Subaru Impreza RV 2002 Replacement Key

The key for my Subaru Impreza RV 2002 has worn out. Key and remote lock still works. Just the key case is falling apart. I called my local Subaru dealer and they want $520 for a replacement key, cut coded and wireless lock.

Original key looks like this.

Been to a few local locksmiths and they want around
$130. Key only no wireless lock.
$130. Key cut and coded + wireless lock.
$180. Key cut and electronics trasnsfered.

Last place was one of the Mr Minit store for $89,99. Replacement key case, cut and electronics transferred Problem is its been 5 weeks since I placed the order and they still haven't got the blank in. So looking for alternative places to get a replacement key done for a reasonable price in Sydney area. Either key shell/case or flip case.

Since found AutoKeyMaster but not sure how good they are. Sent them the key details. Got a reply. Unfortunately they can only do a flip remote key and they want $195 to program and cut one.

i remember someone posting about this on the "wrx and sti owners australia" fb page.

if not, you have forums you might be able to look at if you dont get an answer here.

    • They've been down for maintenance for quite a whil, do you know what the go is?

  • Have you tried looking for a key case on eBay? Both sets of my dad's previous car keys fell apart and he got some online, got a store to cut them for him, and got the electronics transferred over. It did take him some time to find a shop that would cut the key for him without charging a ridiculous price though.
Here's one I found just then that looks a bit like your current key: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SUBARU-Key-Shell-2-Button-IMPREZA…

    • This key is for the other Subaru models but I guess it still can be used. They updated the key shell in 2003 I think.

      • That blank is very common but unfortunately is for the newer Subaru key style. You can tell as the remote buttons are two different sizes and the shape although similar is smaller. On my key the remote buttons are smaller and both the same size.

Correct. The blank for mine is the older style and impossible to find without either having to resort to getting a complete new key or flip key with wireless lock cut and coded. Or buy an expensive genuine original one from Subaru.

Mr Minit was the only store I found that could get the blank (actually listed in there catalog). Transfer and cut a new car key for a reasonable price.

Just called Mr Minit again today and they managed to find the blank key I ordered in. So will head down there in the next few days and get them to make up the replacement key. Never used them before but hopefully they will be ok.

I got the key done today. The blanks matches the new style one pictured above and found on eBay. Just that the ones on ebay doesn't show any of them coming with remote buttons. Just empty holes which I assumed meant you had to transfer the circuit board and buttons over from the old key and cut the new key.

Thats why I assumed it wouldn't fit since the black buttons didn't match. The one I got already had buttons in place so the circuit board from the old style fited perfectly to line up with the buttons on the replacement newer style key.
