$1 Freshly Ground Coffee @ 7-Eleven

1190

This is nothing new, but I suspect a lot of people don't realise these are available, and that it's not "instant". Part of my morning routine involves picking one of these up and walking along the beach. After having one of these I can't justify $4 at the nearby cafes for a takeaway.

Update (thanks elliot91): These are free on Friday with any purchase*.
* Excludes tobacco and smoking related products. Limit of one free regular sized coffee per transaction per store per day.
Offer only available on 14 and 21 August 2015.

  • There's a lot of things a lot of people don't realize.

    • +89

Like the fact that in Australia the word is spelt 'realise'?

      • +3

And organisation? and colour and Z is pronounced Zed rather than Zee?

        • +23

          @jubba:

          You're* ;)

      • +9

I must have clicked the + sign ten times then. I HATE US English.

          @jubba:

          That's not very nice…

          @jubba:
          Read between the lines .lol

        • +1

          @nocure:
I guess jv is not getting many negs today lol

        • @jubba:
Because you are too dumb to set the correct language variant on your phone.
Set it for UK English input if it lacks Australian. (if it really bothers you that much)

        • -1

          @manic:
i should drink so many slurpees….

      • I realize that but I prefer to use standard English.

        • Good point. It may come as a surpriSe to some but often people don't realiZe that in British english some verbs properly end in -ize (e.g. realise) and some in -ise (e.g. surprise); this depends mostly on the orgin of verb, e.g. latin, greek or french. Australian english tends to eschew the -ize in favour of -ise. Australian anti-american, who go for -ize, rather than pro-british, who use both, in this respect.

        • @rover:

I think you are going off topic

  • +3

These are what got me through uni, well the larger $2 variety.

    • +2

Slurpees brain freeze made me flunk

    • +18

There isn't much different volume wise between the regular and large. Better to make two trips and get the $1 coffee twice.

Better yet, just get a regular $1 and put in TWO+ espresso shots (select short black).

      • +4

Better yet get regular and fill it with 7 shots

  • +12

shell express also do 80cent coffees (aribica or something but they have beans that get grinded when you use the machine)

they're not bad either but makes you wonder about coffee shops hmmmmm…..

    • +12

Yep, they are from Coles Express I think. You can get them for free if you use their ATMs and have Coles CC or a card like ING Direct that doesn't charge ATM fees. After the balance enquiry you can choose the coupon for a free small coffee :)

    • +10

      their coffee tastes crap though.

    • +1

I sometimes check my ING card balance at coles express ATM and get free coffee voucher. But Their coffees do taste like crap.

    • +1

Don't like the Coles express coffee. Tried it the other day and much prefer 7-11, to be honest it is better than alot of cafes which have poorly trained baristas and use supermarket beans.

      • I actually prefer the local Coles Express coffee to the local 7-11 coffee. Also, the price is cheaper ($1.50 for regular vs $2) and you can add a doughnut or muffin pretty cheap as a combination.

    • Just makes me appreciate the good coffee shops all the more. You get what you pay for.

  • Also noted Coles/shell now do 80c coffees in perth. Maybe oz wide

    • +1

      should be ozwide

we have them in Sydney :)

      • oswide

  • +2

    Coles Express Small $0.80c / Large $1.60

  • +10

I'm a fan of the 7/11 $1 coffee, and the Shell ones. For the price, they aren't amazing, but they aren't gross either. I've had much worse and I'm willing to take a slight reduction in quality to save money. Paying $4 each time gets very expensive and hard to justify.

    • Better thank McDonalds coffee imo

      • +5

        OK.
        Thanks, McDonalds coffee!

  • +3

Reminder that the Coles Express coffee is free if you use their ATMs and select the free coffee coupon at the end. You can simply do a balance enquiry. Only worthwhile for people with Coles credit cards OR if you're with ING Direct that waives the ATM fees :)

  • +3

This is the normal price and its been like this for years.

    • Yep. And as a snooty Melbourne office worker, I walked past this offer every day for years and bought far more expensive coffee. It's only been recently that I've learned that 7-Eleven coffee isn't actually that bad. Years wasted.

So, yes this is normal price, and has been like this for years - but it does qualify as a bargain.

For other snooty coffee drinkers: Give this stuff a chance. Yes, Emilio the awesome barista at Coffee Lovers cafe will make you a better coffee for twice the price. But, while better, it's nowhere near twice as good.

  • Never had one - how does it taste? Comparable to a $3 coffee at a cafe?

    • +12

Not even close, but for $1 it'll do.

    • +2

It isnt too bad…give it a shot. Probably the best coffee $1 can buy…..

      • +4

I see what you did there

      • Or 2

    • +4

Where do you get $3 coffee from??!! Lately, I've been paying $4 for small, and $4.5 for medium. it's ridic.

    • +2

Quality varies from store to store. I found a good one and stick with it.

      • Agreed, one next to uni was on point, next to work on the otherhand couldnt get through two sips.

    • +1

Just hold your nose and scull it, the caffeine effect is all the same lol

    • Way better than a quarter of the taste! I like to think I'm not fussy, but I can't stand the coles express ones

  • +9

You can also get a double shot for no extra cost, simply grab a cup and run the 'short black' cycle twice, then fill up the rest of the cup using the 'hot milk' button.
Be careful as about 1 sec after the manual hot milk pour is done the machine cleans itself by squirting out hot water through the pipes. Not a big deal since you just poured hot water filtered through burnt seeds into the cup, it just doesn't look that nice.

    • Never though of that!!

Although I still wouldn't have it.. sounds snobby i know :|

      • +2

.. right .. yre a SNOB .. yre comment based on never trying it….

        • +1

          In English?

