  • Been waiting for these to come into stock at Bhphotovideo. Great value highly-portable machine for most (non-gaming) purposes.

    …not that I need one.

  • $699 US

    • +4

Yes, add $65 shipping, convert it to AUD, and it comes out at $977 AUD delivered.

  • 1-Year Accidental Damage Protection (Electrical Surges, Fire Damage, Drops, and Liquid Spills)
1-Year Limited Warranty with 24-Hour Phone Tech & Online Chat Support

    hmmm

  • im really tempted but it seems the CPU is really underpower…not like I do alot of programming. This is like ultrabook for netbook purpose? Just general browsing and doc?

    • That's what ultrabooks are for… This is supposed to have 10-13hrs battery life.

It's slow Dual Core 800Mhz seems poor but it seems to rank a lot better overall than my old Intel Core2 Duo T9400 @ 2.53GHz. However I think in raw processing power my old one is better. At least with the ultrabook it can Turbo Boost to 2Ghz. https://cpubenchmark.net/laptop.html

Don't expect games to run especially at that resolution. Something like SC2 will run but you have to use a lower res - http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-5300.125576.0… (scroll down to FPS, you want at least 30fps for games to run smoothly)

    • +1

it's the speed of the U cpus of the last generation (i5-4xxxU) but fanless due to lower power consumption. General browsing and doc would be an Atom processor, this is pushing past that lets you run any app you want, but isn't suited to encoding/gaming.

I guess it comes down to what you need. This is faster than my laptop at work that's a Core i5 but hitting the end of its 3 year life cycle. So it won't really struggle with much. At the same time it's thin and has a great battery life, which my current laptop doesn't have. So it can do everything I currently do, it's more an upgrade for my shoulder.

    • Compared the processor on this machine with a 5th gen Intel Core i5 5200U.

The differences are minimal. No winner declared. Too close to call.

Plus the ultra low power consumption of this processor will give prolonged battery life.

I will wait till oz dollar is equal to US and then buy one.No hurry lol.

Glad you're not in a hurry in that case

      HGAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!

Have you seen the forecasts? The government and the RBA want the AUD below 70 cents.

      • Yeah the rich get richer

    • Fair bit more expensive

    • It's 2nd hand? As per description "This is open box item from Bestbuy customer return, LIKE NEW condition under warranty to 10/2015. Minimal scratches"

THe first non-macbook I've liked on this site. Well done!

  • Tempted, thanks OP. Given the power supply is for the states, what would I need to make it work here? Can someone recommend what I would need for example from an ebay link?

  • Back to work tommorow ; sunday already wth

  • I've been looking for this deal for a while now, almost bit the bullet on the UX303 a couple of months ago for a similar price - thanks OP!

  • Looks like a good unit. Making me consider replacing my old HP Core 2 Duo…

Does this come with an International warranty?

  • The camparison on CPU Boss is BS
I have used both processors M performs well till you want to multitask, load a autocad file or load up a VM the cpu hits it thermal limit and starts to active cool (basicly slows down).

    • that is what i thought, i see all the reviews, other than battery life, M is actually worse than 5xxxU in all performance. That is quite stupid…

    • @sonicentropy: Its not meant for running design software like AutoCAD or Maya or doing video/audio editing. You may need the latest core i5 or i7, 16GB RAM and a dedicated graphics card for doing that kind of work. An an ultrabook with that kind of configuration will cost almost double the price of this machine.

      • Not true my dell xps 12” i7 ultrabook cost me $1200 model run out its nearly 2 years old model and craps hard on the core M i have at work (apart from boot time and battery life) the core M is a low wattage cpu. Its the eazybake oven of cpus. I am a power user not everyone is and 70% of people will love what they can do. But intel should market this at what it truly is, a glorified Atom not a viable desktop replacement

        • +1

XPS 13 on dell website is $1899

Any XPS with 256 SSD and 8GB RAM (and a processor better or equal to core M) won't be $1200 anytime soon let alone $977.

        • +2

Actually, I just purchased a Dell refurb 13" XPS with i5-5200U, QHD+ touch display (3200 x 1800), 8gb ram and 256gb SSD for $1175 delivered off ebay. Includes GST and delivered in 5 days.

Comes in Dell box and looks brand new. The infinity display is amazing.

The standard version with FHD, 4gb ram and 128gb SSD can be had for as low as $920 delivered

        • @seijai:

It seems this is refurbished from USA. Does warranty works here too? I been trying to get some from outlet…T.T

        • Not too sure tbh. Says 1 year Dell warranty but not sure if that is international

        • @seijai: No GST on a product from a US seller. Also buyers could potentially get hit by customs as it is over $1000

        • @ory_zm:

actually if you look closely they already told you there is import tax

        • @jasecs:

Yes. Correct. No gst but I paid import tax. Was a bit cheaper 2 weeks ago. Was $1175 delivered with import tax.

        • @seijai:

If that was the price I won't even think about it… I will just get it. I missed a few i5 5thgen xps 13 from outlet at about 1.2k

        • @jasecs: Wow! never saw that before… that's awesome!

        • Re: Warranty

Looks like it is transferrable, use http://www.dell.com/support/assets-transfer/us/en/04#/Identi…
According to one eBay listing it comes with "Dell’s In Home Repair Warranty" which I believe is equivalent to the 1 year Standard warranty.

  • I have the predecessor. Excellent ultrabook. Might want to uninstall Windows 8 and install 7.

  • Online ordering is currently shut down due to Shavuos. Will be back in 35 hours…damn

  • Thanks, got one for my father in law.

  • Did anyone get hit with GST going through customs?

    • Ours went through fine. Did you add anything else to the laptop?

      • Thanks :)
I haven't actually put the order through yet. I wasn't sure if they included the delivery costs!

        • Generally they do although it should still come (just) under $1000.

For my experience with b&h last year for the Sony Vaio Pro 13
(https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150496), I did not pay any import tax nor GST, and I merely get charge by my credit card for conversation fee.
So if you have something like 28 degree or bankwest which they do not charge conversion fee for online purchase, you can save like ~$40 dollar.

I personally do not know about import tax and was shocked by another member above saying they got charge with import tax.

In regards to GST, my understanding is it only against the value of the good but not the total of the purchase, as it is also being discussed within the quoted link above.
And at least I did not get charge when my total is over $1000 AUD last year.
