This is an excellent piece of software, the SMART data history and health status are fantastic.

  • How frequently do we use this application? :-~

    • As far as I know it just provides test information. It doesn't perform maintenance on your drives. Just use if you think you need to.

      • "Hard Disk Sentinel Professional has integrated backup and disk repairing functions and is designed to monitor hard drive and SSD health, predict hard drive and SSD failure, fix hard drive and SSD problems, improve hard drive and SSD performance degradations, and prevent data loss."

Doesn't seem like to be just test information as it describes itself.

        • It seems to provide disk repair options in the surface test menu (all of which are destructive except for one). Other than that can anybody elaborate on how this software "repairs" HDDs?

        • @gtrdude: It's a basic program that does basic functions. The repair would be no different to a chkdsk repair - mark the offending sectors as bad and not to be used. The other option is to clear reported errors which just means resetting the SMART data. This does nothing in terms of helping the operation of the drive and HD Sentinel doesn't pretend it does.

    • My is always running, well, I see it when I boot up the PC.

I use it all the time. But I fix computers for a living.

It's a good thing to have on people's computer to let them know something's awry. Probably not worth paying for but a free version is very welcome.

  • Thanks. Apparently my external hdd has 4 days left :(

    • +8

Thats good to know, but you'd have a backup anyway wouldn't you? :P=

Porn doesn't download itself after all :)

      Make sure to backup.

Pretty nice app. I can swear that my HDD is causing some failures - but cannot identify which one exactly even with it though. Maybe the reboots are caused from the USB 3.0 PCI-e card. hmmm…

    • If you're having reboots that don't create a BSOD/Event then the odds a HDD is at fault are very, very low.

      • It does.. and does a dumplog too. But the Dumplogs is not very meaningful pointing specifically at the kernel without any device driver indications. I swear I've gone through the entire machine and changed the parts - RAM, Disks/SSD's etc. Only thing left is that damned USB 3.0 card.

        • +2

Nothing more annoying than an intermittent bug that survives multiple part replacements.

        • @tantryl:

Or a Dumplog that refuses to be flushed out of the system.
          :D

        • If not the PCI card then PSU is possible. Also can't rule out software issues without detailed investigation.

        • You may have already done this but try using a can of compressed air and cleaning all the dust off mainboard and video cards / memory etc.

Solved some BSOD issues I was having with my box.

        • @wyrmy: Not software for sure. I've rebuilt it twice (its actually my Windows Server) on separate SSD's. The Windows install is so plain because the only thing running on it is Hyper-V and VM's (which run in their own protected space with separate installations).

        • @klownz: Pretty much done that and vacuumed it out to be sure. Too hard to test the PSU, but its a relatively newish machine (<3 years old). Its a stock HP desktop. There are only two cards in it - an Intel Gbit NIC and a no name USB 3.0 PCIe card.

        • @starionx: It's worse when you don't get a dump log.

Which has been the case every time my pc has slept since I "upgraded" to Windows 10.

          DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE

Dump recording just sticks at 0%. So I have no idea which driver or hardware might be at fault.

This is great software, I use it for my server with 20 hard drives in it.

I have it run short self tests weekly automatically which it then sends me an email with the report on how they went.

    Lots of features, worth buying.

Older version, and no updates… but free-is-free. Thanks.

Throwaway email, always, for any give away sites. Never use your proper email unless you want it to fill with pink tinned ham.

      • Agreed. But I've got a handful of spam Gmail accounts for that. Helps for sites that might be good down the track, or if they're 'onto' mailinator style sites.

        • sharewareonsale stated deal will end sometime this afternoon (there is a time counter on their site). Not sure if the vendor requires online activation and they will disable the free registration after this afternoon, or is it free forever once you have the setup file.

I installed it today and there were no problems.

  • Essential Thanks Arse.

  • I use Avira and its blocked the InstallCore.Gen.7 when I unzipped the downloaded zip file. Anyone else encountered the same?

    • uploaded the installer file to Virustotal and it came back all good, no positive detection.
Antivir companies used to offer free online scan for single files, when I checked couple of companies today, all of them offers "free system scan" butI have to install stuff to do it, no convenient single file scans :(

Great software ended up buying 4.6 recently with a discount code ended up being around 20bux… totally worth the cost…it has saved me in the past and also allowed me to see my SSD in the past start to die so i replaced it early before shit hit the fan.

You can convert this into the portable edition.

    Goto http://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php

Download the Hard Disk Sentinel Pro portable ZIP.

Extract the ZIP to your USB/somewhere on your PC.

Copy & overwrite HDSentinel.exe with the one from your C:\Program Files (x86)\Hard Disk Sentinel\ and also copy HDSentinel.key from this folder into the portable folder.

    Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/51ldTUf.png

    • Didn't work for me unfortunately. I unzipped v4.60 Portable into a USB drive, then overwrote the executable file with my v4.50 version and also copied the license key file into the drive.

      • What if you press the load registration key button and then select the key file?

        • facepalm. Thank you. That was obvious. Didn't think of that.

A related and useful hard disk shareware program is HD Tune. http://www.hdtune.com/

I wish there were more shareware sales and shareware bundles, like there are with PC games. It is very expensive to build up a library of applications, and I am not even going to mention high end stuff like Adobe or Autodesk products. Most people either rely on freeware, or pirate, or a combination of both. Through Ozbargain I have picked up about 5 free versions of commercial software. Thanks for letting the rest of us know about these deals.

PC software is far more expensive than mobile appz.

  • On hdsentinel.com there's a link to a testimonial by one of their customers:

We currently use the software for testing all HDD that we buy before they are put into service, and as we sometimes buy refurbished drives for certain things, knowing their condition is very important, and the software has caught several with bad sectors allowing us to return them rather than have them fail on us.

I've never heard of a enterprise buying refurbished HDDs. Does this happen elsewhere?

What about storage providers who use large amounts of storage? What about backup solutions where disk cost is paramount? Where do you think all the refurbished hard drives go?
