Wow. This is so tempting. Thanks!

    • why cairns cheaper than other states?

also how to do you find cheap accomodations?

      And any travel advice/tips?

      • My guess is cheaper because of geography and population

        • -1

why would smaller population be cheaper..

Also based on your map, it does not look too much more further but it is almost double the price

Also look at cairns and goldcoast.
Pretty close but almost $150 more.

  • +5

Be tempted! :) When was the last time you travelled? And would you still post deals while on holiday?

    • +26

18 months, and yes I would (and sadly I did)…

      • +1

        Sad for who?!

      • +1

Seriously can we group-buy tightarse a holiday? I'd be happy to chip in $1 towards his holiday for all the $ he's saved (costed?) me.
I may go as far as chipping in $2.

        • +6

          $2?? I'm not sure who's the tightarse here….

    • Will there be any cheap flights to thailand coming up?

      • -1

you planning to meet some ladyboys?

  • FYI - I managed to buy return direct flights (Melbourne - Tokyo) during Easter 2016 school holidays for ~$800 per person return last night with Jetstar with Expedia. Flying 25 March, Returning 8th April as an example.

By no means the ultimate best cheapest deal, but might be good for those who are stuck travelling during school holidays who can never get the best deals.

    • Hi tizey,

Expedia is great for Jetstar flights. We Expedia airfares in our search results, and the $512 price for Melb->Tokyo is through Expedia.

  • We are looking to go to Japan over the Christmas break but none of these deals ever extend that long :(!

  • Is this close to being the best deal or is it still worth holding out for Jetstar's 2 for 1 sale?

    • +1

A $486 return flight was just found for Melb->Tokyo. It would be hard to beat that.

      • Anything you can do from Mid March - early April return flights?

    • +1

I checked the prices for the 2-for-1 sale last November:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/170700
Melbourne>Tokyo is $40 more per person here, not a huge amount

  • Impressive. Even cheaper than my last jetstar flight there.

  • +3

Hotels on Japan get very expensive during busy seasons. Check the cost of accommodation for your destination during the time you want before you book airfares, because you may be in for a shock otherwise. I got cheap fares for November, but accommodation nearly kills the savings.

    • +1

Yes. I'm going in November and booked my accommodation a couple of months ago. Have noticed everything pretty much booked out now for 'autumn leaves' so watch out for this…

      • +3

Some smaller accommodation providers (inns, ryokans, etc) do not open their calendar until 90 days out. So if you're booking for late November/early December now (which also happens to be autumn leaves/koyo season), some accommodation may look like they are booked out, but they have actually just not opened their booking calendar for that period.

        • I travel regularly to Japan, and can vouch for this.

        • +1

Can you recommend a good site to search for these?

    • +2

Air BnB. You will get a much nice apartment than a hotel room, usually more central and with washing/cooking facilities. Depends on the city though. Tokyo and Osaka = tonnes. Hiroshima = almost nothing.

      • +1

I went with Airbnb last time I went, it was the cleanest apartment ever. Great experience in Kyoto.

        • waas it cheap though?

        • +1

          @Hirolol:

Same price as any hotel I could find. Though it had a lot of bonuses like able to do washing and cooking.

        • +1

          @Hirolol:

I got a brand new spacious luxury apartment in a secure building in Osaka, fully automated, errr, everything and they provided bicycles as well so I could ride all over the city (very flat). About $160/night.

          https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/2557726?checkin=Check+In&che…

I am back again in September and will only need a small place for myself, so decided to go more central, around Namba, for about $110/night.

        • +2

I'm staying in a $30/night capsule hotel in Shinjuku. Tomorrow!

        • +1

          @muncan:
Lived in Japan for 2 years and visited many times … still haven't done this :\

        • @Mr Wowtrousers: does that include any extra fees, i know sometimes when you rent apartments they have a 'key fee' and 'cleaning fee' ect.

        • @Hirolol:

They usually charge a cleaning fee and AirBnB obviously takes a cut. Best bet is to put in your dates and see as the pricing changes dynamically on availability etc as the price you get when you visit a particular apartments details page might be different to the overview "map" page

  • +2

How long is this sale running?

    • I'd like to know this as well!

  • Great now I can get away from my colleagues and their unwarranted insults of all my window shopping.

  • +1

So how much will a holiday actually cost me in Japan? Any tips for an itinerary or similar? Have not travelled over seas before…

    • +1

Expect about $100 a day for food and general expenses. Accommodation around $120 - $150.

      • +1

$100 for food and general expenses is hella rich, where/what are you doing.

Airbnb is cheap depending where you stay. I got $30 a night for a whole 'mansion' but it was ~1hr on train from CBD.

      • +2

How do you spend $100 a day for food and general expenses in japan. I'm only spending $50 normally and $100 if I go fancy restaurant.

        • Easily, especially in Tokyo. If you go to a "fancy" restaurants expect to drop Y20,000 - Y30,000 per person on a meal. I alternated between cheap stuff (ramen and bentos) and higher end stuff (high end sushi) and averages out at least $100 per day per person on food.

        • I think $100 is conservative. You need to consider shopping and transportation as well. Unless you are staying in one place for your entire trip, the cheapest JR pass (7 day) is around $300, which equates to $40 a day.

        • +1

@heyimsu: If you are in Tokyo only the JR pass is a bit of a waste, unless you do big trips to Osaka or Kanazawa etc. Just load up suica card with money and use it anywhere. I was there for 9 days 1 week ago and maybe loaded about $90 on suica, still had like $30 left which I refunded. But yeah food can get expensive depending what/where you go. Each to own I guess.

I can happily eat 128en ikura onigiri's all day long. :)

  • Excuse my ignorance; is this a rare deal? Or does this pop up from time to time? I'm talking about the Cairns>Japan>Cairns. Cheers :)

    • +2

Yes, it seems to pop up from time to time. I'm in Japan at the moment and got the Cairns to Osaka Jet Star deal a few months back. Been dam hot in Japan, 35 degrees everyday and 37 in Osaka today.

  • Thanks OP - hows about Darwin? Any deals from there?

    • Also like to know!

    • Not really - prices start at $824 return. You can access darwin fares by clicking the 'All Japan Flights' and then choosing Darwin, but I have added the direct link in the OP.

  • +1

@IWantThatFlight, can you add a link for families that search for the best deals during school holidays?
Best I can find for the coming up school holidays is $808 return from SYD.

  • Perth —> Tokyo —> Perth 15,834 km $783

    Melbourne —> Tokyo —> Melbourne 16,372 km $486

    Damnit.

    • not fair at all

  • can someone give me the dates for mel to tokyo with the ret tic price of $486?

    • Hi cateyeow,

If you click the Melb->Japan link lots of travel dates are shown.

UPDATE: Sorry, just saw your post underneath.

  • i got $555 for 29 sep

  • A trip to Japan is never cheap, but it's a great experience.

  • Another eye watering 'deal' from Jetstar for Perthians. 766rtn (with fees) for the dates I got 365rtn (incl of fees) with AirAsia. fyi January-February dates

  • I'm travelling to Japan with my partner for a month in early January - February(5-5 ish). We'll be flying out of Perth. Just wondering if I should jump on this deal now, or risk and wait for the possible 2 for 1 deal later on. Also, Tokyo or Osaka? We're spending about 2 weeks in Hakuba snowboarding; but that's not till Jan 24 - Feb 3. We plan to travel around Japan a bit for 2 weeks prior.

    is this over? :*(
