clothes with pockets overflowing. I brought back so many old kimono, which I wore. Counter staff (not Jetstar in Japan) were concerned I would be too hot when I arrived back to Cooloongatta ;-)

Just have to organise a cheap trip Brisbane-Cairns in the next 6 months. Couchsurfing.com often has lifts. Have swapped being an "Aussie guide" to overseas travellers before for free trips in Australia, accommodation, food & too much alcohol ;-)

Can't wait for the adventure to begin!

    • I wonder why anyone would neg money saving travel experience? It's not for everyone, but worked for me over many trips to Japan.
Saving money is not popular on OzBargain anymore? Oh well:-)
      Enough from me.

  • Looks like they are all sold out for melb to tokyo? cant seem to find any dates with the return for free.

    • same for sydney too, i think, been searching around but nothing :<

    • Cairns still has $249 return flights… it's just the time & expense of getting to Cairns :-(
(Tigerair may have cheap flights sometime?)

    • There are still return flights in November and December (After Uni exams finish XD), I booked mine a couple hours ago.

  • looks like it's all gone :( sydney to tokyo..

  • Not sure if this has been stated before, but it looks like that for the travel period stated, the start date is not the earliest date of departure, it is (one day before) the earliest free return date. So you can actually depart earlier than this period, & still get the free return. Hope that makes sense. For example,

Gold Coast / Tokyo states travel period to be 13 Mar 2016 - 05 May 2016
Return free from 14 March, but travel out any day you choose. I came up with the following,
    OOL-NRT 26/02/16 10:30-18:30 $459 (unfortunately there's no $349 departures around these dates)
    NRT-OOL 14/03/2016 20:25-06:25 FREE

This heads up could be very useful for skiers/snowboarders, who want to travel closer to mid-winter. Or for anyone who wants to head out a little bit before the stated travel period.

  • Hotels very expensive in Tokyo and not much choice either

    • I really wanted to stay in Shibuya or Shinjuku and place has to be in walking distance to the JR Yamanote line, just a personal preference. Secured a place via airbnb for around $90 a night. I have used airbnb in Asia and Europe before and so far no issues

Lots of decent value places on airbnb I think.

  • Sadly it looks like Sydney is all booked out for the offer in May-June 2016. Do these sort of Japan JetStar deals happen reasonably often? Maybe not return for free but decent sale deals? Might hold off until a new offer is out there.

    • the 2 for 1 or these types of deals seem to pop up 2-3 times a year from memory

      • Hopefully they do another one, haha very keen on getting some flights!

    • They usually do one in Sept and one in Oct/Nov. From past yrs I feel like the one in Oct/Nov is just to fill the remaining seats for the Jan-March ski season. It probably won't be as good (still great at 600 return + luggage) but you never know. And if you do get it, you'll get to go peak ski season. So there can be an advantage to waiting/missing this.

  • Ive got no luck, for dates from multiple locations. sold out?

    • Im still seing return flights, it depends on when. There is still a heap in october 2015 for tokyo

Just some kind of a warning for flight from Brisbane to Osaka. Flew in August so first flight was JQ926 which is leaving at 7am, but if the runway is busy flight can be delayed and you arrive at Cairns somewhere at 9-40. Then you have to collect your luggage and run 500m to International terminal, check-in, go through customs (and fill departure card). Next flight to Osaka at 11am, so you have less than an hour before boarding starts (around 10-40am). Pretty intense especially of you have to fill out departure cards for big family. We did it but I'd rather do a stopover at Cairns for day or two though it won't work as a deal. Just my thoughts about connections at Cairns. JQ25 to Tokyo flies at 12.30 so this is more comfortable connection with plenty of time allowed for delays.

Just booked flights from Gold Coast early December for $550 each return. We missed out on the $349 seats so had to pay $459 instead, but still happy with the price due to the free return flights.

SO EXCITED! Never been to Japan but always wanted to.

Enjoy! So much to see & do, it would take a lifetime to explore.

      Don't forget about your cat!

      • Of course not :O
i'll be doing a cat cafe tour while im there!

          2 of them in Kyoto

        • @JayM:
Went with some girls to a recommended cat cafe in Shibuya before Christmas.

The long wait (have to wait until someone leaves before entering at busy times), the longer set of rules (can't touch cat unless it comes up to you - just like a strip club), and the escalating prices (entry fee, fee for first time period, …) - well I had a good conversation while waiting in line.

Honest, I only looked in, but did not enter. I had a lovely cat at my Tokyo apartment that would not have been happy about me going to such a place ;-)

        • @Infidel:

Not sure you should be thinking about cheating on your cats like that. They can make your life a living hell, more so than normal, though they can do this at the drop of a hat anyway (: Worse if you take a cat you like home and the other cat catches you stroking it.
