  • I'm currently with PIA and my yearly subscription runs out in December. If I purchase this now, does it activate immediately? Or can I wait until I'm ready to start using the service and the 12 months begins then?

    Thanks

The deal is regularly posted, and never got more than 10 votes.

Other companies get vote of 60-110+ votes. Plenty of time to look around.

      • Thanks for the links.

TorGuard and PIA appeal to me in particular due to the number of devices connected simultaneously.

I'm not hugely impressed with PIA, my connection drops out occasionally or just stops receiving data on my mobile devices.

Have a look at nordvpn, mate

        • @liquid metal:

Nordvpn is good but their price is quite expensive to PIA.

        • +3

          @DrStinge:

I wouldn't call $36 expensive (1 year) for up to 6 connections. The services they provide are quite good as well (double VPN server, dedicated IP servers, server dedicated for TV streaming, DNS servers, servers for Tor,…). Very satisfied with the speed as well.

        • @liquid metal: Thanks mate, will do!

hmm, I don't know. The customer started to get rude - accusing the rep of trolling and also using strong language, even after the rep apologised for the poor VPN performance that the customer was experiencing. Sure they hadn't simply given him wanted he wanted (a refund), but he should have continued to work with them in my opinion. They at no point ignored him, and it sounded like another rep took over and was keen to help him out. I actually think that the customer looks like the bigger tool.
Note: I am not in any way affiliated with this company, and have never used their services. Simply reading that transcript as a neutral observer.

      • +2

I am more surprised by the fact that these guys could tell the customer had download 10GB of data. I thought they kept NO logs?

        • +8

What, so a company counting the amount of data a customer is using is considered "data logging" to you? I think that is taking the definition to the extreme. If a company doesn't know the amount of data being used then how on earth are they to plan for capacity, and it will also make diagnosis difficult. I also can't see how data counting reduces anonymity.

        • -1

Total data vs data per person. They don't need to know how much each individual is using.

    • -1

and just like that they will never get me as a customer.

      Thats truely disgusting customer service.

      PIA it is then.

    • +1

This person did receive a FULL refund and our customer support team worked extensively in an effort to resolve their issue.

  • How does it compare to PIA

    • I haven't used PIA, but I am on Torguard at the moment. I have to admit the speeds I achieve seem low, compared to my non-VPN connection. My 'normal' internet speed maxes out at about 7 Mbits full download speed, but when I switch on the VPN I tend to max out at between 750 kbits and 1.5 Mbits (depending on which country I have selected). To me this is not 'unlimited bandwidth speeds' as they advertise.

I'd be interested to know whether others on Torguard are also experiencing similar download speed differences when switching on their VPN. Perhaps I have some settings issues??

Otherwise, I am happy with Torguard and only tend to use it when I really need to. There's a decent list of countries you can connect through and my connection has only ever dropped a small handful of times.

Edit: I just read Obione's link. Seems like I'm not the only one with speed issues on Torguard!

Torguard were the worst performing on the Choice VPN roundup: https://www.choice.com.au/electronics-and-technology/interne…

        • +1

PIA came in better on that site

      • For fastest speeds, connect to a server closest to you. When connecting from AU the fastest locations will be AU - Melbourne/Sydney, USA - LA, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Romania, and New Zealand… (Just to name a few)

If you are on a DSL connection and encountering slow speeds with our OpenVPN software, please try using Viscosity and connect through L2TP. This should improve your speed dramatically.

        • Yeah… Romania is a long way away from Aus… However, it is the "fastest" server I have found for torrents. But it still cuts my download speed in half or worse - 2MB/s goes to 1MB/s on a good day. Viscocity didn't seem to do much, but I am not sure how to set it as L2TP or if that is the default (this is my first VPN)

I'm going to try using the utorrent proxy settings instead. This will work even though I bought the VPN not the proxy right?

Stupid and misleading name for a VPN that has nothing to do with Tor.

    • +2

Clever and misleading name if it gets them extra sales :P

    • The reference to "tor" in TorGuard relates to "torrents" and guarding one’s privacy when using BitTorrent. We are not related in any way to the “tor” project however the company does support through donations.

      • +1

        Should call it TorrentGuard then.

  • I had been with Torguard for about 8 months. Saw this deal this morning and wanted to add another year to my subscription at the promo price.

Contacted them, and they said it was fine. I got the $29.99 USD py FOR LIFE on my existing account. Renewed until Aug 2016!

I have been very happy with them. It obviously depends on the server, especially from Aus, US/Canada/Netherlands seem to be best. Whilst HK can be good, especially during night time in China. Sydney server almost matches my TPG speed - although I don't use it as I'm paranoid.

Viscosity is cracking and the free proxy is useful for the extra layer.

TG also offer their own DNS servers in France … Which means I can avoid DNS Leaks going to TPG.

In terms on the 'No Logs' thing, you just have to trust that they do what they say, as with any VPN.

There are some negatives, support tickets have generally been well dealt with but occasionally they are a little abrupt and the Android app is a little unreliable at times. TGLite on OSX is 'ok'.. I prefer Viscosity. But have seen huge improvements in TGLite in the last few months.

Despite that, still think that price+features is great. Very pleased, especially with the service this morning!

    • so it's just a coincidence that you made a new account to comment on this one deal?

      • Pessimism gets you nowhere in life.

Yes, I felt the need to create an account to post. TG have been getting some stick and I thought it's only fair to give a balanced view. See attached, and then apologise.

I have been with TorGuard since the november sale last year and just added another year. Speeds have always been fast on Sydney servers and I switch over to los angeles for torrents. Haven't really tried any others..

Only filed a support ticket once for a minor billing issue and they answered quickly and seemed professional.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • +2

Wow..After reading all the comments.. I am back to the same point of confusion where I started :P

  • I signed up last time and on some of the servers I get very slow connection however when I change it comes back to something normal maybe 20% slower than non VPN/Proxy.

  • Does not seem to work on existing accounts, I went upgrade to yearly and said it did not effect anything in my cart.
