I miss the non-touch Kindles. Far fewer accidental page changes.
I still have mine from 4 years ago still working perfect & I bought the Paperwhite that was on sale about a month or so ago from DSE deal. I prefer the Paperwhite. Yes, the old non-touch Kindle is a solid machine but once you get used to the simplicity, smoothness & overall "modernity" of the newer Paperwhite models then the old machines seem kinda ugly & outdated.
My 3G one non-touch with toggle buttons one died after about 2 years.
It was a sad day.
I've had the touch one a year or two now. It's OK. But I read in bed, usually on my side. I often wake up with the book in a spot no-where near where I stopped reading.
Get the case with the sleep function (depending on what generation your touch Kindle is). I bought the case separately (it was expensive on DSE) and once you close the cover it puts the Kindle to sleep. But then again if you fall asleep while reading it then it won't make difference I guess.
@AussieDaddy: That will not help. If I was aware enough while reading to sleep to close the lid then I'd be aware enough to turn the kindle off or simple move it further away from me.
@tantryl: I feel your pain tantryl, same thing happens to me! I cracked my Kindle 3G Keyboard screen last month after wedging it too tightly into my backpack, then the same week my mother cracked hers after it fell off the bed. I tried using my tablet to read books but the stupid touch screen kept changing pages whenever I shifted weight while lying on my side, and if I fell asleep it often changed pages, opened other books, started playing music etc. It was driving me crazy, there's no way I could deal with that! I tried everything to reduce sensitivity but it's hard to hold something without touching it on one side. If I did get into a good position where it wasn't being bumped, my wife would roll over in bed and bump it for me.
I ended up buying two new LCD panels from eBay for about $25 each and replacing them myself, it's pretty straightforward. Fixed both of them and couldn't be happier!
I hate touch-screen iPods for the same reason. They're impossible to operate in your pocket, in bed under the covers or with your eyes closed. Tactile buttons are so functional, I don't understand why people are so opposed to them these days.
Can anyone review one from personal use, not a big reader so wanting to change that but not spend a heap but get a semi decent experience
I have had a kindle keyboard, kobo touch and kobo mini. I lost the kindle, and the 2nd kobo is in use with a kid. I would happily buy a kindle again, but I got each of the kobo devices for under $50.
The e-ink screen is much better to read on than an ipad/tablet.
The screen refresh is a bit laggy. I understand the new kindles are a bit snappier.
I carried a reader all the time before I had an ipad.
Now I read a small amount on the ipad and leave the reader at home most of the time. When I am on holiday or know I will be reading more I take the reader too, as it is a better reading experience.
$75 is a good price to see it this is good for you, and you could likely resell it for near that if it isn't suitable..
For reference, I read a novel a fortnight when commuting, probably one every two days when I am on holidays to give you an idea of what I consider a little reading and what is a lot.
I remember a 3 week trip to Europe I took about 3kg of books to read. Now I take a 150g reader. They use the same charger as an android phone.
I buy fewer books, and go to the library less often. There are many, many sources of high quality reading matter, even without pirating.
For example, each year the science fiction awards publish all the short stories and novellas in contention for free.
And many authors give away one of their novels, especially multi-volume fantasy epics, for example, to get you hooked.
If you are ok about pirating ebooks, literally every book on the NYT best seller list is readily available, and there are book loaning operations like netflix for books if you want to stay legit.
And, of course, the many classic titles freely available. You can also 'borrow' ebooks through the library.
I have this one and I can say that it works pretty well.
Just try not to brush anything against the screen as it uses infrared touch screen technology and not capacitive touch. This means it's easier to accidentally turn the page, whereas with capacitive touch, it'd only work with your skin.
Factor in the price of a case for about $10-15 shipped from Australia or about $8 from China (eBay prices). The official Kindle case isn't great because it doesn't have a magnet to hold it shut, whereas the eBay cases are more secure.
good old willy smith with the good stuff
I would have pulled the trigger to upgrade by Kindle Keyboard model but no backlight on this one either.
I wouldn't call losing a keyboard an upgrade, but a backlight would be nice. I'd also miss the ability to load books via 3G.
TBH, I never use the keyboard. Nor the 3G now I think about it.
Wasn't the Kindle Keyboard 3G the one with unlimited data?
@deeevan: yeah, but it wasn't very practical to use for anything other than the Amazon store.
You'd only use it if you had no other options and absolutely needed to check something.
@tantryl: I always imagined it was like this: https://xkcd.com/548/
Correct. I've been tempted to task the SIM out and put into my iPad but this 'hack' was talked about years ago, so I doubt it'd even work for anything other than *.amazon.com
I'm waiting on a special on the Voyage.
Ha, sold mine last night for $100, waiting on the new one.
