  • I would steer well clear of anything with a 'Gateway' logo. I'm not sure why Acer is trying to resurrect this most horrible of brands.

    • I would steer well clear of anything with a ‘Gateway’ logo

      Why?

      • The company is no longer in business ie as per xuqi acer now handles them and if you have had any of the experiences i have had with acer then you will avoid this notebook.

Acer doesnt exactly make it better

        • I'm aware that Acer bought them out quite some time ago, but I was more meaning — what's your experience with them? Why are they so horrible that everyone should stray away?

          • @pais: I suspect there's nothing more wrong with Gateway (Acer), Acer, MSI, Compaq (HP), (consumer) HP, (low-end) ASUS, etc…
Warranty period reflects manufacturer's statistical confidence in (and to consumer, the quality of) the product.
Brand is nothing, quality is everything.

  • any comments on the specs anyone?

  • Should really have Wireless N

  • +1

This is pretty good value especially considering the cashback offer, 4GB ram, dvd writer, core2duo, bluetooth, discrete graphics, big hard drive…

To those who are put off by the Gateway logo just think of it as an Acer, all the different components are sourced from a whole range of suppliers and will be shared by other manufacturers too, it's not like Gateway is some sort of computer cancer that these have come down with!

    • There's no profit for a brand to compete with its own sub-brand.
Usually, a sub-brand is created to avoid cross-contamination - bad publicity from sub-brand won't affect other sub-brands or parent brand. (Another reason is that the sub-brand was bought-in and has some loyalty, but not in this case - the real US-based Gateway company went bust a long time ago.) (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1029855/asus-distan…)
In this case, Gateway is the lower-end sub-brand of Acer.

  • I originally bought a Gateway system in 2001 and was disappointed with how they suddenly without warning pulled up stumps and slipped away into the night. Gateway abandoned its Australian customers and many other international customers to focus on its American market. Had I known they were planning this, no way I would have bought a Gateway system. Needless to say that when things went wrong with the system which it did, its servicing was atrocious, hours spent on hold to overseas support centres. Gateway then sold its professional business segment to MPC Corporation who subsequently filed for bankruptcy protection leaving Gateway business customers stranded without access to support or warranty services. Gateway is not a good, trusted brand name here and in many other countries, and it is dumb of Acer to think it is a brand worthy of salvaging. When purchasing a laptop, I always considered Acer as a producer of laptops for the budget conscious, so why would they bring out a a new range of cheaper laptops under a known brand? Is it to peddle cheaper laptops that are most likely assembled in China? To re-establish this brand is the equivalent of Hyundai bringing back the Daewoo brand to peddle cheaper Chinese made cars.

    • Thanks for sharing your story. I would contend that now that the brand is Acer-owned, you should not have a repeat of the same process. Exactly what went wrong with the laptop? Could someone relatively tech-savvy fix it themselves? I was genuinely considering buying (not this deal) the other Gateway deal.

It's also noteworthy that so, so many of the products you consume/use on a day to day basis are made in China. I'm not sure if you were implying this, but "Made in China" is not necessarily synonymous with "heap of crap". Flip your keyboard over.. Look on the back of your TV.. Look at your PS3. I'm not contending that Gateway is great (the fact of the matter is, you have slightly more clue than I do in that regards), just playing the devil's advocate here.. Maybe I inferred something incorrectly from your post though.

  • I was exagerating to make a point. I understand Acer wants to take market share from Lenevo (As you rightly point out, most laptops are their parts are made in China) and to compete against the big 2 (Dell and HP). But I would have thought that Gateway does not have a good brand. Acer have acquired Gateway and Packard Bell as part of a strategy to increase market share, but I would think their brand name is more attractive than Gateway's. Unless the acquisition has left them with warehouses of laptops which they must shift.
