  • free again for 24 hours only.

not much time to backup our drives…

    • Why don't you have enough time?

Nope, I'm behind on my posts

          Get some posts behind you.

"our" implies theres more than one jv's in the world!! OMG nooooooo

I'd recommend Macrium Reflect. Always free, very simple to use, no bundled crapware and very powerful. You can create automated backup schedules to image your whole PC regularly without any input (uses VSS so runs from within Windows) and it mounts images as VHDs for easy browsing. Never had a hiccup with it; cloned dozens of HDDs to SSDs.

sounds good, only don't go to that page as it will direct you to get it from download.com, which tries install a lot of adware/spyware/pups/bloat/rubbish with the program.

you can find it on majorgeeks.com which is much better

    • +2

The free version of Macrium is not as capable as the full version, so there may still be a place for Paragon in your arsenal.

      http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/macrium_reflect_free…

Quoting from the comments at the above link:
'I think it should also be noted that as of this date (20130807) Macrium Reflect FREE Edition provides far fewer capabilities than the features/functions listed above. The title of the page along with the layout could be misinterpreted by some readers that MRFE has all those capabilities (e.g. password/encryption/partition-resizing/scripting/etc).

Be sure to look at the Macrium Reflect feature comparison chart at:
      http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

While MRFE is a very capable program it still is very limited compared to the not-free "Full" and other versions."

    • I also recommend Macrium Reflect. Have used it to upgrade many hard drives and use it for all my weekly backups.
Still I'll be grabbing a copy of Paragon for free. Thanks OP.

    • Why does my installation fail with "This product is not valid for Windows Server Operating Systems"? Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64 build 7601.

Samsung ssd came with migration tool, easy as

I'm always a reinstall person myself. But nice deal.

Most people have MBR formatted drives anyway, good time to update them to GPT for windows 10.

  • The text on the website implies that the Compact version is always free … are we sure this is a real deal?

"Please note folks: Paragon Hard Disk Manager 15 - Backup & Recovery Compact is a free to use standalone software product with Backup & Recovery features."

    • From Paragon's website:

Important notice: Download of Hard Disk Manager - Backup & Recovery 15 Compact is possible during time-limited special promotions only. If you found and reached this site through Google, unfortunately it is not possible to download the software after free registration.

  • you might want to mention on the headline this deal is only for the Paragon Hard Disk Manager 15 - Backup & Recovery "Compact" versions

  • Can the downloaded free copy be used for my second laptop using the same registration number? Thanks.

Or do I have to download another copy for it?

    • ** edit ** reply to wrong post

  • "Your Download Link should arrive shortly at the email address you supplied us."

    O RLY?
It's been almost half an hour and still no download link.

    • Got mine soon after registration and successfully installed. Wrong email address supplied?

      • Doubt it. I got the email from Paragon serial number and login details for the site, but no download link (maybe I'm blind?). When I log into the Paragon site, I can see the application in my list of registered products, but the download page is empty.

        • Yeah been almost 8 hours and I still have no download link yet - can someone pls upload the 32 and 64bit versions somewhere? :(

Or is it possible to download the demo version and then apply the codes?

  • I hope it works with Windows 10. I need to put in an SSD.

    • I think most Samsung SSDs come with transfer software bundled with them

      • I have a Sandisk SSD iirc

  • Will this work to migrate just the os to an ssd and keep all the same stuff on the old hard drive and still have everything linked and working? That's the biggest headache for me.. It's not the upgrade to a new os or installation of a new os but the reinstalling and redownloading of all the software and then setting it all up again. It's no trouble to upgrade on the same drive but buying a 2TB ssd to mirror my existing setup is expensive so I want to buy a cheaper ssd for just windows 10 and migrate all the steam games and other installed software across but leave it on the current drive. Is that even possible?

    • I think what you are asking is too in the too hard basket. You want to do a clean install of the OS but also have the OS linked to the old installed programs on another hard disk? Can't work that way. All the registry and ini files and other unknown links would have to be redirected to a new location for your programs. I don't know of any Windows product that can do that.

Paragon does a good job of moving your current structure to a new disk, it won't do what I think you are asking.

      • Any product that could do this would be a hit though. An untapped market there I think.

    • +1

You could create a mount point / junction link for Program Files folder, or maybe just C:\Program Files\Steam.
That can be done through disk manager or follow this guide:
      http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/294557-32-guide-move-softw…

    • Macrium will do that for you….. I had to do it a few kings ago… 1tb->512gb

  • Have done three HD to SSD migrations (2 Windows 8.1 with UEFI, 1 Windows 7) using free Farstone driveclone.
Straight fwd connect SSD via USB case to laptop. It adjust the drive ID so UEFI does not have a heartattack.

  • These partition and disk transfer softwares never work for me. Never wont boot correctly and always end up setting up a new OS instead :/

    • Try Macrium Reflect. (A six year old child could do it. Run out and get me a six year old, I can't make head or tail of this.)

  • +1

Clonezilla works fine for me when backing up / restoring prior to a fresh install. (Free too)

  • Does Macrium Reflect Free offer encryption too please?

  • I used this freebie a couple of years ago when installing w8
    DriveImage XML V2.50
    https://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm

Backup files are in xml, really easy.

I created a partition and kept the old o/s backup files on there (w7 I think).
Ended up restoring the old image without a hitch.

I think you can view and restore selected files, pretty sure it is a live backup

Link is for Paragon Hard Disk Manager 15 - Backup & Recovery Compact, not drive copy?

    • +1

Looks like Drive Copy may be no longer on offer and BDJ have switched to a different Paragon product.

    • Well spotted, sorry about that. Mark me as a victim of copy / paste. I'll amend the post accordingly.

Comparing the feature list it looks like Hard Disk Manager contains all the features of Drive Copy and more, so we get a little more than we thought. :)

Noted that the 'Windows 10' support box isn't ticked.

      • Can't amend the title without starting a whole new post. Admins?

There are anecdotal posts from users saying it works with Windows 10 okay.

  • Paragon's website indicates that Windows 10 is supported. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hdm-personal/

    • Not sure if this is accurate, but a comment on the BDJ page suggests otherwise.

Lynette Coles: Will it work with Windows 10?
Franz User: @Lynette Coles: No, you must upgrade and buy the professional.

So I read the blurb for this and it appears to be an application for people that haven't discovered a program known as Windows Explorer.

You guys should check it out, you can copy files with it.

    • +2

You can copy and paste boot sectors and protected operating system files with Explorer these days?

  • does anyone know how to clone windows 8.1 to a usb enclosed SSD? i have one of those small form factor PC and it doesnt allow for 2 internal hard drive, so is it possible to use my ssd and an enclosed usb case and clone it over? I tried using easeus todo but it doesnt work for me, when it clones the drive, i remove my ssd from the enclosure and put it in but it wont boot from it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I did try to google the solution but can't seem to find a solution

    • Do you have an extra external USB drive or Network drive to store to? You should be able to create a backup image to that then create a restoration USB stick/DVD boot the computer and restore the image to your newly installed SSD.

    • I'd straight up clone the drive with Clonezilla (Free) to the USB. Just make sure you ID the SSD/HDD's serials so you don't copy/delete the wrong drives.

  • I've tried these sorts of programs before, but found I didn't have much use for them, especially since Windows 7 came out. Windows 7 can do most, if not all, of the same things already. I ended up getting an Astone external duel hard drive reader/writer/copier, instead. It cost about seventy bucks, but I don't have to open up my computer to swap drives around, any more. :-)

  • Anybody not using their serial number? please let me know…trying to clone my hdd to ssd.
