Replacement Car Key for a 2007 Peugeot 307

Hi all,

TL;DR
Lost my car key, need a cheap replacement, have a spare that does not have an immobiliser.

Lost my car keys a few weeks ago. I reported it to the police but nothing has turned up (although I'm not sure if it is even worthwhile reporting lost keys, as apparently lost and found things are just put into a box at the front of the local station - which I did ring and nothing turned up). I've decided it's time to bite the bullet and replace the key. I've rang a few places and been given the following quotes (I'm in Perth BTW):

  • $465 at the Melville Peugeot Dealership
  • $460 at the Osborne Park Peugeot Dealership
  • $750 from one mobile locksmith
  • $600 from a second mobile locksmith for a key that doesn't have remote unlock or $900 for a key that does.

So the dealerships are the cheapest option at the moment, but I'd need a tow there, I'm SOR so I got a quote to the Melville dealership at either $145 from company A and $185 from company B.

I've looked through the forums here, and online, but there seems to be very little useful information on what needs to be done, especially with regards to immobilisers (or maybe I'm just stupid and it's clear as day haha).

I have a spare key that can open the doors but does not have a built in immobiliser. Is there something I can do with this key? Can it be programmed to my car without having my car towed (like programmed remotely)?

I haven't taken the 'spare' key anywhere to see if something can be done, and a few places I've rung have said that they'd need to look at it to see if anything can be done.

Common responses I've seen on here and other forums are:

  • Buy a replacement key on ebay and have it cut at the locksmith - I'd do this but I assume that it won't resolve my immobiliser problem?
  • Use said key to reprogram the locks - this I'm unsure of, as it normally seems to be referring to reprogramming the central locking rather than the immobiliser, but again, if this is a viable option I'd be keen to give it a go.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!

Try solving the issue in separate transactions:

    1. Buy the key with immobilizer on ebay
    2. Cut it somewhere locksmith/bunnings
    3. Tow your car to the dealer and ask them to program the key (usually 15mins of work).
3.1 Or try to find mobile locksmith who can program the key

PSA's are not the most popular cars in AU, so there is a price multiplier applied to everything:)

BTW is your 307 with auto transmission? How many times AL4 had to be repaired already?:)

Do you have RACV ? have them tow the car. But yeah basically they need to program the key to the car. They need access to the cars OBD2 port to do it. The dealer will wipe the old key transponder codes and program in new ones. In the event someone finds your keys, its a safer option. Mobile locksmith will do the same. They really have no choice.

I would go with the dealership. You'll get an OEM key instead of a generic key cut(OEM better quality). I wouldn't buy keys off ebay unless you know what transponder chip is in the keys.

Edit: Are you sure the spare key you have doesnt start the car ? Have you tried ?

  • Hi all,
Just thought I'd close the loop on this one. Got a mobile auto locksmith to come out yesterday. He said my spare key had a transponder in it (it just wasn't programmed to the car). So he wiped the ignition and the key and reprogrammed it for both. It was $440 for that. I'll probably pick up a key on ebay like andyvolk suggested and get it cut and programmed based on my now working key.

Most mobile auto locksmiths weren't responsive, so I'll give a shout out to West Coast Lock Services for doing it at the lowest quoted cost. Still more than I wanted to pay though haha.

Also, it wasn't clear to me when I set out, but the locksmith needs to access the car in the case of a lost key, as they need to wipe the old immobiliser code and reprogram the key to it. I spent a whole day stuffing around because I didn't realise this.

If you are keeping the car, you should look at a clone Lexia Cable from somewhere like AliExpress. It is the same as the dealer uses, and believe it will allow you to program new keys.
