I was foraging around for the cheapest price for one of these windows 8.1 stocks to watch Foxtel Go on, I saw the GearBest pre-order for the 'new' version for US$99 and still wasn't fussed so I managed to find out that there's a 15% off seller promotion, (16% off if you use the MOBILE APP - you can scan the QR code directly, its about a $1).
There's also US $5 off coupon you can redeem at the moment just by clicking the Store Promotion: box.

Sure it might be cheap and nasty and overheat, but it's cheap and useful.
Haven't seen one of these able to be bought cheaper.

    hahahah store name

    • Hmmm watch where you're sticking that stick! :D

    • is it really a computer stick?

  • but seriously a link to the store would help

    • added, thanks

Is this the lock stock and two smoking barrels scam in practice?

What was it, arse ticklers fan club?

    • "Bobby's Bits"

  • This actually looks pretty interesting, but the description is awfully vague. It says it "runs Windows 8.1" but doesn't specifically say it includes it. May just be a bad translation.

It also doesn't say how it's powered — I assume the microUSB port you can see in one of the pictures. I don't believe proper power-over-HDMI is a widespread thing as of yet.

With that said, I have a tablet with this processor, and it runs Win8.1 really well on the 1280x800 screen (even some minor gaming). Not sure how decent the performance will be on full HD, but it should be powerful enough to at least stream video. These newer quad-core Atoms aren't the shit Atoms that used to be in netbooks. These are actually fairly impressive for tablets and systems-on-a-stick like this.

    • Agreed. However Ali express is pretty safe in my experience and this seller has a large number of transactions to his name.

    • in a different listing for the same product it says "We send with Window 8.1 OS Trail (trial) version, if need full activity, need buy activity key in Microsoft website."

      • Yeah, I'd be weary of this one as the "trial" is typically a non-activated version and you'll be stuck paying $100 for a legitimate licence.

At this price, I'm guessing its the variant that doesn't have the Windows Licence.

the jpg pic there says win8.1 w. bing paid version ('verison')

also refund without sending the item back

still, i dunno, way sus, no spec sheet

i suppose buy it and if you dont get windows be prepared to use it under openelec etc.

        • @tonyjzx: No OpenELEC on these at this stage AFAIK due to them all having a 32-bit UEFI BIOS rather than 64-bit.

  • some questions about whether this actually has legit windows?

and its only 1.33 base, 1.8ghz burst and the web reviews seem to indicate it only runs on 2amp so therefore not as fast?

I've asked a query after purchasing regarding windows. It says it's the bing version.

      • +1

Nice that u take the time to ask, but it look like they have sideline the answer. That is if windows with bing has been paid for or if it the trial version where u will then need to pay for it yourself if u want to used it legally longer then the trial period

        • Just google the Meegopad T02, it says "provide a fully licensed version of Windows 8.1 as standard."

        • +1

As an FYI, the "bing" version is free..

        • @ryang:
I queried the seller. It contains an activated version of windows installed.

        • @ryang:
Windows with Bing is not free for device without screen and the screen also need to be less than a certain size.

Meegopad T01 came with a trial Windows with Bing. T02 is supposed to come with activated Windows, and is more expensive

Costs a bit more but is fully activated…

I want one, it just NEEDS to have 8.1 activated

    • If you read the comments further down, it's a further $25 to have the activated version:-(

  • i dont think it has legit windows hence the cheap price, you could probabvly buy it and install own OS however it means, most reviews online state its trial ver

I bought the pipo x7 which has the same processor. Can't even watch a 720p youtube video in chrome or firefox without stuttering and dropped frames. Internet explorer works however. Although it is a quad-core atom, most applications really need good single threaded performance to not stutter, and atom isn't there yet.

I wish they offered something like this but with core m.

    • I'm guessing the chip is overheating as the chip is definitely capable. PiPO didn't use the metal case as a heatsink so temps climb pretty rapidly under load. When I tested it out, playing Asphalt 8 caused it to throttle fast. There are some cooling mods on FreakTab that have been successful at lowering the temps.

      • I have ordered some adhesive ram cooling fin thingys off dealextreme to see if it can improve performance, i'll get them in a month probably. My pipo eventually locks speed down to 0.05ghz and cant even open the start menu. I assume that is it throttling due to heat.

But the chrome/youtube issue happens immediately when booted up before it has time to get really hot. HTML5 youtube in chrome and firefox is just really not very optimised.

        • I'd also have a look at a thermal pad. I believe most put them between the motherboard and the bottom of the case.

I've also had YouTube lock up on older PCs due to the HTML 5 switch.

  • i end-up not buying this instead buying something else on the store. check it out

  • I think OP was looking at something else other than the meegopad ;)

Seller has confirmed it contains windows and it is activated already.

  • Good luck with trying to cool this damn thing. It overheats and slows down like everything in the previous generation. Apparently the version 2 design that is "just out" has active cooling on it to pass out the heat (but is selling for over $100 USD). Otherwise, you will not be able to touch it at idle, let alone under load.

    • I have the T01, watch Netflix for many hours and the stick is not hot at all. I also use it to make Windows wim images and the process with take almost a day from capturing, flashing, updating, still not feeling any hot.

I will try some burn in software and check the core temperature just to be sure.

      • Interesting.. there's been a number of reports of it overheating including people on Whirlpool:
        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2328057

Apparently it will degrade the performance substantially when this happens and people will have to resort to mini fans blowing onto it through the day. I am doing this on my Voyo Mini PC with same specs (but a larger box) as this.
