    lolwut?

      Probably meant "flat"

    • +4

      Perhaps fat with a ph?

      • fatph?

    • that's what they tell me :/

  • Pretty good router despite having only 10/100 ethernet. Would be good if they sold other colours like blue, black, orange etc.

    • +12

      especially red. it's faster.

      • Too bad they only have pink :< Good if you're colourblind though ;)

      • +2

I'm gonna stick a Type-R badge on mine to make it go even faster

    • Are you the Anti-jv?

    • That's fine by me. I have a switch that runs my Ethernet and just need a wifi router for my wifi.

  • +2

I don't need one but might buy it anyway as a funky ornament. Will make me look all cool and hipster.

Can I suggest a pet rock instead?

does anyone have any details about the software for this router? is it like my billion where i can block google dns lookups when using devices like roku/chromecasts to get around the netflix geoblock? Roku/Chromecast have a hidden update where they attempt to resolve a domain using manual google dns settings, to see if you are trying to geoblock. you can only block this at the router level.

    • You can put OpenWRT on it but it is a bit sketchy as the 5ghz wifi doesn't yet work. Honestly, I'd get a used Asus AC router (albeit for a lot more) for better custom software support and performance.

    • why would you replace a billion with this?

      • the billion is like 5 years old and dying i can feel it.

  • Would this be better than my current iinet boblite?

    • +3

Bob is a modem plus router combo

      This is only a router.

      • +2

Thanks mate, avoided an embarrassing purchase!

      Stick with the BoB.

Even iiNet's BoB modems/routers, which are notoriously lousy rebagded Belkins, are leagues better than this Xiaomi.

For a comprehensive step up, you'll want shell out ~$170 for a TP-Link Archer D7 (Modem/Router with WiFi AC/No VOIP).

      • Thanks man, I've been wanting a replacement for a while just had no idea where to start when it comes to modems.

        • +1

As per Amar89's recomendations, I have the Archer D9 with my NBN plan, my brother the Archer D7 on ADSL, both are excellent routers and well worth the $150+ price tag.

One thing you may note is that it's not possible to hang the D9 on the wall. This I only found out after buying.

If you're ok with running both a router and a modem, another option is for you to buy just a router and bridge it to Bob, and completely bypass (ignore) Bob's router component. Why would you do that? Mainly because most people want a new modem router for it's router capabilities (e.g AC Dual band) — the design of the modem component hasn't really changed or improved over the years. If your Bob still works fine as a ADSL modem, you only need to upgrade the router component.

The obvious downside is you'll be running two devices and therefore more clutter as a result. The upside is that pure router is cheaper than a modem/router combo.

  • Can you connect a USB hub to this, to connect multiple USB HDDs? I'm assuming not.

  • +1

I heard Xiaomi Router has locked DNS server which can has serious security problem other than random advertisment

  • Besides the slim look does this actually work great? Still using N router at the moment planning to upgrade to an AC router.

    • no better than your n router.

So it can do 500Mbps max LAN speed over 2 x 100Mbps nics…. interesting =D

Is it just me or the design seriously looks similar to the Apple Magic Trackpad?

    • Half their products look "seriously similar" to Apple products. Even their CEO has been called a "Steve Jobs Knock off". Dressing up exactly like Steve with the white text on black background presentations.

      • :P Xiaomi pretty much has no patents (I think they got in trouble in India; got sued by Sony Ericsson, which resulted in them stopping sales in India). While I like their products, I own their battery and bought their bluetooth controller, I frankly see them collapsing from inside (especially with Huawei suing them in China for copyright infringement).

        • I agree. They hit the sweet spot between cheap knock-off with just enough quality to not feel like you're taking a huge gamble, and their battery is probably the best value and highest quality on the market.

They are expanding their product line really rapidly, so it'll be interesting if they over expand, with a large amount of unprofitable products.

        • @Joshman5k: Actually an outcome that might be interesting would be them turning into a peripheral company. While they are doing dodgy possible copy right infringements in that area as well (i.e. http://www.gizmochina.com/2014/12/09/xiaomis-air-purifierbor…), at least it wouldn't be as bad as in smartphone area. Looking at how MS earned more from Android phones (from patent fees) from the mobile industry than from their own mobile phone line, the smartphone market is already fairly messy as is with the patents.

      Look! It's Steve reborn

  • AliExpress is a very bad platform when things go wrong. I bought a car DVR from a seller there, unfortunately I got a DOA one. The seller was willing to refund me US$5 which I paid US$100. Disputed to Aliexpress for 3 weeks now, no response at all.
Don't buy if you could buy from other place.

    • Credit Card Insurance?

    • These Xiaomi products are available from sites that tend to have a better reputation for dealing with product problems like TomTop, Buyincoins & Focalprice etc.
Personally I find all the Xiaomi routers a bit limited (not enough ports), this one is said to be a bit slow if you want to have a lot of throughput as it has a slow CPU.
I like their WiFi cams (although there are similar ones) and their smart home kit (if you can get one at a reasonable price). Their newest AC router with inbuilt 1/6TB NAS is interesting but there don't seem to be any reviews around, nor specific technical info on most of their products.

    • AliExpress isn't quick, but it is safe and reliable. I've spent over US$2500 on 330+ orders (most small, but couple of dozen pretty big ones). Only one order has gone irretrievably wrong (a pair of shoes that cost about $30) and two others had difficult problems that were eventually sorted out. I've found sellers more than willing to resolve problems. Patience, tolerance and good will go a long way on AliExpress. After bad experiences with GearBest and GeekBuying (and having pretty much gotten over DX), the only place I shop other than AliExpress now is eBay.

Does Xiaomi have a combined modem/router like the TP-Link archer series?

  • This router is a terrible one, nice looking but lower performance. owned one and ac only run at 1/2ish speed.

    • What a shame. Been wanting just a cheap AC wifi access point for my network.

  • This deal has expired. It was a one-day sale for 3rd August USA time. It's back up to the usual price now.
