Telstra Double Data on $50 BYO+Casual Plan: 5GB Data + $1000 Talk, UNLTD SMS (New Connects Only)

830

Not as great as the recent deals from Optus, but one of the better Telstra deals for a while.

Double Data on the $50 BYO/Casual plan. Normally has 2.5GB data.

Now:
* 5GB Data
* $1000 Calls
* Unlimited SMS/MMS/Messagebank
* Excess data charged at $10/GB blocks.

If you have an iPhone, I imagine you can get the free 12 months Apple Music offer + additional 500MB (bringing it to a total of 5.5GB!). See here.

Home page at https://www.telstra.com.au/ says it is for NEW connections only, valid until 28th September 31 December 2015. I had a talk with one of their online chat CSRs and this DOES extend to people on prepaid. Existing numbers on Telstra plans aren't eligible apparently (although the page with the plan listed doesn't mention any T&Cs at all).

        • Boost don't have access to the 4G network; you're on 3G though the speeds are generally quite good.

        • @DrStinge: I am on Boost, however have a telstra sim card. It comes up 4g all the time and speeds would indicate it is 4g

    • I was on boost but switched over just because of this deal. 4gx!

  • Hey guys, I've got a quick question. At the moment I'm in a contract with Vodafone, I would like to switch to Telstra and have my number ported over. Will my contract with Vodafone terminate resulting in me having to pay the early termination fee or will I still be contracted with Vodafone with a different number? Cheers.

    • Will my contract with Vodafone terminate resulting in me having to pay the early termination fee

      This.

    • I believe it would occur a termination fee. Chat to Vodafone to double check.

    • You could try to do this:
      - Change of number with Vodafone
      - Activate a prepaid with Vodafone and ask them to put your old number on it

I know with Telstra this would be possible, we'd hate you because it takes a while but we'd do it if you ask nicely.
Dunno if it's possible with Vodafone.

Then you could port out the prepaid to this offer from Telstra, and you'd have a still-in-contract plan with voda on another number.

  • I am on Telstra prepaid and I use the main credit to buy apps from the google play store.
Will there be such provision in this plan to deduct from the $50 main balance or will buying of the apps be on top of the $50.
I am guessing there's no such thing as main balance on post paids?

  • Very annoyed because I only signed up to their medium casual plan about a month ago.

The customer service rep was sympathetic to me and said he would allocate the extra 2.5gb of data if he could; but alas, his hands are of course tied.

Has anyone had any luck getting it added as an existing customer? Really disappointing that they are seemingly alienating their current customers like this.

    • If you're a casual customer, it's a PITA but you could port to another carrier (grab a $2 sim for one of them) and then port back.

That or talk to other staff. You'll find on these sorts of matters that often some will let it pass and others won't.

  • I managed to get the Telstra 5GB casual 4G plan @ $40 p/month.

    • How did you manage that?

    • yeh how?

      • Staff discount probably

  • Can not believe my VF recharge ($40)is getting me 40% less data than in this Telstra plan. The world must be upside down.

  • does anyone know how long this deal lasts for?

My contract ends in october, contemplating early exit or waiting one more month

    • +2

If you ask nicely they'll transfer you to the double data plan without early termination fees. Worked for me and I had several months left in my contract. They also gave me the option of moving to the casual plan which is identical, and reduced my ongoing plan by $10 plus gave me the first month free (both due to further technical issues I experienced). Telstra's customer service has been 200% this year, I've had so many issues and they've bent over backwards so many times in ways I never expected. Incidentally David Thodey (previous CEO) was in my building last week standing next to me at the Reception desk, so I shook his hand and thanked him for the great work he did which I personally benefited from.

      • im with telechoice atm, so kind of switching carriers

    • +1

      end of september

  • they wouldn't let me go across & utilise the double data deal. I'm on a 24 month contract ending in mid October. rats D:

  • Can anyone confirm if on a mobile plan how do we pay the bill each month? Is it via direct debit only? Or can pay via CC/BPay?

  • I actually had the CSR tell me that I was eligible before signing up (I was on an existing plan) and now I find out that I'm not eligible and stuck on a 12 month plan.
I submitted a complaint hoping they can at least let me terminate without charge.

Anyone had any experiences in these situations?

    • Happened to me too, though they managed to get me on a 24 month contract as well, even though I did not sign up for it..

Went through customer support and now I'm told I've got the 2.5GB bonus added to my account. Still need to wait 48hrs for it to show up though.

      • They said the same thing to me but it never showed up. Now they're trying to decline the offer. If the sales rep said you can get the data legally they have to honour it.

  • I ported over from Optus last Thursday, my account is currently showing 3gb (2.5gb+500mb bonus) of data included. After two lengthy chats on Telstra 24x7 and 100% assurances that I would get the full 5gb it is still yet to appear on my account. I Will wait until the end of the week before I waste more time chatting online.

  • Looks like they've extended it - "Offer ends October 26, 2015".

    • Offer is for new customers only and valid until 28 September.

Where does it say October 26 on their website?

      • Fine print at the bottom. But now that you mention it, I think that applies to the bonus data deals on the other plans, with $50 BYO a different promotion. My bad.

  • So I just tried to do the same, live chat with Telstra rep and was flat out rejected (existing customer, have been off contract for 4 years).
Should I just try again? Otherwise I'll go buy a voda sim to get me through the next day or two and then port back in to Telstra.
Seems like a completely pointless activity but hey, if that's what they want…

    • Had the same argument with many a Telstra rep over the years. Telstra obviously has weighed it up that there's no benefit in offering incentives for retention of uncontracted customers.

      • It makes me a sad panda. I'll go pick up one of $10 voda starter kits from Coles today, get off Telstra for a couple of days and then "sign back up".

Can anyone confirm this will work 100% ?

    • Forget my complaint. Live chat drone was just an idiot. Just did it on the phone while on the way to Coles, and the rep confirmed it was valid and a separate promotion for existing customers, and changed me over to casual $50/5GB/$1000 calls.

      • Nice. Reps are so hit and miss.

  • Boost- $40 mth- no contract. Telstra 3G. Unlimited talk/text + 7GB data (3GB throughout the month, extra 1GB every Sunday). #111# to check your balance as you go.

    Best deal for me… ymmv.

    Cheers
