$1 Freshly Ground Coffee @ 7-Eleven

1190

This is nothing new, but I suspect a lot of people don't realise these are available, and that it's not "instant". Part of my morning routine involves picking one of these up and walking along the beach. After having one of these I can't justify $4 at the nearby cafes for a takeaway.

Update (thanks elliot91): These are free on Friday with any purchase*.
* Excludes tobacco and smoking related products. Limit of one free regular sized coffee per transaction per store per day.
Offer only available on 14 and 21 August 2015.

Stack it up with a 2 dollar muffin and badabing-badabom you just spent $3 on a complete coffee shop experience minus the coffee shop & actual Barista coffee.

    • How is the experience close, in any way??

      • That's the joke its nothing like a coffee shop :)

      • -1

        went over the head

        • -1

          Failed sarcasm.
          Needs work.

        • @Utopian:

          Not at all.
          I managed to get it

        • -1

          @dbun1: Another fail.
"Not at all" = 100% understood the clumsy "sarcasm".
          Visibly not the case.

        • @Utopian:

It's okay. Not everyone is quick witted.
          You'll learn.

        • @dbun1: Look who needed personal insults. I already learnt, by looking above. On ya bike.

  • +4

plus .. free $1 coffee if you fill up the petrol on Friday

  • this coffee is fine for a buck - also combine with a muffin for $3 for a real bargain

  • Had one of these last week for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised. Even more surprised when I saw the guy topping up the milk with real milk

  • I usually prefer the coles express 80c double shot espresso ;)

I find the hardcore coffee snob places make a very oily espresso and that isnt really to my taste. Coles/7-11 isn't perfect, but for the cost i'm very willing to deal with it

    • Hi Matt Preston!
I tried the 80c coffee at my local coles express and was impressed. The coffee tastes similar to 7/11 but the foam quality was far superior. Made for a nice creamy coffee.

  • if you use the bankwest ATM at the 7-11, which I do by just getting a balance, your coffee will end up being just a $1 with the receipt. NO further purchase required. Any day of the week.

    • +2

or don't use the bankwest ATM and still pay a dollar?

      • what he meant to say is your get a large coffee (usually $2) for $1.

        • That offer has been OzBargained for about 3 weeks now.

    • That offer is expired now. The current deal is one of those new Malteser bars for $1. Ironically they also have another special where the Malteser bards are $1 with any coffee purchase.

  • +1

If you have never tried one then I would recommend it. I find it is actually a decent coffee and much better that than some cafes I've been too. Also it's $1 so you can't go wrong! If you work only week days and drink coffee then that's only $5 for the week! Compared to cafe brought coffee which = $18.50 (assuming it cost you $3.70.)

  • +2

7-Eleven coffee is great for the price. Even ignoring the price, the coffee is fine (despite what cofee snobs may think) and tastes 9000x better than the worst coffee I've ever had - McDonald's' 'Espresso Pronto'.

    • I agree with the McDonald's comment - it's watery as all hell!

    • Why not just go the McCafe route? You can specify "Cappuccino from McCafe" even at the drive-thru.

      • Student Edge card promo could only be applied to Espresso Pronto rather than the McCafe variety. However, because McDonald's is apparently phasing out the former, it seems I won't be getting coffee from there again.

        • Nice - I hadn't heard of this Student Edge thing. Moot point now I guess.

  • It's $1 for a small coffee. If you get "grande" it's $3. It's not bad and to be honest I drink it all the time but more for convenience and time. I'd rather pay an extra $1.50 and get it from one of preferred coffee shops. Preferred meaning they make coffee that I like. For coffee out of a machine, it's not exactly a bargain.

  • +1
  • I'd love to try one, if only they were more stores in WA. Holidaying in Sydney spoiled me.

  • +2

Heads up these are free on Friday with ANY purchase (ie. fruit is usually under $1).
Another FYI: if you withdraw (or use in any-way) the BankWest ATM inside, you get a receipt printed off for a large coffee ($2) for the price of a small!

These coffee's are pretty good, give them a try! :)

Also worth noting the taste will definitely differ between different 7/11s. If you don't like one, try another.

    • +1

On the taste front - I would have thought, being a big chain, they would use the same beans, the same milk, and have the same machine making it. Where would the variance be?

      • There's at least two types of machines currently in use. Other variances could be freshness of beans, milk, water source.

