Mazda 3 replacement key cost?

Hello
I have lost my spare set of keys for my Mazda 3 and need to get an replacement.
How much do they cost?
I have read:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2025012
which gave me a bit of information.

My car model is Mazda 3 BL10F1, date of manufacture 1/03/2009

From my understanding, doing it not through the official dealer way. I would have to:
1) Buy a key
www.ebay.com.au/itm/MAZDA-Transponder-Chip-Flip-Key-2-Button…
which has the transponder chip insider it.

2) Take the key and my old key to a locksmith to cut the key( $100-$150) and then get it responded to my car( $?)

Thanks

  • I would just call a dealer first to get $? (prepare for shock) then go and speak to the key cutter at the local shopping centre…
Some keys can be programmed in the car by going through a set procedure but that is not with all.
    Have a read here too…

  • I can't speak for a mazda, but I had a Lexus a few years ago and needed a new transponder key before, and I had big problems getting one from a locksmith - be assured me it would work, it didn't, I ended up after much hassle getting a refund and buying a much more expensive one from Lexus, but at least it worked! I have heard similar stories from nissan and toyota owners so based on my experiences and heresy, I would advise forking out the extra, doing it properly and going to mazda and getting them to take care of it

  • Keys aren't actually a necessity for vehicles, yet an industry was born by manufacturers which falsely exagerates the value of these systems and downplays the negs.

    Solution for my cars -
1/. I take the little black chip out of the key head, find a spot against the ignition barrel that works consistently to pickup the indused code output. Permanently attach the chip here. Eg. Tape & silicon.
2/. Get 2 or 3 simple keys cut at Mr Minut etc for $7.50 to $10 each.
3/.Put the original key with remote (take battery out) somewhere safe like in filing cabinet under c or k.

As long as you manually lock the car with the key, you wont need the remote again.
Voila stupid exploitive system disabled permanently for all future owners in less than an hour.