    • Does it work in Coles express as well?

      • +1

No … why would they .. they have everyday bargains on lots of other things

    • Add a bit of cold milk at the end. I hate a burnt tongue

  • +7

I tried one of these when it first came out with the $1 price, and it was close to the worst coffee I've ever drunk (including Pablo "factory floor sweepings blend" instant coffee). Now that people here say its OK maybe I'll give it another shot.

But beware, YMMV store to store.

    • +15

      I'll give it another shot

      ಠ_ಠ

      • +4

I swear that was not a conscious pun.

    • Yes, when they first introduced $1 coffee, my impression was the same, although without the "close to" qualification.

They rolled out new coffee machines soon after - the quality since then has been acceptable and fairly uniform across stores.

  • +3

OP, which of these statements is true?

If you're living next to the beach, you should be able to justify $4 for a takeaway coffee.
    or
You're living next to the beach because you spend $1 for a takeaway coffee.

    • +3

Combination of being a bargain hunter and living in a small apartment in a comparitively inexpensive property market (Gold Coast) 😊
Same thing at least double near Syd/Melb

    • +2

Definitely the second one for me. My builders buy their coffees from the cafe down the road from the beach for $4.50 I turn up with my home made coffee or 7 eleven $1 one if everyone is asleep at home when I leave. Guess who has the beachfront house?

  • +5

Does this really constitute a 'deal'? It's the regular price.

Perhaps should be moved to the forum.

  • .. surprisingly excellent coffees .. highly recommended by me .. and definitely still a bargain .. -:)

  • +3

Still can't understand why people 'complain' about the coffee, $3-4+ at a cafe vs $1 for this? Sometimes with other offers like cheap muffins etc.

I'm willing to take a 20% hit in taste for a coffee that costs 25% of a regular one at a cafe.

It's definately not bad enough to make me spit it out that's for sure.

    • Because they're far from the same product and service.

  • +3

Also, note the Hot Choccie's at $2
the cup comfortably holds a short black AND a standard cappucino,
great to make up a double shot Mocha on the sly ;-) just be sure to mix the choccie well for before the milk starts to flow on the cappa

    • +1

Good tip, might try one out. Sometimes there are ATM offers on $1 Hot Chocs.

    • The hot chocolate are the Nestle ones which in my opinion, is terrible :P

  • +1

Also, Coles Express stations have coffee's at 80c

  • -5

short black is bad, however the milk they do is purely milk powder plus water, it tastes nasty.
get a short black and take to the office to add some real milk from office is a better option.

    • +4

I don't know what machine your 7/11 uses but every time I have seen my local 7/11 operator cleaning the machine I see two fresh 7/11 branded milk bottles inside. They just put them in from the fridge so it was fresh.

      • +2

All the 7/11s I've tried have a little fridge next to or under the unit with the pipe running into actual milk bottles

      • +1

They mix it up at the back then they put it in the bottles for show

    • +3

however the milk they do is purely milk powder plus water

      How do you know this?

The one I go to, I've seen them literally top up the machine with 2L 7/11 liquid milk straight from their fridge.

    • +2

I've seen them replace the milk. It's definitely not milk powder.

    • +2

I've seen them top it up with real milk as well. There's nothing powdery about it. Have you even actually had one?

  • +5

Is this all it takes to post a 'bargain' these days?

  • +2

Guys is it just me or do you guys also get 'the runs' after drinking coffee?

If I have coffee, I need to go within half an hour so I never drink it if I need to be driving lol

    • +2

Anything warm in the morning usually 'pushes everything down'

    • +1

Have a banana and drink v double espresso at the same time - sometime! :)

    • What happens if you drink a glass of plain milk? If you get the runs then, you know it's not the coffee. It's possible it's lactose intolerance.

  • It is worth noting that it is still cheaper to invest in something like a french press or even an aeropress, buy some ground beans on special and brew that every day. I believe it would only be a few cents per cup if all you are after is a caffeine hit. I think you can even make espresso concentrate with the aeropress to save time.

Then, there are also caffeine pills available for sale such as No-doz and other generic brands on the internet. Although, those can be unsafe if you don't moderate your intake.

    • +2

caffeine pills is an absolute last resort - that stuff is terrible for you

      • -1

        And coffee isn't?

    • +7

Caffeine pills is the worst suggestion ever

      • -1

        Why so?

        • +1

Because that interferes with their fantasy that coffee is less addictive and poisoness than other products with the same drug. They got this view from marketing.

        • @Diji1:

Surely the lack of processing in coffee beans compared to no-doze means something?

  • +1

I bought one of these once, never again. There are bargains and then there are gimps

  • -3

That's like posting a deal about cheap & nasty Port… yeah its cheap as shit but it tastes like concentrated sewage. Rather pay an extra few bucks to actually enjoy a coffee

  • +3

I actually prefer this coffee over some "good" coffee. It doesn't have that sour taste that I've found places that are well known for having 'good coffee' have, which I don't like. But that's just me. Perhaps I have bad taste. (Still don't like instant coffee much though)

Knowing that I've saved ~$3 probably makes it taste better too :)

    • +2

Agreed. Must admit have been drinking this for almost a year now and (while its not the best coffee) its decent. For that price really is a good deal/caffeine hit. Don't forget their small coffee size is even larger than most medium/large coffee that you pay at other coffee shops.

Oh yes, I asked the local 7/11 shop keeper about double shots / 'mocha'. I actually like his response. "95% of customers don't do that, but if/when a customer helps themselves with any 'extras', they can't do anything about it. For $1 or $2, its already a good deal".

I don't know maybe its just me, but in general Sydney coffee aren't that great anyway… OOPsss.. I soooo did not say that did I ? :)
