  • so, whats the catch?
contracts to make up for the ATA cost?
what kinda ATA they give out with their starter pack?

By clicking on the link provided this is the info reagrding "catches"

*Free Mitron MV1 device subject to customer staying on their chosen plan for a minimum of six months. Only available with MegaSaver, MegaSaver Premium, GlobalSaver or GlobalSaver Premium plans. Shipping not included - shipping fee of $10 applies. Customers will need to register their credit card for direct debit & auto-top up payments.

Compare this to the "whirlpoolsaver" plan

      Here https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/Hot-Deals

Where you get same unit for $20 plus $10 shipping and $10 credit with same basic 6 month credit card conditions.

Only difference being the whirlpool plans are better monthly plans so if you stay with MNF you will save more with the Whirlpool saver plans

BTW with both plans to ATA is locked to MNF

      • Hi pete,
Thanks for this analysis. I am reading this as "whirlpoolsaver offer is $10 more expensive, but will be cheaper in the long term". Please correct me if I am wrong.

        • Correct, as the whirlpoolsaver plans have cheaper call rates.
So, you get this offer (and save $20) and one of it's plans for 6 months, then afterwards swap to one of the whirlpoolsaver plans - best of both worlds :)

    • lplau,
      Mitron MV1. Locked to MNF

  • Would agree with you about their quality - also been using them for past 2 years or so

  • They provide great service/call quality (I swapped to them and am saving lots now). This is a great opportunity for people to try VOIP over any internet broadband service. It's plug ang play - Doesn't get any easier. Get two and you can make free MyNetFone calls house to house.

  • So you go in to six month contract for total of $60?
And after the contract expire can you unlock the Mitron ATA?

I'm not impressed with this catch.
IMO surm's idea is much better for people with mid to low usage in long run.

    • Sum it up …

      This offer:
6 mth term, $10 up-front (with $10 worth of calls included), and $10 per mth (with $10 worth of calls included)

      Whirlpool offer:
6 mth term, $30 up-front (with $10 worth of calls included) and $0 per mth and no included calls.

For mid-low usage (eg. someone starting with VOIP) this offer is better than the Whirlpool standing offer because you save $20 up-front and effectively get $10 worth of free calls every month. You won't make back the $20 difference over the 6 months via the Whirlpoolsavers plan with slightly cheaper call rates.

After the 6 mths of this offer, swap to the Whirpoolsaver plans and get the cheaper call rates.

      • mouth,

Is there a min $10 monthly spend with this offer? I can't find that on the advertisement page.

… at the very bottom it has the available plans with this offer.

          https://www.mynetfone.com.au/Residential/Home-Phone/Plans
… gives you the details/pricing of those plans.

          • @auMouth: Thanks Mouth.

            • +1

@surm: There is No minimum spend - all calls are topped back up to the $10 credit every month from the credit card - after 6 months you can remove this if you wish, so only you top it up. Or you can run the credit down to $0

So make no calls you dont run down the credit so it doesnt get topped up.

              Black-Magic

I understand your concern, however this is a cheap way for those without voip to try it. Yes as indicated here there are "better" plans etc. But in this case they give you the hardware at a cheap price so for $10 you can try the service and its a hell of a saving with 10c untimed calls, especially at Christmas.

No one else gives you as low and entry point, and you are in effect only going to pay for the calls you use - after 6 months you can cancel the credit card debiting and use up the credit and move on. So net cost is tying up your $10 for 6 months and thats not considering the savings for any call you make.

Giving you a unit that can be unlocked would defeat the purpose of them giving you the unit as everyone would grab one. Now there are cheaper voip providers but the entry point is higher - you pay for the ATA (voip box), but with this deal you can try voip, then when you find it works well for you, then shop around for someone else.

Thats what I did, although while I found others that were cheaper eg 2c a call saving, there were problems so I decided that 10c untimed to Tassie for 3 hours vs the Telstra cost meant that getting it for 8c and losing reliability was taking the penny pinching too far.

But whatever, using voip has meant I could switch from the standard Telstra service of $30 a month to the budget service of $20 a month so I saved $10 on line rental, I have two lines and dramatically cheaper call costs. BUT I did wait for 12 months before I did this just to be confident that it does work.

Thats what this deal does it gives you a low cost way to discover how to dramatically reduce your call costs

  • I've been with mynetfone for more than 4 years, I have also signed up family members so all the calls we now make are totally free between each other. I also use pennytel, but generally find MNF has the most consistent call quality.

The only issue with this ATA adapter (like all cheap adapters) is that it does not have "PSTN fallback". This means users will need two separate phones, one for regular calls (PSTN) and one for VOIP calls. Spend a little more on an adapter, and the PSTN fallback feature will allow you to make/received both regular/voip calls on a single phone.

That said, this is a good intro deal to VOIP, but yes, makes sure you change to the whirlpool plan.

    • Depends on your preferences - personally I prefer two handsets.

That way, if I get a call on my Telstra phone, I or other family members can use the Voip phone without having to queue.

Also as I am on homeline budget, to make a call using the wrong line, is much harder with two handsets - in fact I lock the Telstra hanset with a password so it has to be a conscious decision to use that handset by any one else. The latter has seen my Telstra bill drop to zero for calls wheeras before there was always $5-$10 on that.