    • true, I think if the machine is well maintained and operating correctly, it will be acceptable. Otherwise forget it.

    • +1

And added this to OP - good spotting on the free coffee on friday.

    • The second FYI deal is expired.

Being a tight arse, I was addicted to these when I worked in the city. I used to be a $4.50 moccha man but cant justify it anymore. Its not the best but add some chocolate sprinkle on top. They usually keep it behind the counter.

I recently discovered the Caltex Aurora coffees. Wow, they are amazing for $2 and its my new addiction. Also, Woolworths near Central makes good coffees.

  • Don't forget to get a coupon from the ATM using ING Direct to get the largest cup for $2 instead of $3

  • Nothing like a good cup of Italian coffee, oh wait I don't drink coffee!

  • For black coffee drinkers - Get some colleagues together and get a Nespresso machine at work. Initial expense for the machine yes, but then 50 cent (or less) coffees from then on. Each person buys their own pods. Quality coffee: tick, convenience: tick, no mess: tick, cheap: tick.

  • yeah, they are coffee, but terrible taste, and yeah shitty milk

Freshly Ground Coffee - how does it taste?

I normally have Freshly Brewed Coffee ;)

    • +1

It tastes good, because the beans are not pre-grounded

  • Thanks OP!

  • +14

I am an employee of a 7 Eleven Store. I can assure you all that everything is fresh. 3-4 bags of beans come every night. And by the next night, there is at most half a bag left. Milk is straight from the fridge and is the same what we normally sell to customers. I work next to a train station and people love the coffee. I put in new milk every 15 minutes. I am loving the comments in this thread.

    • Is it true that some 7/11 employees are paid below the minimum wage? I was talking to an employee who said he was getting $14/hour :S

      • +7

Thats unfortunately right. I get paid below minimum. But nobody complains because these people are the only ones that give us immigrants jobs. I only work one odd shift to supplement my studies as I am in Uni atm. And in the tax return they claim that they are paying $19-20 to their employees. So the difference of $19 and what they actually pay us is just tax free income for them and it amounts to around $20k a year per store just savings from not paying employees minumum wage

        • +2

That is illegal, 7/11 needs to be fined for this

        • @Brainwhacker:
There was four corner report last Monday about this wage problem.
One greedy CEO and poor student workers doing 10-12 hour shifts for $12-15 per hour.

      1. How old are the pies?
      2. Do you eat them?
      3. Do you recommend to eat the pies?
      4. What about the hot dogs?
      5. Tell us some more stories
      • +12
        1. Pies stay in the oven for 6 hours. After that we have to throw them away.
        2. Yes. As soon as the 6 hours are done, I eat some of the pies as my lunch/dinner for that day for free. If someone asks, we sometimes give them free pies as well after the 6 hour expiry date
        3. Yes. They are fine if you want a cheap snack. Like everything else, they also come every night, so they are fresh. Once they are out of the freezer, they only stay for 6 hours in the oven like I wrote earlier.
        4. Hot Dogs come every night as well. Although, they are not very popular. So there are only a few hot dogs in the delivery. I haven't tried them personally, but they are definitely fresh like everything else.
        5. What sort of stories do you want. Homeless people deliberately dropping sugar wrappers on the ground or drunk people stealing stuff or about my owner, who is an asshole and pays cash to get away with paying less than minimum wage. In short, everything is messed up working at 7 Eleven. I would leave it as soon as I have some other job
        • +1

Is there some way you could work with ozharvest so the wasted food finds it way to those who need it?

        • Cool :) Good to hear that you guys stick with the rules although you guys get paid much less than you deserve. I hope you can find a better job soon.

  • I'll definitely give these a go next time I'm near a 7/11. I generally prefer instant coffee (Aldi gold) and have never had a nice tasting 'professionally' made coffee despite many attempts and locations.

  • +1

So how much do you guys reckon it costs 7/11 to make a coffee?

Inclusive of all operating/maintenance costs, are they still making a profit?

    • +1

My guess would be some high traffic stores in the city may make a profit on this (but maybe not factoring in the higher rent) - however overall they'd be banking on the benefit of people just getting in the store / buying higher margin stuff.

    • +7

Here's an inside figure. It costs around 0.56 cents to make $1 coffee. We sell 300-400 cups on average a day. So it's good profit. The profit margin on $2 and $3 cups is way more than that.

