that would not be very pleasant

  • Is it good enough for kids to play games and watch Youtube kids videos?

Only if they've been very bad this year.

I got one of these for my Grandma the other day for $99. Poor display which must be looked at head on, but performance is good, no issues with Wi-Fi, and is quite lightweight. Build quality is average to poor, and I can't seem to find a suitable case for it. Battery will do around 5-6 hours screen on time, depending on what you're doing. 720p YouTube and games work great, but I've found that 3 pole earphones have to be inserted into the headphone jack half way to get full sound. Regular headphones are fine. Overall, it's excellent value for the money and easily rootable using Kingo Root on a Windows PC - especially useful for running Adaway.

Important note - do the OTA ASAP! It re-partitions the device so the internal memory doesn't fill up. This means that it will do a factory reset.

I think I'll grab a few at this price and give them away as gifts.

Bought one of these last time when they were $44, however I found it had a strange issue, whereby enabling the wifi would kill wifi for the rest of the household.

Anyone else experience this / know a fix (I tried factory reset, software update etc)?

  • FYI, it's been cheaper - $44 as mentiondd at this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/181619 though I do not know whether it was a price error but I got it for $53.95 delivered.

  • 90 percent fail rate according to my mate working there

    • You sure about that? If they failed that much they would just pull them from the shelves…

If they are anything like the Thomson cheapo tablets from Target I would avoid. Our 3 kids had Thomson tablets given to them for Christmas 2013. Within one year they had all been replaced 3 times. When they have all failed a fourth time we gave up replacing them. Not worth the time or hassle!

Not Dick. They were pumping out incorrectly described (wrong version of Android) $31 DgTec 7" Android last year. So many failed, as reported on OzBargain.

I complained about os description via PayPal, got a refund on my working tablet the next day. DS didn't even want it back! It really was crap. I've never taken it out of the box since.

Incorrect advertising continued for months & so did returns according to staff.

        • Yeah pretty much what he said they're selling these hoping that a lotta people won't bother returning them as they know they're junk.

You'd think they'd pull them from sale, but hey its a company that sells extended warranties, so enough said.

        • @acex1138:
Bought my only extended warranty ($35) on a ($199) DS PVR in 2006. (Friend tipped me off they accepted almost any claim & paid out.) At end of warranty, put in claim based on list of real minor faults. Got $199 cheque.

Am watching same PVR tonight (it works fine as a back-up unit, just occasionally stuffs up if watching while recording 2 networks at same time). Not bad for a $35 SDef DS PVR :-)
They sold better quality back then.

  • I was reluctant but gave my then 3.5 and 5.5 year old galaxy tab 3 instead of a cheapie. I have had to replace the charge port on one but I don't regret it. Giving a kid a tablet that will frustrate them and put them off tablet and computer use for life is no bargain and not a good idea. They're doing very well with these and use them regularly a year on.
