    Better check jv's Ancestors.

I always wonder the use of these sites if you don't have an European background.

    • +2

      Sucks to be Muhammad Lee.

    • Then I guess they would be of no use to you. Are you suggesting it is unfair they exist because they can't track non-Europeans too? I'm not even sure how well other parts of the world track linage.

      • Actually I'm not even sure about the comprehensiveness of it outside of British descendants.

Just an FYI, any data you put on that site is made public, they also try and trap you into expensive contracts (They charge you $300 in one shot after your "free" trial for the first year, then $450 for the second…).

Births Deaths and Marriages database in Australia is free to access too.

You do realise that you can cancel before they charge you the $300 dont you ? also you can make your tree private so no one see it and the BDM database only gives you minimal information.

      • Yeah I have no problems with them using porn site tactics either, also the advertising says things like "$25 per month" when you cannot pay per month, they charge you the year upfront.

        • But you don't have to pay anything,it's free access… lol

        • +2

You can pay per month. Look in the account settings.

        • Yes you can, i pay $25 per month. My family is doing some ancestry research, and we share this account across about a dozen people.

          https://familysearch.org

Can give you a lot of free information.

I had a yearly account with ancestry but it ran out.
I had pretty much gone back with me and my wife quite far and with numerous paternal/maternal lines.
Now I just use the above site and save any searches that i can't find for the library or free access ancestry weekends.
A tip for using ancestry is to save all records as a file on your computer because when the sub runs out you can't view again that record..

You can also access it at most public libraries for free.

Just do as much as you can over the free period and then wait for the next free records offer. After all your family history won't change much!

A tip is to download images of stuff you can only access during the free period and then save it to the relevant people as an image, which you should still have access to anytime.

Also I think you can sync to Family Tree Maker and this keeps a record offline.

    e.g. http://www.estore.com.au/family-tree-maker-2014-deluxe-austr…

I bought a copy of this several years ago on a Groupon deal, as it includes 3 months access to Ancestry and just update stuff each time there is a free offer.

    • This program is awesome,I have been using it for many years and it's the best one out there.

    • If you reinstall it on a new computer it offers the free trial again.
      I did this for a 6 month trial 3 times….

Free all of the time at your local library.

  • Can i find the queen's birth record on there? Or did Australian really just need an excuse for a long weekend?

    • Current QEII was born 21 April. I think the holiday was originally to commemorate KGIII's birthday.

  • +2

Queens Birthday and long weekend are not the same for all of Australia

Better to say 6th June to 9th June.

    • Tell that to WA.

  • Ugh. I borrowed another family's tree because it was linked to mine. Just found records proving one of the links they've made is completely wrong. Just goes to show you have to do it all yourself!

    • +2

      Yes you do.
I have had a similar thing happen to me where someone laid claim to my great grandfather as his own, simply because he seemed to match.
No skin off my nose but he was clearly barking up the wrong tree.

It is very easy to take shortcuts and get wrong information from people and sources.
I had an ancestor that looked like Joe, so I assumed Joseph and followed him back.
It was only after doing more intensive research that i realised it was Job not Joe.
Also, whenever I added new stuff on to my tree about half a dozen other trees would also update on other peoples family trees.
What was bad was they quite often put an incorrect country next to the city…..

  • Always been a shame that these sites don't particularly cater for us wogs