      • +2

Do you know which costs are included in coming in at 0.56 cents? There are so many costs involved - depreciation of the machine, maintenance, wages for employees, rent, power bills, marketing.. list goes on

      • +1

Are you saying 0.56 cents (half a cent) or $0.56??

Half a cent seems too good to be true!

        • +2

$ 0.56 I meant. Lol. These are just the direct costs. Fixed costs are not included obviously. This is only to entice people to come in to the shop. The real money is made from drinks, chips and grocery items etc. People would buy $50 worth of stuff at the shop while at Coles or Woolworths, it would only cost $20 for the same items. But $200 here, $200 in Opal Card recharge profits do help the cause

      • You sir are one honest man, votes up on me and to those imbeciles stop trying so hard to find a flaw with 7-11 no store is perfect.

  • +2

    Is this considered stealing ?

I work in the city and theres one 7/11 downstairs .

I use one $1 dollar cup but i fill it with 5 short black coffees.

I then go to the safe breakroom and use the milk and microwave to make 2 or 3 coffees during the day with the coffee shots .

Ive done it twice so far but im not sure if I should continue.

    • +4

probably. it's more of a conscience thing though

    • You are a true OzBargainer.

    • No; as a 7-11 attendee of questionable ethics once attested, hence quote me as you may henceforth, they charge per cup, not per shot. Hence, if you can squeeze in a sixth one, by all means, Guv…

  • -3

    Not a deal.

  • Excellent value for the staple (short black); no discernible difference between 7-11 and your average coffee shop. The milky alternatives are not baaad but nothing to write home about. Once one gets used to coffee sans milk, coffee with milk just ain't no coffee…

  • -3

Why are middle class people so obsessed with coffee? Coffee is to the middle class what cigarettes and beer are to the lower class.

It is ridiculous that society promotes addiction to one sort of stimulant (caffeine through coffee or energy drinks) while vilifying another sort of stimulant (amphetamines).

  • I went into the 7/11 Auburn Petrol station today and there were three sizes of cups - Small Regular and Large - Do you know if they charge $1 for both small and regular? How much for the large? Do you get large one for $1 if you withdraw from ATM?

Also, I drink weak coffee - is there any trick on how to do that? I would love a Mocha but they dont seem to have one.

    thanks

    • If you use a preset cappucino/latte/flat white etc it is quite weak. I usually get a few shots of short black and fill the rest with milk as I like a stronger coffee.

  • People laugh if I say 7 Eleven is my Favourite Coffee shop! I like really strong coffee so I can make it double shot at 7 Eleven, or just put less milk which they never seem able to do at cafes. My theory was proven when they had a coffee expert on a radio show saying 7 Eleven is the best bang for buck coffee around!

  • Also worth noting is if you withdraw from the bankwest ATM (Free for bankwest and comm bank customers) You get a Free voucher for a Large coffee for $1. $1 is $1 so if you get the large size its worth it :)

    • That's finished.

      • Thanks for letting me know. I would have looked an idiot withdrawing $500 just to get a free larger coffee!

  • OP, does myki recharge qualify as a purchase for a free coffee on the two Fridays? :)

    • The exclusions only mentioned tobacco related products - so worth a shot

      • It might be worth a shot ;)

    • I can confirm it works. Done it multiple times.

      • Cheers mate :)

  • free tomorrow!

  • We are proud of our iconic freshly ground coffee, but to keep pouring you the same quality cupful that we all know and love, we will have to increase the price in October this year, for the first time in 13 years.
From Tuesday 4 October the price of our coffee will increase with a regular cup to cost $2. There will also be price increases across Slurpee, with a large to cost $1.50, along with Iced Coffee, and Hot Chockee.
These price changes have been driven by sustained cost increases across the board which have made the existing prices unsustainable. Since launching our coffee over a decade ago, we have worked hard to avoid passing on costs, however this is no longer possible.
As part of a broader effort to reduce single use cups, coffee drinkers who bring their own reusable cup in store will get a 50c discount.
What will not change is our dedication to improving the sustainability of our coffee and packaging. In the next few weeks, we will be announcing some improvements that will reduce our environmental impact across the range.
We will continue to provide you with great value and great quality while ensuring our prices are sustainable for our store owners, our suppliers and our communities.
We value your ongoing support of the iconic 7-Eleven coffee, and we look forward to seeing you in our stores soon.

    $1 coffee gone soon……
